Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 05:04 am:

Remnants of Winter Carnival were melting away eight years ago. Jonathan was still attending Michigan Tech, commuting from our Eagle River home. The daily drive through the Keweenaw Peninsula gave him plenty of opportunity to catch the sights.

When we first got the idea for a "picture of the day" on Pasty Central - (during Winter Carnival of '97-'98) - our guiding principle became this: If we were not able to live here, what would we want to see every day? Landscapes, structures, people, wildlife, signs, the Lake... there are so many fascinating images which remind us of home in the U.P. If you're new to Pasty Central, you can catch up on all of these pictures in the Archives

Good morning! It's still cold, but no more snow anyway? How much did you guys get UP there?

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 07:36 am:

Good Morning one time for the 4th.time.We have snow here in Knoxville thank you very much, but you could keep it UP der be ok with me here.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 07:46 am:

Good Morning, Everyone! We have a little bit of snow on the ground here in mid-Michigan, with more coming this morning a little bit later, I think. And, it is very cold for this time of the year. Our local meteorologist last night said that we are 20 degrees below normal, and will be for almost a week. Burr!

I don't think many people will wear Easter bonnets this year here! It will be winter hats, scarves, and gloves. Doesn't Mother Nature know that April Fool's Day was 6 days ago? :-)

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 07:57 am:

Morning from Tampa Florida. We have a drop in tempature also.... But, no snow lol. It was 46º last night. Brrrrrr But I will have on my white shoes and Easter Bonnet tomorrow for Mass. I am sure I would trade them both in for a snowy walk to a church with Jacobsville Sandstone, in snow boots. I Miss the U.P. terribly, and my only respite is coming daily to the Pasty Cam.

well, i was told its APRIL, and the folks around here are wearing sandals and winter coats. Its pretty funny..22° with snow in the air and on the ground

By FJL (Langoman) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 09:43 am:

Hey Thumbgardner, thanks for the link about "Global Warming" in your post yesterday. Its a real eye-opener. Somthing the "Oscar Winner" should read..........

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 09:48 am:

Japei,
Thank you for sharing the Easter tradition in Finland with us. I print all your traditions and put them into my family tree book. Someday, when I am all finished, (haha) I will get all the pages put into a bound book for my family.

I think we are going to have to change our seasons around in Michigan. We had a longer FALL-basically until late December, delayed WINTER-Still snowing in April, with a splash of SPRING in March. What will SUMMER bring us??? and most importantly when?
Kathie

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 10:01 am:

Here is a story about "warming" that non-Yoopers may not have
seen and will be interested in. This was in yesterday's Esky Daily
Press. "Lake Superior has been warming even faster than the
climate around it since the late 1970s due to reduced ice cover,
according to a study by professors at the Uni. of Minnesota
Duluth. Summer surface temperatures on the famously cold
lake have increased about 4.5 degrees since 1979... The lake's
'summer season' is now beginning about two weeks earlier than
it did 27 years ago."

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 10:02 am:

I'm off to babysit for my 2 month old granddaughter while her mom takes the five year old to the local Easter egg hunt. They'll be wearing all their winter gear for a quick hunt in 23 degree weather. A most unusual Easter! (But that's why I live in Michigan, not Florida!) The main road I live on is snow covered.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 11:16 am:

FJL, I got that link from a "letter to the editor" in our local paper. Here is the letter:

Editor, Advertiser:
It is amazing that so many people believe global warming is real and is caused by humans. This myth has been largely promoted by the major media that gives much attention to those who support it and very little to those who debunk it.
For example, in December, U.S. Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma chaired a "Climate Change and the Media" meeting. He said that global warming is a hoax. The meeting received almost no major media attention.
At this meeting, Dr. David Deming, a geophysicist at the University of Oklahoma, stated: "I was contacted by a reporter for National Public Radio. He offered to interview me, but only if I would state that the warming was due to human activity. When I refused to do so, he hung up on me."
Deming also said that he received an astonishing e-mail from a major researcher in climate change that read, "We have to get rid of the Medieval Warm Period."
From about 800 A.D.-1300 A.D. we had the Medieval Warm Period, where the world was as warm or warmer than it is today. But, it is an obstacle to those maintaining that the current warming is abnormal.
People who want to hear the other side can go to www.oism.org/pproject for a scientific debunking of global warming. Also listed are the names of more than 17,000 scientists, meteorologists and other technical people who have signed a petition stating that there is no convincing scientific evidence to support global warming.
Sincerely, Robert W. Van de Walle

The special value of science lies not in what it makes of the world, but what it makes of the "Knower".
A: Better a cruel truth than a comfortable delusion..
B: Never meet trouble halfway...it's capable of making the entire journey alone...
C: "I must do something" will solve more problems than "Something must be done."...
D: Sometimes a good scare is worth more than good advice..

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 12:46 pm:

I see Sen. Inhofe of the big oil state of Oklahoma is cited as a
reputable source of information on global warming. Somehow I
suspect that some 40 years ago the senators from Kentucky
were just as dismissive of claims by scientists that tobacco had
a lot to do with lung cancer.

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 01:46 pm:

Global warming is probably very true. but, how much is caused by man and how much is "natural?"

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 01:58 pm:

like Tom said...I think the Earth is in a natural cycle, but man is helping it to change much more quickly than it would have.

IMO, if we are doing anything bad to the Earth, we should change what we're doing. What's wrong with a healthy clean environment, with a lot of animals and plants? Some sacrifices to our materialistic, resource hogging, and wasting ways need to be done.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 02:22 pm:

I'll tell you what's unnatural--snow on the fully bloomed lilac bushes. That's here in TX.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 02:23 pm:

amen, Davesou!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 03:01 pm:

Could Global warming happen without people on it? Sen.John Edwards wife has lung cancer and claims to have never smoked. Now how hard is that to belive? It's good to have a open mind about it,but in this case one must have holes in your head.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 03:05 pm:

Oh and by the way don't get angry at me,it's just what i think.I think therefore I am.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 03:31 pm:

Charlie, Eagle River to Houghton could have been a very hard commute during a storm. I do hope that your son had friends that he could stay with if there were bad weather! I love Eagle River in the summertime!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 03:44 pm:

Here, here, Davidsou!! Japei--I loved the Finnish Easter traditions.
The Orthodox tradition of eating pasha sounds delicious. I will
have to try that one of these days Gormfrog--I liked your
contribution too. To all those who disagree with the idea of global
warming: I am glad that the USA is a democracy and that we have
the right to share our opinions. And last, but not least, Charlie and
Jonathan: You got it right! Your daily pictures surely do remind us
of life in the UP.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 05:46 pm:

Climate is a fascinating but complex subject that is a bit beyond the scope of a forum such as this one. But I will leave you with some interesting information about climate. Rapid climate change is nothing new. During the last ice age, there were periods of time called interstadials, which are defined as mild periods within an ice age. The typical interstadial began with an abrupt warming of Greenland of around 10 degrees celsius over the course of ten to twenty years. Now that's rapid warming with no industrial revolution to blame for it! There have been over twenty of these interstadials over the last 100,000 years. Another interesting event in climate history was a time period called the Holocene Climate Optimum. This period occurred roughly 6000 years ago. The average global summer temperature was at least 3 degrees celsius warmer than today. Forests reached 300km farther northward in Eurasia at the time and trees grew 300m above the current treelines in Britain. Humans were around during this warm time period, however, cars, factories, and the oil industry were not. Lastly, ice ages (one of which is currently ending, perhaps) are rather rare in geologic history. During the last 600 million years there have been only three "icehouse" time periods. "Greenhouse" conditions have been much more common throughout earth history. But humans showed up during an ice age, so that's what we're used to. If you would like citations for this information, I would be happy to provide them. I assure you they are from reputable, peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Science and Nature.

Don't take this to mean I don't think we should be responsible about the environment. I just don't think mongering fear is an appropriate way to educate people about a subject as complex as the climate.

By FFDad (Funkyfatdad) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 06:01 pm:

Hello Folks! We'll never really know if Global Warming exists, or if it is caused by humans. But it seems to me that we humans live in a bubble (our atmosphere) that has a balance between gases that sustain living organisms, and gases that can kill. Why is it a scary idea to be aware of the CO2 and other gases we emit on a daily basis? Why is conserving as much gasoline (for example)as we can sound un-American to some folks? After all, there's limited supply of dead dinosaurs underground!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 07:15 pm:

Tax on the air we breath comming to your city soon. That is what's scary.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 08:17 pm:

Thank you, Dr Nat, for providing some light on the issue of climate!
