I don't know how he does it, but each time Frederic W. Koski adds new photos to his Guest Gallery Album, they're somehow better than the last. Today's photos of a Northern Harrier Hawk are amazing... like he somehow stopped the bird from moving to snap them without any blur. This type of hawk does fly slowly over the ground, looking for a meal of rodents, but these photos are like time is standing still. Thanks Frederic, for bringing the best of the U.P. right here to us on the pages of the Pasty Cam.

Awesome work Mr. Koski! The feathers are so vibrant with the sun shining down on them. Do you have a zoom lense?

These are some super pictures. I do hope that hawk made a meal out of a snake, lol! I do not like snakes!!!

Great job!!

Super...and all of the above! I like how the hawk's color blends in with the landscape. It even has a chameleon-like color change in the shade (3rd photo).

I saw one of these birds in my back yard in Oshkosh a few years ago. He must have just been passing through, I have not seen one since.

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Friday, May 7, 2010 - 10:26 am:

Thanks for the great comments! I've been "stalking" these Harriers for a few years trying to get close enough for a better shot, finally last year and now this year I've been able to get some luck on my side. They are awesome to watch as they hunt the bogs. I used a canon 400mm 5.6 lens.

Amazing photos -- a comment coming very late. Thanks for sharing them, Frederic.

Snakes are useful for keeping away rodents. My fiancee's grandmother used to say "Snakes like to eat mice. If you kill the snakes, you better like eating the mice!"
