Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 05:45 am:

What are the names of the two boats I can see out my window at this moment? Hint: you won't find it in the slideshow.

By Cindy Barga (Hoosiergirl) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 05:54 am:

Aurthur M Anderson and Walter McCarthy

Good Morning!
First Post

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 06:01 am:

Looks to me more like American Mariner and Aurthur M. Anderson.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 06:16 am:

Good Morning. I would have thought it was the Arthur M Anderson and the Phillip R Clarke.
Third Bird

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 06:36 am:

Cindy -

Actually at the moment I posted the note above I could no longer see the McCarthy, which had been passing by my window when I got up this morning:

The only way to see the two boats in the circle was to zoom in - because they were so close together (which is apparently what RD did):
American Mariner

If anyone stumbles upon this forum page months from now, you may be wondering where this wealth of information comes from. See it on the map which is now a permanent fixture on the Bridge Cam page. It is listed beside the new Lake Superior Cam which comes from the Sunset Bay Campground out on Five Mile Point Road.

Marianne - As I type this, the Philip R. Clarke has not yet come into view. You will notice it is downbound, whereas the others are all going west.

Good morning! Have a great day everyone!

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 06:57 am:

There sure is lots of traffic on the Lake this morning. How long will the shipping season last before they break for winter?

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 07:02 am:

How can you include a picture in a post?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 07:54 am:

It's awesome how you can see those ships like that. There really is a lot of traffic this morning.

I love Tricia's Eagle Harbor sunset! That is absolutely breathtaking!

Have a great Hump Day!!

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 08:07 am:

Really enjoy the sunrise/sunsets on the last day of the month any time of year.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 08:16 am:

Those are gorgeous sunset photos today! Thank you for the updated information, Charlie.

We have our first real measurable snow of the year here today. We have about 5 inches of heavy wet stuff here in Midland, where the schools are on a 2-hour delay. We're just on the western and northern edge of the storm. Everything east and south of us is closed because of the bad roads. Even a WNEM TV5 satellite truck got stuck this morning and had to call a tow truck when they were out for their morning show. Many vehicles are off the roads, you get the picture. It is a winter wonderland, though, suitable for a Christmas card!

Oh how I enjoy seeing these pasty subrises and sunsets! Even on gloomy/overcast days, its grand to know that somewhere not too far away the faithful sun is designing a scene for us. I never have seen a "unpleasant" show of sky. Actually stormy skies can be most impressive. One of the best joys of working 3rd shift was seeing the sunrises most people didn't catch. Thanks guys for bringing us such glimpes of beauty and how fitting for these occasions.

By Norma in Midland (Normainmidland) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 10:29 am:

So very excited!! I have ordered Pasties today!! I can't wait until next week to get them!! YUMMMMMMMM

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 10:43 am:

I agree with you, Kay, even 'stormy' skies have their own beauty, even when they're threatening! Once in ND, my husband stood at the 'open' front door and made photos of lightning! Of course it was several miles from us....which is the norm in North Dakota!;)

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 12:41 pm:

I just have to say Thank You, Pasty Cam for adding another cam to the site - Sunset Bay. Aaah, to see the lake - what a beautiful sight!! Can't get enough cams around the Keweenaw.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 02:00 pm:

Beautiful photos, today.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 02:12 pm:

RD: The locks at Sault St. Marie usually close around mid-January depending on weather and ice conditions although shipping on the lower lakes may continue beyond that time.

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 04:26 pm:

Today's question posed another question. Are they freighters or are they lakers? I call them freighters and am posting a poem for the brave that have traveled the Great Lakes.

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

Hollidays, it seems your collection of books of poetry may challenge mine. I love the old classics.

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 - 06:28 pm:

Almost forgot; Congrats to Cindy Barga (Hoosiergirl) for getting the early bird today. Good job, it was a mind bender!

By Cindy Barga (Hoosiergirl) on Thursday, December 1, 2011 - 06:20 am:

Thanks Hollidays! I always check in before I go to work to feed the kids. I rarely bag a bird though.
