One of our "resident" Pasty Cam freighter experts, Rod Burdick, recently sent me these photos from the resuming of the shipping season on Lake Superior. Here's what Rod had to say in his note that accompanied the photos:

Shipping has resumed on Lake Superior after an early opening of the Soo Locks on March 21. The first boat into Marquette for the 2010 season was Charles M. Beeghly which arrived early Tuesday morning, March 23, that's her in the sunrise photo at the top. She was followed closely by Michipicoten which loaded ore and departed before sunrise. Michipicoten returned to Marquette on March 24 for another load of ore (that's when I took the second and third photos here today).
So heads up all you boat nerds our there... it's time to start freighter watching again!

Not much longer to go, and WE CAN DO THIS!!! (Mr. Barclay is keeping track too....let's make CCHS fly off the top of that cool graph of his!) Thank you from all the critters....

Ya can't go wrong with pictures of freightors, especially at this time of year when people are just begging for spring to arrive.

Great pictures!

The Presque Isle area is a jewel.

Ahhh...the sun is shinning in, the coffee is steaming and the pictures of ore shipping is warming the screen. Ahh spring is in my day. Good morning pasty friends!

GREAT PHOTOS ROD!!! HAPPY SPRING TO ALL... :)

I am not an animal fanatic per se but I must say it is nice to have people like Donna and Mr. Barclay supporting the CCHS. It is a great thing for the Copper Country! Everyone should be voting daily to support this cause for a great location on the U.S. map.

Great pictures! Looks like spring has definitely arrived up there.

For the CCHS voting, I have asked some of my family and friends who have ties to the U.P. for their help in voting over the next few weeks. Even if some of them are interested in helping, it can make a difference. CCHS's percentage is gaining on the leaders.

I vote as soon as I see your reminder, Donna. Thanks!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 04:16 pm:

Call me old fashioned, but I like the Great Lakes freighters with the pilothouse at the ship's bow.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 07:28 pm:

Donna, thank you for the reminder each day.I vote, and I hope everyone else does too.It is fun to see how near we are getting to the top.

Looks like we're doing really well. I still vote every day too.
