For most folks, once you've been to Isle Royale, you never stop thinking about going back. The peace and quiet, the beautiful wild surroundings, the slower way of life, all are part of the charm this Keweenaw County gem is known for. Our quick visit today, is made possible by Kevin Henriksen and begins with the the arrival of the Isle Royale Queen IV, in Rock Harbor. You can see all the hikers and campers anxiously awaiting the their dockside departure, so the backpacking adventure can begin. I love how Kevin captured the line being tossed to a worker on the dock in the second photo.

Once your feet are on dry land, you have the choice of backpacking your way around the Island, or taking off by boat, either a rented motorboat, water taxi, canoe or kayak, as Kevin choose to do in his third photo. He's paddling on the mirrored waters of Tobin Harbor, enjoying the clouds both above him and reflected in the water surrounding him. On this trip, Kevin made Caribou Island his homebase, where the last two photos were taken. They give you a feel for the type of countryside you experience when your feet are on the ground over there, first in the daylight and then just about the same exact scene, just before the sun comes up for the day, painting the skies pink. I wonder if this day actually turned out to be not the best sailing weather, since the old saying goes, "Red sky at night, sailors delight, Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning."

For more of Kevin's photos, visit his webpage: www.scenicfotos.com
He has a variety of outdoor photos that you can purchase, many from the Copper Harbor and Isle Royale areas.
Correction on the title of the last photo...it's actually a SUNRISE, not a sunset. :->

I've canoed, sailed and backpacked The Island. My opinion is that the best way to savor the spirit of the island is to backpack, hike down from the ridge to get a source of water (filtered), get views from Siskiwit Mt., see the evidence of previous inhabitants, experience the change of flora from one end of the island to the other, pick blueberries, see moose, foxes, hear wolves (seldom), and loons, read the messages in the shelters, etc. etc. On the other hand, if you haven't felt the grunt of the Tobin Harbor Portage to Dunstan Bay maybe that would do it. After backpacking the island my view about water completely changed. I am VERY CAREFUL how I use water. It's a caution we might all consider. Hot running water is a wonder of the world!
