By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, June 26, 2009 - 09:59 am:

Good morning! It's sure been hot! I'm lovin' it! Supposed to cool off for the weekend though. All the way down to the 80's. Summer is here.

By John W Anderson (Wd8rth) on Friday, June 26, 2009 - 10:26 am:

What a waste of a perfectly good kid. Hope the bears didn't get him. hihi

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, June 26, 2009 - 11:49 am:

Good Deb; you can have some (or all) of our heat!! :-P

The past 2 days have seen the warmest days recorded ever in June at 104. It's supposed to cool down a little ("down" to 99) this weekend before returning to 100-102 next week. In addition, we have had no rain at our house since early May which has prompted many counties to issue a burn and fireworks ban until we get some rain, which according to our weather-lady, won't be anytime soon.

4 more weeks until the Dr and I are vegging on hopefully a cooler Lake Superior......

Inquiring minds want to know; If this is a Yooper forum, why are all of the posters from other states? Don't like the winters UP here? Come on guys, winter only lasts nine months.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, June 26, 2009 - 06:04 pm:

How about the fact I want to work for a little more than minimum wage in a state that frankly is one major bankruptcy away from a complete shutdown. I, as well as most every other poster here, would love to come back home and live out our lives; unfortunately, the local economy doesn't lend itself to attract quality workers.....

I guess because I don't live there anymore I shouldn't post here or even pay my PastyNet bill for internet access and support an area I love; what say you Pasty Admin???

Mary says: Actually, quite a few of our visitors are just like you, Capt. Paul and your better half, Dr. Nat...they're either former Yoopers or folks that have visited and fell in love with the U.P. and hope to one day do more than just visit. The Pasty Cam is their connection to "home" or where they'd like to be, but cannot due to economic issues.
So, post away, Capt. Paul (you too, Dr. Nat, along with all our other visitors) and by all means, please keep paying that PastyNet bill! :->

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Friday, June 26, 2009 - 06:22 pm:

Frankly, I think the pleasant Keweenaw winters are much nicer than the summers I must deal with here. But I do have a family to feed, and that's hard to do in a place where I can't find a job. And don't think I haven't tried. The Eagle Project is on hold, and I haven't heard any news concerning my application to teach at MTU.

Not living there has nothing to do with snow and everything to do with the fact that the Keweenaw has been in an economic depression since the unions made C&H close.

Find me a job for a scientist with my qualifications and I'll be home in a heartbeat, happily blowing snow all nine months of winter.

Hardly in da UP, but this one's stirring up increasing interest in Arizona. From the Arizona Daily Star, April 25, 2009,
click → Resolution Copper may spend billions on mine. Quoted in part:

Quote:

"Resolution — a joint venture of international mining companies Rio Tinto PLC and BHP Billiton Ltd. — is banking on land-swap legislation that would give the company 3,025 acres in the Tonto National Forest that Resolution says could yield up to 500,000 tons of copper a year. Included in the land swap would be the 746-acre Oak Flats campground, an area where mining has been prohibited by presidential order since 1955.

The 7,000-foot-deep mine could produce 25 percent of the domestic supply of copper, Salisbury said.

'We see it as one of the largest ore bodies in the world — there are not many like this. It's deep, complex and expensive to get at,' Salisbury said.

The project could create 1,200 jobs at the mine and another 200 to 400 contractors, and generate $800 million worth of economic activity annually in Arizona, Salisbury said."

I'm sure Dr. Nat (Drnat) & Capt. Paul (Eclogite) are already very aware of this one!
More here, from Rio Tinto: Inferred Resource at Resolution Copper, Arizona, USA.

Yooperdoo just moves to the UP and already SHE'S telling those of us who have lived there a lot of our lives that we don't belong on this site and SHE does? Whatever.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Saturday, June 27, 2009 - 12:03 am:

C'mon J- give us a break, all of the above poster's love the U.P. and the Keweenaw, you ain't foolin me! Way to go Deb, Doc, Capt. & Mary, could not have said it better myself, I'd live there right now if I could support my family, & hope to be there one day to live out my golden years!

By Yooperdoo (Yooperdoo) on Saturday, June 27, 2009 - 07:01 am:

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 27, 2009 - 07:31 am:

You're welcome. I don't know what else you would have expected.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, June 27, 2009 - 10:54 am:

More fine pics. Can't say I blame the support 4 the Green Bay Packers, since the Detroit Lions had a winless 2008 season (LOL).

By Cindy Barga (Hoosiergirl) on Saturday, June 27, 2009 - 12:57 pm:

Lighten up Deb, I think she is just kidding.
