A Copper Harbor adventure on snowshoes, yielded David Clark some interesting photos of items found on the way out to Hunter's Point and Porter's Island. David explained that he used an ultra-wide angle lens to create some of the effects, making his friend Kyle look super tall and also giving him some neat "zoom" effects in the other photos, too. To capture that second picture of the cedar roots entangled around the rock, David said he just about had to stick his head in those roots. That third shot of the ice shows more of the ultra-wide lens effect, making the ice look like there's a frozen wall, reaching up to the sky. In David's fourth photo you see a set of tracks that they followed for a little way, but never found the animal itself (David says, "thank goodness"), nor any sign that it had caught anything. Any trackers out there that can help identify what type of animal made those footprints?

Such a beautiful and busy world out there. Even while we snuggle down indoors! What a wonderful world!

Welcome to all the visitors in the Copper Country for the Clean Snowmobile Challenge at MTU's Keweenaw Research Center. We bumped into a bunch of them last night in Hancock, where Edie and I enjoyed my birthday dinner at the Waterfront Restaurant. Our compliments to the staff and to John Gervais, who manages the Waterfront as well as the Hut Inn, an important part of Pasty Central's headquarters in Kearsarge.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday, and all the notes about our new dog and pets in general. Someone asked if Shadow could "Happy Dance" like Buddy used to. He hasn't yet, but he does have a trick that is quite interesting. If a cup or glass is down where he can reach it, he will pick it up in his teeth - without spilling a drop - and carry it somewhere and set it down so he can drink it. I happened to notice this as he picked up Edie's glass of buttermilk from an end table on St. Patrick's Day. He dropped it only after I startled him. We're now in the habit of keeping our drinks out of Shadow's reach :o)

TGIF!

Love the pics today, it just goes to show how amazing the hand of god is and how someone can capture natures beauty.

I'm with Dave, some kind of Canid - maybe a coyote - I've seen several out on the edge of the ice but it's hard to tell without measurements. Two in particular seemed to be exploring the ice tumbles together for a den location.

Happy first day of SPRING!!

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 07:58 am:

Hi all! Photographer here -- thanks for the kind comments. :)

I would be interested if anyone can identify the tracks in the last shot -- it was definitely alone (if it was a dog, nobody was out walking it) and extended for quite a way along the point and Porter's Island. My first thought was a bobcat. I would be a bit surprised if a lone wolf was that close to town, but perhaps it was being adventurous. We never found any signs of it catching any prey, either. Any ideas?

Also, if you like these, you might be interested in my photo blog ... except that for some reason right now, my photos aren't showing up. Weird! Hopefully it will be working again later.

Oops, I should include that link to my photo blog. Sorry...

Dogs usually drag their feet enough to leave extra marks between the foot prints and often they wander from side to side, wild ones are usually headed somewhere with a purpose and leave a fairly straight trail.

Awesome!

Those do look like dog tracks of some type. Great pictures, still haven't made it out there this winter the weekends keep getting too busy so thanks for the pictures.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 08:50 am:

Great pictures! Those canine related tracks are of good size. They remind me of the size of our late Doberman Pinscher's tracks. How tall is Kyle actually?

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 09:01 am:

Janie -- heh, thanks. Kyle is average height, maybe 5'10". Aren't angles fun? :)

As for the tracks, maybe someone's dog was running loose?

Here's a site that has coyote tracks in snow.

During our last visit almost four years ago, we drove past the Hut Inn in hopes of dinner, and it was closed. Maybe they moved, not closed? This was the location right on U.S. 41 that was in operation during the late 80s/early 90s. I'd like to know where it is now, for our next visit.

Happy Spring Equinox, everyone! Nice pics today! Looks like spring is trying to make an appearance very, very gradually. (As usual.) I'm sure you're all eager up there for it to hurry up and arrive!

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Friday, March 20, 2009 - 01:46 pm:

It was closed then and now is open in the same location. It was purchased and remodeled and now is the headquarters for pasty central pasty's and the internet service.

cat paws are more rectangular shaped then those above. The pictures of the coyote tracks are interesting...much smaller and closer together, even when running.
