Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 01:17 am:

As today we complete a full decade of the Pasty Cam, the tradition of remembering our loved ones and friends at the end of the month continues. A moment of quiet reflection honoring those that have passed on before us:

George "Rudy" Fredrickson
Carolyn B. Kerr
Delores Mack
Francis "Frannie" Marier
Robert J. Nekervis
Dee A. Nelson
Dorothy Rheault
Edward Shaling
The men and women who gave their all

You may wish to add the names of those you'd like to honor, so feel free to jot a note below. Special thanks to David Riutta, for the beautiful sunset for this reflection.

RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 06:55 am:

These monthly remembrances have meant a lot to me over the years, occasionally being the first news of the passing of a friend from long ago, as today in the case of Rudy Fredrickson.

By DEAN SCHWARTZ SR. (Lulu) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 06:59 am:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY SISTER-IN-LAW, CAROL SMITH OF CHARLOTTE, N.C. AND MY COUSIN BARBARA (SCHWARTZ) BROWN, WHO WE ARE PUTTING TO REST TODAY. THEY WERE AND ARE TWO VERY SPECIAL LADIES.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 07:48 am:

I wish to remember Ruth Shook, Dan Balogh, and Paul Pesick,
three retired middle-school counselors whom we lost coincidentally in short succession. These three were exemplary in their ability to take the time to listen, restrain from giving 'obvious' advice, and guide the middle school people into understanding what their next best decision is.

By R.Scott Payne (Miyooper2b) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 08:33 am:

I would like to remember my friends father Robert K.Cowles of anderson indiana buried yesterday......for those who knew the family it is safe to say we can all sleep a little better knowing that there is only one Bob Cowles running around town now. Sorry for your loss Bobby.

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 08:55 am:

Remembering A.J.Kent. An outstanding Navy Corpsman, Marine and Physician Assistant.

By Yooper in MN (Yooper_in_mn) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 09:15 am:

In memory of my grandfathers, Mala and Tapio. Also in memory of Ray Wiig, Lee Sjoholm, Gina Maki, Bob Maki, and Beth Forslund.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 10:26 am:

In loving memory of my two wonderful parents, of Texas and Iowa. My terrific Daddy, Frank Colburn, died Feb 14, 1985, when my oldest son was just 5 months old. My Daddy was looking forward to teaching my oldest son to fish and play golf and fix things, like Grandpa did. My son can fix a lot of things, but Grandpa's loving input would have helped a lot. My wonderful Mom, Marge Colburn, died Feb 9, 1991, before my youngest son was born. I really wish they had been alive for my three sons to get to know and love, as I did. :-)

Also, in loving memory of my Godmother, Auntie Margaret Wynne, who was about the sweetest lady you would ever meet, and of a number of my other relatives, who all passed away during the month of Feb. Needless to say, I breathe a sigh of relief when Feb passes into March! And, hopefully, Spring is around the corner!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 11:17 am:

Just a couple of notes about personal friends of mine in today's list of honored names.

Delores Mack was our Sunday School and choir director back when Edie and I were teenagers. Delores and her husband Les were the ones who first brought us to the Copper Country in the mid-sixties. They also served on the board at Gitche Gumee here in Eagle River for many years. We'll always remember Mrs. Mack's sparkle. Our condolences to Les and the family.

Many people have a role in shaping our lives. Edward Shaling was my Uncle Eddy, who passed away just a few days ago. I was profoundly influenced by his zest for life, love of music, and curiosity about technology. The first color TV I ever saw was in his home, and he handed me the microphone the first time I recorded and listened to my own voice. Edward's encouragement has been looking over my shoulder all these years whenever I do anything technical, like producing our "Pasty Cameos" or publishing these daily pages. Thanks, Uncle Eddy.

And thanks to all who frequent these pages, whether actively contributing or quietly observing. Our logs tell us 10-15,000 of you stop by every day for a glimpse of life from the U.P. For a note about some of the folks who help keep us going, see today's What'sUP

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 02:48 pm:

In loving memory of our grandmother Mary Laplander of Woodside who left us one February day in 1970. I remember our kids were all little, the youngest just a baby, but we made the trek up there in our station wagon to the funeral. Returning in the night the stretch along US41 and US 2 from about Trenary to the bridge it was minus 2F plus windchill and the roads were covered with fresh snow, no tracks at all. All one could see were the ditches or snowbanks on either side. No traffic at all either way. I remember commenting "this must be just like being on the moon!" It was so cold one could not lean your arm or head against the car windows.
Things like this always remain in your memory!

By Char P (Charp) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 03:25 pm:

To see some of the ages of the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country was overwhelming. They were just kids...all of them...they were sons, fathers, brothers, husbands, uncles...my prayers go out to their families and friends...
