Dean Woodbeck (Dwoodbeck) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 06:17 am:

Jonathan Hopper captured this view of the Houghton Township building eight years ago. It was a blustery cloudy day, interrupted by this fleeting ray of sunshine.

The unseasonable warmth just keeps on coming in the Keweenaw, with temperatures in the low 40s today.

Good Morning!!!

Morning!!!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 06:54 am:

Boy, those were the days! Snow!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 06:56 am:

Morning!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 07:17 am:

i kinda like 40+ in January and no snow. Now I don't have to move to Arizona or Florida.
Still frost on the windshield, though. If only that would stop.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 07:59 am:

I'm with you David -- I have not problem at all with no snow.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 08:01 am:

I heard on the radio this morning that some folks from Colorado are selling snow from their blizzard on e-bay.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 08:37 am:

Good morning, is that like buying swampland in Florida?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 09:10 am:

I think it is a flaky business deal. I suppose they could advertise it as snowman kits.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 10:03 am:

I think we can blame the lack of snow on an "El Nono" year.
Cha-Cha, you're funny!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 10:17 am:

Looks aren't everything. :-\

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 10:20 am:

Mornin' from NW Illinois. Chilly but more spring-like than January. Noticed a couple minutes ago that some of my irises are sprouting next to the front porch! For this we stayed home from wintering in Texas? To Deb S. my email won't send but I can read okey, please pass the word.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 11:34 am:

We're going to spend three weeks in Florida & we're leaving this mild weather & relatively no snow behind. Go figure!!! Ha Ha

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 11:47 am:

That means it will snow here the minute you get to Florida. Mark your calendars.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 11:52 am:

Cotton,
It'll still be shorts weather. Instead of not knowing how warm to dress and getting sick because of all the temperature fluctuations, you'll just be kicked back in the sun. Remember those of us still in the almost frozen North.
Mr. Deb

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 11:58 am:

For many years we have endured the piles and piles of
white fluffy snow here in the Copper Country. It is a
way of life here. The rest of the United States pays no
attention until THEY get some of it too. My reaction to
the complaints about the weather is simply tell them to
put on the Sorels, Parkas, mitts, scarves, etc. etc. and
then put one foot in front of the other behind a scoop,
and shut up about the weather. We have no control
over Mother Nature.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 12:33 pm:

Imagine the "tens-of-millions" of gallons of fuel that are being saved per day on a statewide basis because of the lack of snow removal. All of the road commissions, cities and villages not having to plow snow; add on top of that all the parking lots that normally would have to be plowed every day at this time of year. Then figure in the low heating oil consumption because of the mild temps, should be quite a fuel surplus. [and a surplus of funds for our road commissions] Just trying to look at the bright side of our lost tourism.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 02:47 pm:

Musicteacher, you hit the nail right on the head! My reaction to the complaints is; if you can't deal with the weather than you have no clue what a Yooper goes through.

By Robert - CO (Halork) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 03:13 pm:

So, have the local radio stations been playing the "Heikki Lunta Snow Dance" song yet?

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 03:14 pm:

Daveofmohawk,
Thanks for showing us the glass half full. I am waiting (not very patiently) to go snowshoeing.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 03:33 pm:

That photo of Jonathan's is my kind of winter. Or else a soft silent night of just listening to the snowflakes flying and then landing. Everything muffled. Now there's some memories I cherish!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 03:50 pm:

Cindy, I think you better do that snow dance!

By JARMO ITÄNIEMI (Japei) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 03:51 pm:

Hello boys and girls..today SAIMAA;

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 03:58 pm:

Have you ever tried to explain the Heikki Lunta Snow Dance Song to a 13 and 7 year old? I would have played it for them, but I have it (somewhere) on a 45, and haven't had a record player since I was stationed in Germany back in the 1980s! Sheesh. Here's hoping you all get the weather you want.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 04:09 pm:

Daveofmohawk, do you suppose even though all this money is being saved, they'll come up with a strategy to raise taxes somehow? Also, is there any way to get a copy of the Heikki Lunta Snow Dance Song? Maybe it would work here in MN.
Mr. Deb

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 04:41 pm:

The robins are back!!! Or else there are about 40 late travelers who haven't gotten south. No Kidding! We just spotted a huge flock of robins out behind the garage near the pool. There had to be at least 3 trees fulls!!! Could hardly believe my eyes! And Deb.S. my email situation may be fixed! yeeehawwww

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 05:13 pm:

So while many of us are suffering from a lack of snow, what does Jarmo give us today? Some nice snow scenes from Finland? ...
Nooooo, some awsome, beautiful summer boating pictures! Groannnn!

Thank you, Jarmo!

The only other thing I have to say is: "When can we leave for Lappeenranta/Lake Saimaa?"

Incidentally, it doesn't look like the snow is piling up in Finland yet either, here from the Finnish Meteorological Institute is a snow depth map of Finland. Note that even the northern half of the country has only 4-10 inches (10-25 cm) of snow, and only far northern Lapland has 10-20 inches (25-50 cm), and temperatures range from 25 to 36°F (-4 to +2°C)!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 05:17 pm:

Ms. Katie, boy nature is sure a mess! My daylilies are coming up and the birds are chirping like it's spring. The groundhog that lives under the garage foundation has been cleaning out his little den. Now, because of all the little critters, I hope the weather here doesn't take a turn for the worse.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 05:21 pm:

I'm not concerned about the taxes I pay. I'm just VERY concerned about where this money goes!

Also, Daveofmohawk's comments make me wonder--in the given lessening of demand for gas, why are prices rising again? Doesn't 'supply and demand' generally indicate less demand, lower prices?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 05:23 pm:

Only for things we don't need Maija!! Strange how that works.
Mr. Deb

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 05:27 pm:

Hey Mr. Deb and all others interested in the Heikki Lunta song...
You can order your own copy, I found the information on the Heikinpäivä website. Here's what you need to do: For the price of $10 (or $13.85 for priority mail) one can purchase the two Heikki Lunta songs — "Heikki Lunta" and "Heikki Lunta Go Away" on a CD from: WMPL, P.O. Box 547, Hancock, Michigan 49930

By the way, Heikinpäivä activities in Hancock, begin on January 11th, with the parade, Polar Bear Dive and such to take place on January 20th!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 05:30 pm:

Now that you mention it, Mary, I've been wondering about Heikinpaiva. How can there be a polar bear dive with the canal not frozen and only days to go!? (retorical question)

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 05:32 pm:

I don't know this for a fact, so I'm just speculating, but I imagine they could just jump in the water from the shoreline...it's not through the ice, but it's still certainly "freezing cold"!! :->

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 05:35 pm:

Da way 'tings are goin', mebby da Polar Bear Dive will be able to launch from da bridge! (No need to carve a hole in da ice ... no ice!) Groan!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 05:39 pm:

Thank you Mary!! Trust me everyone, if there's even been skim ice, that water is cold enough to.......just think brass monkeys!
Mr. Deb

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 07:38 pm:

Maija is not concerned with paying taxes and just about where the money goes.3 and 1/2 dollars out of every 100 dollars paid in income taxes in the U.S.is paid by the bottom 50% of wage earners.
Top 1% pay 1/3 34.27%
Top 5% pay 54.36%
Top 10% pay 65.84 %
Top 50% pay 96.54 %
The bottom 50% pay 3.46%
I think i know why your not concerned, however you should be.

By John Beckius (Johncantonmi) on Thursday, January 4, 2007 - 11:35 pm:

And thats the way it should be, Dave, for reasons to long to go into here.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 09:57 am:
