Eight years ago, Jonathan Hopper caught these two good U.P. citizens just completing their electoral duties on Election Day 1998. That's the fire hall in Laurium.

Today we have just a dusting of snow on the ground, with some chilly temperatures remaining for a couple of days. During a run on a trail through the woods yesterday, the snow started falling and it felt like running in a postcard.

They are good UP citizens! So many people moan and groan about the government yet they are usually the ones that don't vote. Is it because they don't care? At least when you cast your ballot, you did your part in trying to help the country!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 08:29 am:

I did my my part here in Texas... I voted for Kinky!! :P

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 08:33 am:

Morning! It's VERY chilly here this morning bus supposed to warm up this weekend.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 09:28 am:

Captain Paul, you sooooo funny!!!

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 09:50 am:

It's time to try out my new handle which Mary gave me on Wed.
- Charles in Esky rather than in Adrian. So far no snow here,
and our walks remain wonderful either in the park or walking
alongside on Lake Shore Drive. Today the beautiful view looking
south toward the vastness of Lake Michigan was enhanced by
the view of a big oreboat heading out into the lake. A few
minutes later when I could see the sweep of the bay looking
northwards toward Gladstone, there was another oreboat at the
dock. Thinking politically, I haven't voted yet, but I have been
going door-to-door for several weeks now campaigning for my
girls Jenny and Debbie. However that comes out, it has been
such fun to walk the streets in my old hometown and
occasionally even seeing some of my old classmates from 50
years ago. I even had a chance to visit with one of my old high
school teachers who is now 91 but still in his old house. Is that
cool or what!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 10:09 am:

Good job Charles, I think you just made every former yooper and yooper wannabe homesick for the weekend!! I hope you can live with that?? lol

Oh and btw... Michigan Tech is ranked #18 in the country in men's hockey, woohoo!! I have on my Tech jersey today (at work no less) showing a little Husky pride. Also the good Dr. Nat and I are going to a hockey game here in Houston tonight where we get to see 3 former Tech players on the ice (Brett Engelhardt, Colin Murphy, and John Scott). Should be loads of to catch up on their happenings.

Capt. Paul, good for you...voting for Kinky! Here in Illinois I'm going for the third party myself. Neither of the big guys/gals is offering anything but the same old garbage. Won't do much good but I'll feel better! As for Charles in Eskey(?). I can't imagine how wonderful you must feel in your new/old home. And seeing those massive ships has to be marvelous. I'm not sure I could go back after 50 years from "home" as all my old neighborhoods in Milwaukee have changed so drastically! But it's still home.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 10:23 am:

I just went back to the town where I was born after 25 years of being away. It's an old coal mining town in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Not much has changed there... I even ate at the same diner I used to. Same people, still sitting in their regular places. All of us just older and greyer now.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 10:24 am:

Good morning to everyone. But esp. to Deb and Mr. Deb. As you may have figured it out, I'm able to do the internet but still no emails. Can't receive nor send. I'm at the end of my line, don't know where to go anymore about my 'puter problems!!! AAAAGGGGGGGG! Hi to all you CC residents, I'm trying to picture how it looks now, where I was able to go in June's Pasty Fest weekend.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 10:38 am:

Dr. Nat, are you familiar with McSherrystown, PA? My Dad and my Grandmother lived there. Also, York, PA? My maiden name was Pfaltzgraff, am related to Pfaltzgraff Pottery, which I don't get free, have to buy it with no discount! Such is life!!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 11:25 am:

Wish we had someone like "Kinky" running for governor in Ill-annoy, at least he has a sense of humor and makes sense!!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 12:51 pm:

Well, here we basically have the governor who only appears at re-election, grandma who can't add, the democrat who no ones heard of, and Kinky.

Plus I figure, if Minnesota can have "The Body" for governor and "The Goovernator" in California, why can't Texas have a Kinky governor??

By Richard Johnson (Dick_fl) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 01:09 pm:

I guess I'll weigh in on this voting thing. Here in Palm Beach County Florida I voted on tuesday and was NOT allowed to vote for my congressman! The elections office said that is because my congressman is running unopposed. That is all well and good but what if I wanted to write in someone? There is no place on the ballot to write in for congressman. Other people are unopposed and still have their names listed and also have a space for a write-in. I feel cheated. And also, how can my congressman win if he has zero votes? Leave it to Palm Beach County Florida to screw up another election.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 02:17 pm:

Joanie:
Sure, I'm familiar with McSherrystown and York. In fact, I spent the night in York last week. The town I used to live in, Ashland, is to the north.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 03:28 pm:

Dr. Nat, do you remember "American Bandstand"? My Grandma Kathy owned the building that "American Bandstand" used for their first opening, somewhere around McSherrystown. Hey, next time you go to York, tell my relatives at Pfaltzgraff Pottery to quit being so CHEAP, give Joanie a free set of dishes, ha, ha!!
