Frank Jezek sent in these photos to give us a taste of winter in Ontonagon. Looks like they're not lacking any snow this year, either.

His icicle shot brings back memories for me, as a kid, breaking off a long icicle and eating it like a popsicle. No flavor and probably full of dirt, but it was fun anyway. Then of course they were always handy for an icicle sword fight, too. Good memories.

Frank's last two photos indicate that he won't be sitting on his deck anytime soon with the piles of snow accumulated on whatever is hiding under those mounds. Not to mention the overhang of the roof snow. I wouldn't doubt that like many folks over this past week, Frank has had that roof cleaned off, ready for a new onslaught of snow. After all, it is only January... we have more winter to come.

Winter's creativity.

How long will it take for all that snow to melt? June? But it sure makes for beautiful pictures!

Guess I'm a grouch but I'm tired of snow! More predicted for our area tonight.:<
Frank, maybe you can hire somebody's grandson to shovel for you.;)

Oh my goodness! That looks just like what we saw
when we were in Lake Linden in December. My mom
says the icicles are hanging to the ground again.
Winter can leave at any time, even though it does
make for some spectacular pictures!!

The snow total sign in Kearsarge says 184-inches so far, that's about 100-inches ahead of last yr. at this time.

Remember that saying about March weather coming and going like the lion and the lamb. Well, that must be for the rest of the world.

Sometimes in the UP, Winter comes in like a lion and goes out like a lion.

… and just for comparison:

Location (click each link for details) As of Snowfall to date
Keweenaw County Snowfall chart Jan 16 191"
John Dee (Mohawk, MI) Jan 17 166"
MTU, KRC at Houghton County Airport Jan 17 124.25"
MTU, Mont Ripley Jan 8 156"
Twin Lakes (unofficial) Jan 18 161"

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, January 19, 2014 - 10:11 pm:

There is even a more current authority for snowfall in Keweenaw County, as the Courthouse usually runs a day or two behind, and we update more often the Snow Thermometer at Pasty Central, the oldest page of its type in Michigan. As of Jan 17 the Keweenaw total was 192".

By D. A. (Midwested) on Monday, January 20, 2014 - 02:36 am:

I did some quick calculations regarding the percentage of snow fallen that is still on the ground.

Interesting results:

Keweenaw County = 19%
John Dee = 23%
MTU, KRC at Houghton County Airport = 31%
MTU, Mont Ripley = 36% (They cheat)
Twin Lakes = 26% (estimate)

Sunlight, wind, and average temperatures would play into sublimation, blowing and melting. Plus there would be a bit of a non-linear factor regarding compaction.
