This month Paul and Nathalie Brandes (Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat), have been here UP North taking in as much of the Keweenaw as they could, starting with the main drag in Calumet, better known as Fifth Street. It looks like our cameraman is standing right in front of Copper World for the first shot and actually the second shot, too, since St. Anne's Church (now known as the Keweenaw Heritage Center), is right behind where he's standing.

Paul and Nat continued on after Calumet, with a stop for a classic snowy scene with the Church of the Assumption in Phoenix. This church served the mining community of Cliff and was originally named St. Mary's Church. In 1899 the church was dismantled and reassembled where is sits now and was given its present name at that time.

Heading further north, our travelers stopped in Eagle Harbor for a photo of the Lighthouse there. No trip to the Keweenaw is complete without taking in the view of this sailor's beacon, as it especially stands out this time of year, surrounded by ice and snow.

That does it for our mini tour of the landmarks of the Keweenaw. Hope you enjoyed the journey!

Sounds like Capt. had a lot of confessions to make :-)

Very cool, Paul & Nat! I spent some time on Fifth Street, as always, at Copper World. Love visiting with those people. They're always so very friendly with everybody! Went home with some treasures from there as always, also :-)

Very beautiful photos to view this morning after the rath of Storm Plato. I love the one of the Phoenix Church as I had a friend get married in that church several years back. All of the photos are grand.

Beautiful winter scenes, Capt. and Dr. Nat, but aren't you glad to be back in the 'tropics'?

my moms-parents, owned a restaurant at the end of fifth street when she was growing up.

I love all the beautiful local photos today. Winter makes for some awesome pics!

Wow!! Didn't expect our photos to be posted once again today. I guess Mary still has a few tricks up the sleeve of her down-filled jacket; thanks for featuring them!!

Absolutely not, Shirley!!! I would very much rather be back UP north where I know to expect snow and chilly temps, not close to 80 and severe storms on the way.

Thanks for the beautiful pictures! I sure do miss Calumet & the Copper Country area! The cam for 5th Street must be covered with snow because it is all white. Is someone able to clean it off?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, February 21, 2013 - 12:50 pm:

You may have something there, Capt. I sorta felt that way living in ND as opposed to 'tornado alley' here in southern OH.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, February 21, 2013 - 01:11 pm:

I should have mentioned earlier that I was indeed standing in front of one of our favourite shops in the Keweenaw, Copper World on Fifth St. As you can see, it was a fantastic day for photos and just roaming around the Peninsula.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Thursday, February 21, 2013 - 02:23 pm:

Good pics.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Thursday, February 21, 2013 - 02:25 pm:

The shot of 5th street in Calumet must not have been very recent because the streets in Calumet are absolutely horrible, wouldn't recommend driving on them even with a 4WD. There's a good chance of knocking your front end out of line or breaking a spring with the deep potholes in the mat.

If I had written the words to "These are a Few of my Favorite
Things," I would have changed "things" to " places," and used the
pictures that Dr. Nat and Capt .Paul took.

Thanks for the complements everyone!
Hopefully we'll be able to supply many more photos like these in the near future.....
