Memorial Day is a day to remember those that died in service to our country, along with loved ones that have also passed on. So when Donna MacIntosh sent in these photos, I knew they'd be the perfect photos for honoring all those that were lost during the wars throughout the history of our country.

Donna found this float on display in Baraga at the time and is a reproduction of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. The man who made this float, was George McNeil, from Baraga and while serving in the Pacific, he was an eye witness to this very scene. You can read the rest of the story of the making and maintaining of this float, in the photos above. The Keweenaw Detachment of the Marine Corps League, is now in charge of maintaining and displaying this reproduction both in parades and other community events. There are costs in the maintenance, so if you're interested in helping with the project they've undertaken in preserving our history, the donation information is listed in the bottom photo.

Please remember those that gave their lives for our freedoms, as you go about your day, today. There are a number of Memorial Day tributes taking place in the area to honor these brave men and women. If you're making a visit to the cemetery today, take a few minutes to stop by the Veteran's plot and whisper your thanks while there. Have a safe Memorial Day.

What a wonderful picture today! My husband's uncle was a Marine on Iwo Jima and received two purple hearts as a result. I'm remembering him, as well as my husband, Steve Bashaw, who didn't die in Viet Nam but did as a result of that conflict. Also remembering a young Army Sgt. whose family I met recently in an airport. The family was flying on the same flight as me and we got to talking. I thought they were going to a joyous reunion only to find out that their son had been killed the week before in Afghanistan and they were going to a memorial. Bless him!!

As we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Liberty, another way to honor them is listing them on the Find a Grave's website, and you can post virtual flowers for them or for those who are already posted there.

I was part of 107th Engineers National Guard some 60 years ago when we marched in a Memorial Day parade from the armory out to the cemetary in Calumet. Today I sat on my front porch as I watched the assembly and start of the parade here in our small towns of Rockwood/Gibraltar. This is a great tradition that is being carried on to honor those that have also served in recent conflicts.

Remembering all who fought and are still fighting for our country's freedom. The pictures are so fitting for the day. We're watching "The Green Beret" today and watched "Tora, Tora, Tora" last night. Have always loved watching the war movies. Gives you a little idea of what these guys (and gals now) went through for our country.

Remembering my dad, Ben Durocher, a veteran of WWII, my husband, Ron Simons, who was in the navy but saw no action. Two of my sons were in the Navy during times of peace. And then I'm remember my good friend's husband, Steve Bashaw, a classmate of mine who passed away one year ago yesterday from cancer he got from exposure to Agent Orange. Thinking so much about him and his family and how he was taken far too soon. And one more, Kosk's son, who was taken over a year ago already in Afghanistan. Praying for strength for his family today, also.

Deb: Thank you for your kind thoughts and for remembering my
family. It was a hard day. I wore my American poppy at work and
explained its significance to my Canadian friends. My daughter and
grandson and my Cousin John decorated Matt's grave in Eagle River.
It made me feel better to know that his grave and the life he led had
been honored even though my husband and I couldn't be there.

Blessings to Laurie and all of the other service people living and
dead.

Thinking of and giving thanks to my father, Stuart
Seppala and his brothers who fought in WWII, also
my cousin Dale Moilanen. You are truly American
Heroes.

My father fought through the Iwa Jima conflict. He never spoke about it. I imagine it was because he saw so many of his fellow comrades die. He passed away in 1975 & so did his memories,
