Joe Kirkish said he periodically checks out Lake Superior and what she's been up to over the winter, in front of his summer cottage in the Keweenaw. Today's photos are from an excursion he took just last week and he reports that normally by mid-February that little cove in the third photo, would be frozen over with huge ice lumps rising above it, but not this winter.

The last photo is from Charlie, with a fresh coating of powder this morning in Eagle River, but he reports it is melting away as you read these words.

With such a mild winter, it makes me a little nervous as to what the spring and summer will bring for the weather here UP North. Guess we'll just have to wait and see!

I'd like to see at least one of these (possibly all three!) for WoW's! Wonderfully calming, all those blues. :)

Wow is right! These are the good kind of blues. I just have to choose one for my desktop background today.

Wonder if Dr. Nat has done any investigation of seasonal patterns and if there is any correlation between above/below average temperature patterns?

You gota love the Keweenaw BLUES!
Nice shoot'n Joe!

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 - 07:30 pm:

I love the first photo. It is so serene and calming. Actually, I like all the photos today. I miss the Lake.

In answer to the question about temperature patterns in the Keweenaw, I have never studied that. Just for fun, I once began looking at whether ENSO (El Niņo Southern Oscillation) had an impact on snowfall in the area. Unfortunately I never finished that because I got distracted by a research project I was actually paid to do.

In Joe's top pic, it looks like a Superior monster has his eyes on you. Like it's waiting for someone to come along as a snack. Careful now!!
