Looks like Robert and Shirley Wetton have a few visitors around their yard, looking for something to eat. Many folks here in the Keweenaw, put out feed for the deer, so they can make it through the long, cold winters we usually get.

The deer also rely on fruit that has been left on the trees or dropped to the ground , like apples. That's what it looks like the deer in the second and third photos from Melanie Hakala Rossi, were doing when she snapped their pictures. With those snow-covered noses, it's a dead give-away that they've been sniffing through the snow for some dinner.

In all three photos, you can see those ears, perked up and alert to what's going on around them. They're always watching and ready to bolt in a moment's notice, if something doesn't seem quite right. More of nature at work.

I love these pictures. But then I guess Mary knows how much I love deer pictures. When at my mom's, I can't wait for the gorgeous creatures to show up. Thanks for starting my day like this!!

That one deer looks very talkative. "What, sugar-beets again?

Awesome pics!

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 10:01 am:

Brings back memories of when we would go out to the farm of August Garon on the Trap Rock River back in the 40's to visit and feed the deer out of our hands.
We still have many deer here in Monroe area and see them walking down the street at dusk almost daily.

I love seeing the deer in our yard in Boyne City. Charlie isn't so happy when they eat our trees and stuff... Love these pictures!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 10:47 am:

I have often seen deer on our property over 24 years, even have a lot of their visits on film. They love it around the pond. The only place I do not like to see deer....is on the highway! There's alot of that around this area too, unfortunately.

By Therese (Therese) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 12:42 pm:

I used to feed the deer before the local
herd became carriers of bovine tb. I
would clear the walk through the front
garden after work, and as the light turned
purple would spread feed along it.
The deer would gather on the road and
wait.

FANTASTIC PHOTOS! YOU MADE MY DAY, THANKS.

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 01:54 pm:

WAY cool! I only see the deer here when it's dark..but they eat their veggies! And my bird seed! lol

By tom fisher (Osceola) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 02:00 pm:

Back in the mid- to late 1970's a bunch of us were returning to da Tech from a skiing/snowshoeing outing in the Estivants. We came down through Eagle River and there under the cedars, must have been a dozen or so deer feeding. It was near twilight, so visibility wasn't at it's best, and one of my friends was surprised at seeing that many deer. I remarked the deer weren't real, they were just ani-ma-tronic ones the locals put out to fool the fudgies who happened to drive by. For several moments Randy believed me until one of the deer bolted away.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 02:46 pm:

OH, DEER! (lol)

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 03:12 pm:

Doh, a deer! by Homer Simpson.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 03:18 pm:

CURLY: (reading from a reader) Oh, see the little deer. Has the deer a little doe?

LARRY: Yeah, 2 bucks! (Moe bops Larry's head)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 04:10 pm:

Hey, Thomas, where can I find that movie?;-)

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 04:49 pm:

Can't believe the deer haven't gone to their winter yards. Ours have. They travel to the deep forests for snow cover and to be able to run from their predators.

Thanks, Hollidays, interesting information. You've posted some 'neat' sites.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 05:40 pm:

Shirley: It's 1 of the 20 minute Three Stooges flicks entitled "Half Wits' Holiday," and it might even be on You Tube. BTW, this flick was remade when Joe Besser was 3rd Stooge, and was retitled, "Pies and Guys."

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 07:02 pm:

Sorta what I thought, Thomas. Would you believe I used to sit and watch those with my kids many moons ago. Lotsa slapstick but better than what some kids are watching nowadays, eh?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 08:07 pm:

Wasn't Joe the 5th Stooge? Moe, Larry, Curly & Schemp were the originals, then Joe took over when Curley had a massive stroke.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 08:12 pm:

I stand to be corrected, Bob told me Joe was the 4th Stooge, I can't count tonite, but Joe replaced Shemp when Shemp died.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 08:16 pm:

Shirley, my wife and I still enjoy watching the Three Stooges. She said that's one of the reasons she took a liking to me. Janie, there were actually 2 Joes during the Stooges' career. Shemp replaced Curly after the latter's stroke in 1946. When Shemp died in 1955, Joe Besser took his place, and when the Stooges went to making full length movies in 1959, Joe DiRita replaced Besser as 3rd Stooge.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 10:17 pm:

Deer won't necessarily go to "yards" for the winter as the earlier link suggests if there is ample food supply elsewhere. Furthermore, you really can't compare Keweenaw deer to the deer featured in that link, for those deer are in the Gatineau Hills near Ottawa, Ontario; they don't have the benefit of a large lake nearby. Most of the deer in the Keweenaw that can make it will gather near the shores of Lake Superior where there is less snow and warmer temps to ride out winter's worst.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 - 07:34 am:

Thomas...I share your enjoyment and humor of The 3 Stooges!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 - 12:46 pm:

Janie, I just checked your 'profile' once again to see what's there, and I found Brody and Brimley!! Which one is using the computer?;> So sweet!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 - 01:30 pm:

Brimley is surfing the web. I do love my Scottie boys! :)

By Joann (Packerbacker) on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 - 03:02 pm:

There is a site to watch bears. This bear Jewell is preparing to give bith with cams on her. She is younger sister of Lily who we followed last couple years. This is at the Bear Center in Ely.MN bear.org/livecam/jewel. I am also following 2 eagle nests on east coast. They are laying eggs now. Boy, not getting much done.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 - 03:17 pm:

Yeah, Janie, I thought that was Brimley...I remembered that Brody's coat is different.

Joann, a few years ago there was a cam atop a bldg. in Duluth (Allete, I think) trained on a falcon's nest, and I'd keep my eye on it every day, then one day the camera went on the blink before the egg(s) hatched.:(

By Just me (Jaby) on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 - 06:46 pm:

ohhhh- I just love the deer!!!
