I think it's safe to say that winter has arrived here in the Copper Country. Looking out my window here in Lake Linden, I'd say there's a good foot of snow on the ground and it all came in one day.... what a difference a day makes, right?

Liz Siivola was out and about in Calumet and made her way to the Swedetown ski trails for some photos and a bit of skiing as well. She said the trails weren't groomed yet, but definitely skiable anyway. When the snow covers the trees like this, it makes for a picture perfect post card scene. So, even though it means added time to our daily duties for snow removal, it is pretty to sit back and enjoy the view.

I personally find these pictures absolutely beautiful!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 08:42 am:

Beautiful yes, but cold! Funny (not 'ha-ha') how age changes one's view of snow.:>

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 08:48 am:

I find the photos absolutely sickening!! Sickening because I'm not there to enjoy it..... L

Actually they are quite beautiful. I always like the first snow of the year; so clean and white it almost looks like cotton on the trees.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 08:55 am:

I love the snow now just as much as I did as a kid, maybe even more now since I love snowmobiling.

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 09:04 am:

The first snows are simply stunning...but scary to drive in.....remember to slow down folks....the first snow removes a layer of oils off the blacktop and really makes for slippery driving...Be careful!

It looked yesterday (on Tech's web cams) like the Michigan Tech Trails were partially groomed, and I saw one guy out skiing on a trail yesterday.

I might add that Tech's trails are up on top of the ridge in Houghton, while most of the University is at the level of the Portage, in a valley, so to speak.

Very serene and quiet looking and like Jeremiah Johnson once said "Nothing wrong with quiet."

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 10:29 am:

WOW Liz, those are beautiful shots. Lucky you that you were able to be there. I love Swedetown. The skiing is always so spectacular there. Great quote Alex!

By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 11:40 am:

I'm jealous! All we got were flurries that didn't even have the courage to stick to the ground. Oh, for some courageous flakes to fall!
Great pictures, Liz.

Looks like Alex and Tom are familiar with one of my favorite movies.....hey pilgrim.....you fish poorly!;)

John Dee's weather graphics looks like more snow heading for the U.P. this weekend. In the words of Napoleon Dynamite, "Lucky".

By Therese (Therese) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 01:08 pm:

This poem was on Writers Almanac two
days ago. It is Falling Trees and Early
Snow, by Kenneth Rexrith

In the years to come they will say,
"They fell like the leaves
In the autumn of nineteen thirty-nine.
"November has come to the forest,
To the meadows where we picked the
cyclamen.
The year fades with the white frost
On the brown sedge in the hazy
meadows,
Where the deer tracks were black in the
morning.
Ice forms in the shadows;
Disheveled maples hang over the water;
Deep gold sunlight glistens on the
shrunken stream.
Somnolent trout move through pillars of
brown and gold.
The yellow maple leaves eddy above
them,
The glittering leaves of the cottonwood,
The olive, velvety alder leaves,
The scarlet dogwood leaves,
Most poignant of all.

In the afternoon thin blades of cloud
Move over the mountains;
The storm clouds follow them;
Fine rain falls without wind.
The forest is filled with wet resonant
silence.
When the rain pauses the clouds
Cling to the cliffs and the waterfalls.
In the evening the wind changes;
Snow falls in the sunset.
We stand in the snowy twilight
And watch the moon rise in a breach of
cloud.
Between the black pines lie narrow bands
of moonlight, Glimmering with floating
snow.
An owl cries in the sifting darkness.
The moon has a sheen like a glacier.

shirley...... yes, " jeremiah johnson " is in my top five all-time favorite movies, and the book entitled " the mountain man " by vardis fisher is a great read, and gives a much clearer insight into johnson's relationship with his surroundings, if you like the movie you'll love the book.

Beautiful!

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 03:09 pm:

Therese, beautiful poem. I can just picture it all.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 03:27 pm:

Thanks for the tip, Tom. I have the DVD of JJ and watch it often....matter of fact I can just about quote the whole dialogue.:)

Lovely, just lovely. I'm envious...I can't wait for this beautiful white
fluffy stuff down here in Illinois.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, November 18, 2011 - 11:21 pm:

Janie, just a point of view. I've always loved snow since I was a little girl. Still do but at my age it's nice looking out the window too. Think of this when you're in your 70's. Still love the feel of flakes landing on my face and tongue. And the soft silence of it coming down at nighttime.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, November 19, 2011 - 05:29 am:

Kay..I'm planning on still riding my snowmobile as far into my years that I can. The only thing that would prevent this would be my trusty snowmobile breaks down, but then a quick fix would be to replace it! My glass is half full. :)
