Robert Halonen was busy driving around the Keweenaw and snapped a few photos to share with us all. He starts out in Laurium, on Lake Linden Avenue, where the George Gipp monument is maintained. I'm embarrassed to say that I drive by this historic little park at least once a week, but have never stopped to check it out. If it wasn't for Robert's photo, I'd have never noticed the football image imbedded there with the bricks, either. Talk about being unaware of my surroundings, right? I'll have to remedy that in the near future, with a stop to check things out.

Robert's next stop was in downtown Eagle Harbor, just after making the curve on M-26. I'm sure there's a funny explanation for the phone up so high on the telephone pole, but I'll have to rely on someone out there in Pastyland, to help me out with that. Here again, I've never noticed this before, I wonder how long it's been there? It looks like a rotary dial, so it could have been there for awhile now.

The last two photos Robert snapped, are a follow-up from this past Friday, July 15th Pastycam, giving us a ground level view of the new stairway/lookout at Great Sand Bay. These new steps will sure make it a much easier way down and especially back up to the highway for folks. What a great way to enjoy the Bay even more.
Thanks for the mini tour, Robert!

I can NOT wait to get to Great Sand Bay next month to check this out. Since my son and his family are also going to be there, I think we may just make a day of it out there. I love relaxing there and at Big Traverse. Ya gotta love Lake Superior. Hopefully the weather is still nice and hot so the lake feels great!!

Does the second picture show a "pain phone". This week I spotted 2 pay phones still in use here in southeast Mich.

Is the pole phone high for snowmobilers to use with all the snow that piles UP in the U.P.?

Good observation J.T. Obviously, the installer was.
My guess...it was put there as a gag.

By Bob Williams (Wabbit) on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 - 11:09 am:

It think it is just like the old TV show "Green Acres". The phone is up on the pole because that is as long as the telephone wire was. LOL

Wonder what the sign beneath the phone says? Maybe..."NO long-distance calls!" ;>

Received an email from Mike B. with an explanation for the "Telephone Pole" and it goes like this...

Quote:

"Many years ago that corner was the Eagle Harbor (kids) hangout, (Unky's) rockshop had a pay phone, pop machine and benches. The pop machine and phone left, so we got (our) own phone. It has been up 3+ years."

Thanks for giving us the scoop, Mike!

So I guess the phone was installed on the pole in the winter, eh? <grin>

"Coach, if things ever get really tough, and the boys are up against it, you tell them to go out there and give it all they've got, and win one for The Gipper. I know I'll hear about it, and I'll be happy." (All good pics, today, 2.)

On the Gipper subject------The Gipper's is a very
nice and popular restaurant here in Green Bay.
There are some pics of the Gipper and a bit of a
narrative on the menu. Who ever started that
restaurant must have been a fan. Many years ago
while a student at Suomi College a younger cousin of his also attended that college. She was not particularly impressed by his fame it seemed to me.

Wow! All those times half sliding up and down that slope to get down to the beach! Now it's a nice easy walk! Kids today don't know how good they've got it! :-) I can't wait to get up there myself to see it!

By Robert - CO (Halork) on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 - 08:49 pm:

Thanks for the comments everyone! I had to stop at the Gipp Memorial to check it out. Many of the paving bricks are engraved with the names of people who (I believe) contributed to the memorial. Noticed Ronald Reagan and Regis Philbin, among many others. I wouldn't have noticed the phone, but caught it as I was going to take a picture of the Agate shop... first thing I thought of was Green Acres, too! :-)

I remember going to the George Gipp memorial with my dad when I was in junior high school. There's a picture somewhere!

The stairs are awesome! But don't slide your hand along the rail, just hold it on and off as you go (slivers). The parking improvements are excellent too.
