This completes a set of ice fishing memories we started back in 2005, by legendary photographer Bert DeVriendt. I've been meaning to post this the past few winters, but somehow was always sidetracked with other winter-time distractions. There is such a continuous flow of compelling scenes - landscapes, people, places and events - that runs through every season here in the U.P. I'm glad that Bert developed his skills with color print techniques relatively early, in the photo-revolution that has continued to this day. For every single color picture captured back in those days, there must be millions generated today, with the current flood of digital cameras, cell phones, and webcams.

Thanks again to Brian Rendel for his part in preserving and sharing these wonderful scenes of a simpler time.

Have a good week :o)

His little helper was a big help.

Since W.W.II was going on in 1943, it's nice 2 c some semblances of normalcy during that time.

Nice cameo and great photos, especially the summer scenes. That is just the medicine I needed on this January 30th.
Thanks, Dr. Hopper!

my dad used to go ice fishing on Keweenaw Bay quite a bit.
They go stuck on an ice flow one evening though, and had some scary moments.
They had heard popping earlier, and when they tried to go back to shore, in the dark, they realized they were looking ar water in front of them...had to walk a long ways to find solid again. they were lucky.

I like the boots on the kalastajan poika - they sure
look like classic Sorels.

Here is a link to an interesting ice fishing story not soon to be forgotten by those involved. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/189752/
The older gentleman involved in this incident was interviewed this past Friday by a radio station in Minneapolis. Glad they had a happy ending to their story.

Both sets of boots look like they might be L.L. Bean boots.

Oh how I love the days of simplicity…no electronic/battery powered anything! The boots are great, if these are the ones with the removable felt liners...does anyone know who sells these anymore?

Bert had the eye for a pic.

Bert was not only an excellent photographer but he was the nicest and most pleasant person that you would ever want to meet.

Mike, Sorel makes boots with removable liners.
