We often hear of the many moods of Lake Superior and today, Michael Musiel shows us one of her more frigid looks. With the waves splashing and the temperatures freezing, it doesn't take long for a snowy and icy coating to cover the shoreline rocks. To many people it's not a time they'd choose to be on the shores of Gitche Gumee, but even in this cold and snowy mood, she's still a thing of beauty to behold. Perhaps it's the forces of nature this Lake holds within it's waters that fascinate us so, and keep us coming back for more and more of her.

Nice pictures today. I have many pictures of Lake Superior's "blue ice" shorelines from our snowmobile vacations. So pretty!

Craaazy morning in SE Michigan. Only a few inches of snow, but enough to make roads/morning traffic, a mess.
Do you have any photos of UP palm trees and balmy breezes? I sure would appreciate it right now :)

Probably not many of our visitors are aware of Mike Musiel's role with Pasty.NET. Over the years Mike has been our wind and solar power expert, helping bring you the Pasty Cam every day by keeping the relay powered up on the top of Brockway. Here's a shot from Mike's home page, showing the gift shop, where the wind generator is really humming this morning.

Brockway

I took my first winter trip to the Keweenaw last February, and the lake looked just like this driving down M26. It was so beautiful, I didn't even feel the cold getting out to take pictures. What a great time we had.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 08:41 am:

I have been up there to Mike's, shop UP on Brockway many times. The best time up there was during a lake effect snowstorm....riding the storm out by snowmobiles, yeeehawwww!

Fantastic winter photo of The Big Lake. I hope people are voting for the roof of our Big Theater in Calumet. http://www.refresheverything.com/saveabeautiful110yroldtheatre

It's rated no. 19 at this time. I don't imagine all the snow is helping the state of that roof!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 09:56 am:

I know that UP there all of you are partial to the BIG Lake but having lived around Lake Michigan I can attest to having seen it look very much like that photo. I guess a scene like this has a lot to do with them being called the GREAT Lakes, eh? :)

By ILMHitCC (Ilmhitcc) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 10:34 am:

Janie, that may be Mike's photo and his wind power handy-work, but that is not Mike's shop. That privilege would go to an old Copper Harbor resident who's had this property in their family for generations.

Sure do love Ol' Superior's moods! Thanks!

Beautiful and fascinating! Thanks for sharing.

The Calumet Theatre roof project is stuck on #19 at the Pepsi Refresh website!

http://www.refresheverything.com/saveabeautiful110yroldtheatre

We need more voters. You can vote twice if you use the website and also vote on your cell phone. Send a text message 104720 to the number 73774.

I would hate to see the Theatre close because we didn't get enough voters.

Great Photo today!

Mike's shop was a figure of speech...where his power equipment is at.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 02:48 pm:

Hi
I looked at that scene and thought "hypothermia". Humidity always seems to add to the chill.

Alex, although I'm sure we don't have as many inches of snow as the U.P., I think "only a few inches" as a description of our snow conditions here in SE Michigan doesn't do to it justice. Because of the blowing snow, and it being too cold for salt to work, the road crews weren't able to get us to bare pavement. (I'm sure there were budget issues too).

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 02:57 pm:

Nothing like a cold snowy blast to bring out the "Shovel Ready" jobs!

3 hours behind my Kauffman (Ironwood) official Yooper Scooper in the last two days. who needs running, skiing, or snowshoeing for exercise when you have a yooper scooper!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 03:11 pm:

Beautiful Wintery scene!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 07:21 pm:

LOL, Rowdy! BTW, does "Sandy" like to play in the snow? ;D

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 07:56 pm:

The most beautiful snowmobile ride I ever took was on the night of a full moon, going up to the top of Brockway Mountain. WOW.....absolutely breathtaking!

But ya gotta go there in the other seasons too, and stop at the little shop up there. Very cool stop. It's a must.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 08:57 pm:

I know what we're having here in NW Illinlois is miniscule to the UP's storms. But daughter Jane couldn't get to my rehab facility yesterday because of the horrible roads drifting and blowing. But I'm SO estatic to be home after almost 3 months of hospitals and rehabs I threatened to come home even if by dog sled!So now I'll be back online again. And my darling cat is sticking to me like a thisle on a pair of jeans.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Monday, December 13, 2010 - 10:51 pm:

Kay, Im concerned, can I help?
