Taana Kalliainen was out kayaking with her sister Tracie recently, as they explored around the South Entry Lighthouse and the White City sandstone cliffs. Those steep walls of sandstone look so much bigger when you're sitting right on top the water in a kayak, rather than when you view them from on land, looking down at them. That's where Dennis Kemper stood on dry land to snap his bottom two shots and those very same cliffs don't look quite as big from that distance and perspective. I really like the last shot from Dennis, with the water so clear that you can plainly see the sandstone beneath Superior. Keweenaw has so much beautiful nature for us to behold.

Fantastic pictures. The last picture almost looks like a sunken ship in the bottom of the water.

Breathtaking pictures today!

There is so much beauty in the Keweenaw, and Lake Superior...and there's alot of secrets too...Lots of hidden stuff that you can find...Just think of the feet that have walked the ground you are walking now! Esp around Superior!

I thought the same thing about a ship wreck!

Looks like a lot of fun ~ great shots to start the day.

Those who have a 3-day weekend, enjoy! And everyone be safe on the roads ~

Where is White City in relation to the South Entry?

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Friday, September 3, 2010 - 01:22 pm:

AJ white city is right at the south entry, from the beach you can walk out on the break wall to the south entry light.

Time to start savoring these pictures..the Farmers Almanac is saying a lot of cold and white stuff for the north and midwest. Have a great and safe weekend!

Isn't there a White City out toward Bessemer?

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, September 3, 2010 - 03:47 pm:

AJ - WI (Ajinwi):
"Isn't there a White City out toward Bessemer?"

Well, kinda; it's down by the lower end of Lake Gogebic, on the east side of the lake. About 4¾ miles north of US-2 via Stage Coach Road.

More info may be found in Hunt's Guide to MICHIGAN'S UPPER PENINSULA: Lake Gogebic's East Shore Road.

The Ancient Artifact Preservation Society is having their annual Conference in Marquette this month:

You would be AMAZED at the stuff found on Superior's shores in the Keweenaw! Check out their website.

A couple of years ago, my brother found a very interesting rock up someplace near Highrock Bay.

There's some way cool markings on that thing...and he showed it at the conference last year. There have been petroglyphs found up there, and many other wonderful finds! AMAZING....

And by the way, speaking of little brother, it's his birthday today! So, if you get the chance, give Charley MacIntosh a holler and tell him HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUDE! :D Thanks!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, September 3, 2010 - 05:27 pm:

All fantastic photos but I have to say my favorite is the "Sandstone and Flora". So many beautiful and interesting elements there....like the spreading tree roots for instance. Love the different colors!

By RCW (Rcw) on Friday, September 3, 2010 - 07:47 pm:

Aj. Actually White city is not at the Breakwall. About 1/4 mile into the channel on the right is Bay that is the original WHITE CITY. They had pavilions there in the late 1800 to early 1900s. Even had excursion boat's run down there on weekend from Ripley and Hancock. I ve got a photo smewhere of my Grandfather camping there the day WW1 ended

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, September 3, 2010 - 10:11 pm:

Hope all the people camping at Lake Linden are O.K. from all this wind....

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Saturday, September 4, 2010 - 01:02 am:

Two people had to be rescues when their sailboat overturned in Lake Superior in Marquette today. Now why on earth would someone want to go out there on such a nasty windy day just blows my mind.

By Donna (Donna) on Saturday, September 4, 2010 - 06:06 am:

They kept announcing on the radio here in Baraga, "GALE FORCE WINDS...STAY OFF THE LAKE."

That's just asking for trouble.
