Peter Chiomenti spotted what's known as the elusive Lake Superior Sand Shark, on the beach at Calumet Waterworks Park. This type of shark is a welcome sighting at any beach, unlike the ocean going shark variety. Peter said the artist is unknown, but whomever left this artistic display did a good job, even down to the sharp white teeth.

If it's been awhile since you took a drive out to the Waterworks Park, then it's time to remedy that and set your compass (or GPS now-a-days) on heading that way, about 4 miles outside of Calumet. It's a great sandy, Superior shoreline and the park boasts of pavilions, picnic grounds, fire pits, horseshoe pits, and even a playground. Looks like nice weather for an outing, although on this day in history we've had some rough ones.

OMG...a shark in the park? :D

Calumet Waterworks Park (AKA...Bucky's) has become quite the beautiful little stop to make! Back "in the day"...Bucky's was always a stop!

Calumet waterworks has many memories for anyone who has lived in the Copper Country. As a teenager, I went there with the special guy in my life; I know any of you who were teenagers in the 60’s also know the place well. It was my oldest son and his neighborhood buddies favorite place to ride their bicycles in the summer-sometimes they were riding with fishing poles in hand. If Calumet waterworks beach could talk, what a tale you would hear! Have a great day everyone!

Please vote for the Copper Country Humane Society. They could really use the money. Thank you

Please vote for Marquette or Ontonagon since Copper Country won $10,000 in the last challenge. Thank you.

This is from the challenge website:

Winners of the Weekly prizes will be announced weekly on The Animal Rescue Site and in The Animal Rescue Site newsletter emails. No organization may win more than one Weekly Prize. Organizations may win up to three (3) prizes total. The Grand, Second, and Third Prize winners must be separate organizations (no organization can win more than one of the three prizes for the most votes). Organizations receiving the Grand, Second, and Third Prizes are ineligible for Regional Prizes (For example, if the Grand Prize Winner is located in California, the State Prize will go to the organization in that state with the highest vote total after the Grand Prize Winner). Grand Prize winners from prior Shelter+ Challenges during the calendar year are not eligible for the Grand, Second, or Third Prizes, or other top prizes during subsequent Shelter+ Challenges during that calendar year, but remain eligible for all other prizes including the Weekly and Regional prizes.

I took my kids to the Calumet Waterworks Park when they were 5 and 9. A storm was brewing on Lake Superior and the waves were crashing into the shore. The kids put on their life jackets and had a blast! They laughed so hard they could not stand up and so did I. Hindsight. Now that I'm older and I hope much wiser, I would not let them swim in that kind of surf. I guess a large item could have been thrown up on shore? or a under current? My Mom, who grew up in the UP has a fear of Lake Superior, or should I say great respect. I guess she must have seen what Lake Superior is capable of?

Don't forget the Delta County Aninal Shelter in Escanaba

By Judi CC WI (Joyfulnoise) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 11:59 am:

Vote for Marquette Cty animals, PLEASE

CCHS would not have won if many of us had not
switched our votes over to them when they needed
the extra support.

By Uncle Chuck at Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 01:35 pm:

Phil, I don't think CCHS is elgible to win again so soon.

By AJ - WI (Ajinwi) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 02:41 pm:

I voted for Marquette County Humane Society.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 02:58 pm:

Good beach photos.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 05:17 pm:

Ok guys (and gals)..... first off; I believe CCHS cannot win this round of the Animal Rescue challenge, so that's out of the question!!

Second; I believe that before there is an all-out war on the PastyCam about which shelter to vote for or who has the best shelter or who deserves it more, why don't we all agree to vote for one shelter and stick with it. Or, as we all did with CCHS, wait until a front-runner from the UP emerges that has a realistic shot at winning the $10,000 and put all our effort into voting for that shelter.

Just an idea......

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 05:18 pm:

Oh and BTW...... nice photos today!! J

Hi Davey

By Yooperguide (Huntandfish) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 05:25 pm:

No war here Capt. We're all just trying to save the animals. BTW, are you affiliated with Pasty Cam?

Here's who I hope you all vote for;

If you don't and pick another shelter---you are still saving our best friends. Thank you.

When my mom was growing up in Calumet, her parents had a cabin at Tamrack Waterworks and my mom said she use to ride her bike out there and have the best time of her life. I recently met a childhood friend of my moms and her family had a cabin at Calumet Waterworks and she told me her and my mom use to walk through the woods between the two places. It was a pure delight to meet her and listen to stories of her and my mom growing up and how she helped out in my grandparents restaurant in Calumet. I also loved hearing stories of my grandpa, who I simply adored. It was a delight to meet her.

The water works was the blue building at the bottem of the hill, of course it is no longer there. It was fun riding our bikes as you could coast all the way down, think I hit 50 mph. The down side it was up hill all the way back. Have fond memories of the cook outs with my parents back in the 60's.

By a m hill (Lvcamnotes) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 06:05 pm:

heh heh heh. sand shark for sure.

btw. i have not seen this on pasty posts.
animal shelter voting:
if one goes to http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com
there is a link near the top of the page of
'click to give free food and care'.
it is no cost to you and sponsors pay.
after clicking (a good thing), the next page
has a link near the top to go vote for your
favorite shelter.

By a m hill (Lvcamnotes) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 06:22 pm:

capt. paul, i agree with your thoughts about
animal shelter voting. if one looks
at the vote summaries of ohio, virtually
the whole state is voting for a single
humane society. they look to be unbeatable.
anyway, another title may not come the the up
unless organization like that in ohio is
practiced.

Folks,
At the bottom of each Pasty Cam page it reads:

"Each day the Pasty Cam has 2 areas to post messages:
Cam Notes - comments related to today's picture and discussion
What'sUP - other topics, conversation and announcements
*** Please use the appropriate forum ***"

How about we honor the request, eh? We could all weigh in about our favorite cause, point of argument, etc. - but why make Pasty Cam like the far too many sites that get all tangled up in that kind of mess? I don't know about you but I appreciate Charlie and the gang for providing us with this pleasant little corner of the Internet.

And please no bad feelings toward me for saying this - we have three rescued dogs at our house. They might say: "Nuff, ruff, ruff." ;-)
