Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 07:18 am:

When I spotted the Marquette Lighthouse and the rough waters in today's top photo from Aladino Mandoli, I thought to myself, "...there just has to be more from that day." So an email or two later, I had the other three photos directly from Dino, along with this note:

"It was quite windy the other night and following morning, so I figured I'd check it out. I wasn't alone either. Lots of college kids and others were oohing and awwing at the waves. It's quite an impressive lake...would like to be out on one of the ore boats when it's this windy to see what the lake is really like! Enjoy!"
I'm in total agreement with part of Dino's statement... Lake Superior IS quite impressive. It is definitely a force to be reckoned with, especially if you're out in her open waters during a storm. That's where I'm in disagreement with Dino... there's NO WAY I'd like to be out on the ore boats or any boat for that matter, when Superior decides to toss and turn with the winds. I'll keep both feet planted on the shores, at a time like that, thank you.

Wow, great shots.

Art gallery quality...any one of these photos could be a painting hanging in a living room. Thanks for making my morning.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 07:56 am:

So looking forward to feasting my eyes on the Big Lake! I have been gone to long, & now I have the time to get back home & stay as long as I like. Maybe forever, coming home to the Bay in the month of May, oh happy day's, what more can I say?

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 07:58 am:

That Mary is a task-master, indeed. If she wants more...she's getting more, hey Dino? :D

GREAT pics!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 08:07 am:

Those are awesome photos, Dino, thank you. They look like paintings, I agree with Alex on that.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 08:12 am:

Holy smokes!! Those are quite the impressive pictures! And I'm definitely with Mary. I love the lake FROM SHORE!!!

Thanks for the totally awesome pictures!

These do look like paintings, I agree. They're amazing!

By Deb L. (Lakegirl) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 08:19 am:

I agree with Alex. Aladino, your pictures capture the "attidude" of the lake perfectly. It was nice start to my day. I just love the Big Lake. Have a great weekend everyone!!!!

Alex...your comment on gallery quality pics is right on the money!

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 08:41 am:

Hi
The bottom picture, catching the wave as it curled, is a great shot. But I agree they are all beautiful...and stir up longings to visit a Great Lakes shoreline.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 08:50 am:

Look at that curl on number three! Bet Aladino was waiting for that moment and happy to get it!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 08:56 am:

Speaking of a painting of that lighthouse. Several years ago when I was still able to paint, I did a 25"x30" 'mural-type' painting of the Marquette Light on one wall of our enclosed stairway. I painted it as a 'window' looking out over the Lighthouse.....thus giving some 'life' to an otherwise dark area.

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 09:49 am:

I rode on the "Cason J. Callaway" in weather rough enough to send 4 foot waves down the deck crashing into the aft cabin structure. It isn't fun. The waves floated a life-ring out of its holder on the wall and pulled he pin on the flare attached. It lay burning on the deck until exhausted. There were three humps from waves hitting the bow moving down the deck at any one time and twists in the structure that showed in the alignment of the deck lights, like wriggles in a snake's body. You could hear the hull working in the fore-aft passages on either side atop the ballast tanks. The chances of launching a lifeboat are just above zip. I'll keep my old feet on the ground, thank you, or maybe in my canoe out fishing in 200 feet of Superior's water. :D

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 10:18 am:

This morning's enteries of pics and words are the best I can remember! Notroll made me feel almost like I could feel the power of lake and ship both! And Dino's pictures are stunning! Thank you both ( and Mary for presenting them.) The third will be my background for a long time.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 10:22 am:

Opps....the fourth picture is background now.

By Ryan James Byykkonen (Rbyykkonen) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 10:54 am:

Great Pics Dino

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 10:59 am:

Kathyl...the fourth photo is pretty cool, capturing the curl of that wave. I believe surfers call that the pipeline. Totally gnarly, dudes and dudetts.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 11:56 am:

Hi
Notroll, I have a book called Great lakes Shipwrecks and Survivals, and you made me think of a couple of points from that book. One,it was noted that the freighters are built to be flexible and hump in the way you described...though I imagine it would be disconcerting to be riding on a boat doing that. As a sidebar, the book also described wrecks caused by the use of steel that became brittle at cold tempratures, causing the hull to break instead of flex.

The other thing is a poem from the book, that seems to reflect your view:
"An' suppose she blow lak a hurricane
An' suppose she blow some more;
You can't get drowned on Lac Ontair
So long you stay on shore"

By Joy Brewer (Joy) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 12:02 pm:

Dino, thank you for the photos! I have to admit that I am now really homesick for the UP and Lake Superior. Hopefully some day I can live close by Lake Superior, again.

Have a great weekend everyone!

By RCW (Rcw) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 01:35 pm:

I had the pleasure of experiencing those humps and twists in my first days on the lakes, scary the first time for sure!!!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, April 23, 2010 - 02:55 pm:

I love the pics today.... Dino great job!

By Barbara Whiteside (Bobbeo60) on Saturday, April 24, 2010 - 07:38 am:

the last shot looks like Pirates Cove at Presque Isle Park/Marquette....on top of the Black Rocks where the kids like to take a jump into the lake........nothing like standing on the rocks with one of those big rollers coming right at you with that shade of green......frightening.

By Barry Seymour (Bimplebean) on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - 11:38 am:

I clicked on the link for Mr. Mandoli but could not
find these pictures in his photos. Where are they?

Mary says: Mr. Mandoli made them available to me without uploading them to his Guest Gallery Album, so they aren't in there. Sorry for any confusion.
