Photos from MTU Archives

Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 07:59 am:

Some weeks back, when we kicked off coverage of The Shelter Challenge, we featured the Nara Chalet and Interpretive Center, a gift to the community from Dr. Bob and Ruth Nara. This building was the previous animal shelter, not far from the new home of the Copper Country Humane Society. Robert had acquired this property from his brother John Nara, whose veterinarian practice was housed there for many years. Back in the 50's, the receptionist and guardian at Dr.John's office was Freckles - a purebred St. Bernard. Today's fun photo is a Shoebox Memory courtesy of the MTU Archives, from a story in the Mining Gazette over 50 years ago.

The front page story in yesterday's Gazette was about Copper Country Humane Society's lead in The Shelter Challenge, which happens to conclude TODAY. You have until midnight tonight Pacific Time to cast your last vote for CCHS, to keep them in first place to receive the $10,000 grant. Here's the official link:

The winner will be announced on Wednesday!

Have a good week :o)

Barks, tails wagging, purring...these animals all thank you all so much!!

What hearts! Thanks everyone! Blessings~!

It appears the Animal Rescue Site has not updated the vote count from yesterday, because the numbers are the same as the day before. Or - since they are percentages - perhaps the Copper Country folks and the Dennison Iowa folks all voted equally as hard. We better all pitch in today, because it's down to the wire.

By Mike (Upboundeh) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 08:15 am:

My votes in...Go CCHS! That is one good size dog.

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 08:40 am:

Voted, too. We're flatlined until tomorrow when I can get the last data and interpolate where we would be today in the chart. Until then this is the visual:

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 09:22 am:

Good morning! My vote is in. How would you like to buy the dog food for Freckles??? We have a 8 months old 55# English Springer pup and he eats quite a lot.

By Gary Hookway (Ghookway) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 09:29 am:

G'mornin' all, my vote is in too....Good Luck !

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 10:17 am:

Paul...Springers are wonderful dogs! However when ours, (Gus) reached his 2nd birthday he weighed in at 75lbs! And maintained that weight all his life, all dog, no fat. Gus lived to be 16 yrs. old. Great, great dogs!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 10:39 am:

ARGGHHHH!! I've tried 5 times to vote this morning and I keep getting the message that the 'page has expired'!! I'm not giving up, will try again later. Have to wonder if it's my MSN connection...that service is a 'sorry lot'!
I LOVE 'Freckles'!:)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 10:56 am:

Good morning! I voted again! WOW! It is close. Can you believe that a small area like the Copper Country is winning? That's amazing! Thank you pasty.com!!!!

By FJL (Langoman) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 11:51 am:

Isn't CUJO a St. Bernard?????????

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 12:09 pm:

Janie T.: You are absolutely right; today's photo brought tears to my eyes. It's been 5 months now since we lost our beloved St. Bernard [Lucy], I will never forget her. She was only 7 yrs. old and 110 lbs. not huge like the one in the photo. Certainly the most loving and affectionate dog I have ever known. The neighbor down the street recently got a St. Bernard from the shelter, she looks like she could be Lucy's twin.

By Margaret M. Edwards (Pedwards) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 12:46 pm:

When I voted today the picture I had to identify was of the yellow lab with the ball in his mouth. I tried to enter "Marley" but had to settle for DOG. GO CCHS!!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 01:05 pm:

WHEW!!! Finally got through. I had to identify an elephant.:) God bless CCHS and all the good they do for our furry/hairy friends!:)

By Deb L. (Lakegirl) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 01:13 pm:

I voted and good luck!!!! It was nice to be able to help out!! PS. Cujo was a St. Bernard--scary movie!!!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 03:18 pm:

Well, what a surprise to see a picture of my second cousin John "Jack" Nara featured today! What a flashback! Just as I remember him from the late '50s/early '60s. Jack was a purty big fella, and as you can see from the picture, Freckles was likewise! {smile}

We went for a ride and one place was waterworks and as we were leaving the park Bill spotted something in the tree above the beach. It was an eagle. Still had all of it's brown feathers with some white down type feathers under it's chest area. Sure was a big one. Just sat there the whole time we were there and pointing it out to other people as they got out to look at the water. A lady went down on the beach with a dog and that caught its attention but did not leave the tree.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 03:30 pm:

What a big dog!

By Yooperguide (Huntandfish) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 04:42 pm:

Wow FRNash, you do know "Jack"! :)

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, April 18, 2010 - 04:43 pm:

Cujo was indeed a St.Bernard. that turned mad due to being infected by rabies.

Drat, they changed their site, no more graphs as of 0330! Guess we have to wait for the 21st. All my relatives and friends will be anxiously awaiting results.
