Good morning everyone. It's a beautiful day!

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 11:31 pm:

E. Neil Harri sent me today's photos with the following message:

This is Tom Hyrkas' new plane. It is a 1947 Piper Super Cruiser. He just flew it in from near Milwaukee with his instructor, Joe Masini. These planes get rebuilt through the years and hold their market value. It is a classic trail dragger which can be put on skis and large tundra tires for landing in unimproved areas.

This plane is as old as Houghton county airport itself. Tom is a just a checkride away from being our newest pilot and is building a landing strip in Trap Rock valley. He is also one of our County deputies at airport. Tom plans to do some aerial photography after he gets the flying part down pat.
Neil also told me that their nickname for Tom is, "The Flying Hyrkas." If you're thinking that all this sounds a little familiar, that's because we featured Tom's first solo flight as a student pilot in the Civil Air Patrol, back on September 29, 2009. In six months he went from his first solo flight, to the proud new owner of his own plane. Way to go, Tom!

E. Neil, The FAA says 1955 for N3297M. What do you think?

I've ridden on a single engine airplane, and I find it more enjoyable than a commercial airline.

Mighty fine looking craft. I'm sure we'll be seeing that one "Fly Fishing". Missed the cam yesterday, but glad you're back and you didn't miss a beat, so to speak. Have a great day everyone!!!

Those were only made for 2 years, either '46 and '47 or '47 and '48.

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Saturday, April 3, 2010 - 07:58 am:

Tangobravo, The airworthiness cert says 1955. It may
have been ground looped, as most were in their
lifespans, and then the FAA recertified after
rebuild in 1955.
