What a treat today, we get to view Mount Bohemia Ski Hill from the ground, the top AND from the air...all without risk to life or limb. The top two photos come to us from Philip Odum, first from the bottom of the hill, near the restroom Yurt, with a nice view up toward the top. Then Philip's second photo, taken right from the top looking down on the parking lot, where you can just see the roof of a Yurt at the very bottom of the hill. That shot gives you a good idea of just how steep these runs really are.

Today's last photo from E. Neil Harri pulls it all together, showing the face of Mt. Bohemia with several runs, the Yurt Village at the bottom and the parking area, too. It actually looks like it would be a lot of fun skiing down those slopes, but I think it's something I should have started when I was just a kid. I'll play it safe and stick to my snowshoes and cross country skis, while dreaming about the rest through the eyes of Philip and Neil. Good job guys!

nice pictures, i wish i could get up there and take a look around!

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 09:30 am:

So what's a Yurt?

By Laure (O2bindaup) on Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 09:56 am:

The word yurt is originally from a Turkic word referring to the imprint left in the ground by a moved yurt, and by extension, sometimes a person's homeland, kinsmen, or feudal appanage.. The term came to be used in reference to the physical tent-like dwellings only in other languages. In modern Turkish the word "yurt" is used as the synonym of homeland. In Russian the structure is called "yurta" (юрта), whence the word came into English.

(Thanks to Google! )

I know nothing of skiing at all but I have to ask, is there no lift there? If there is, you sure can't see it in the pics. Must be a long haul back up that hill!

Oops, my bad. I DO see the lift now, in that first pic. Geez...what was I looking at? Actually, I was looking at the last pic, where you really CAN'T see it! LOL

As to Laure (O2bindaup)'s post:
In case you were curious about some of the strange symbols (юрта) in that message, here's a "translation":

Quote:

And in case you didn't notice, that word wasn't "appendage", but (click → )"appanage.

Kay, I'll keep it simple. The Yurts are those round shelters. Its pretty there but rest easy all I will stay away from the slopes so you are all safe.

Hi
It's sure a more impressive ski hill than we have downstate, especially down here in SE Michigan. Like Mary, I do cross-country skiing rather than downhill. I can successfully give commands to my legs skiing uphill, on the flat or on mild to moderate downhill slopes but if I get going too fast downhill my legs start skittering all over. Yes, I know about "bend ze knees", but there's still evidently a flaw in my brain circuts. Kudos to those of you with the skills to enjoy it,and I'll enjoy watching the downhill skiiers in the upcoming winter Olympics.

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 12:31 pm:

Great views from on the hill today. Has been 50 years since I shushed down the slopes at Mt Ripley with very little stopping ability. I remember the quote by Willie Mays, "I don't do any sport where they have an ambulance at the bottom of the hill."

By Perry L. Ghering (Imshepsfriend) on Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 12:36 pm:

This is a great place to ski!!! Rough and rugged terrain most of the good stuff you cannot see in the pictures. When the snow is fresh and deep this can rival a trip to the western states and its close to home.

Great Pictures, will be U.P. the week of the 18th "working" at MGH and all the affiliates, looking forward to it.

By Maija Fleming (Seattlemaija) on Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 02:23 pm:

Eddyfitz, I love that quote too. Willie may have said it at some time, but the late, great humorist Erma Bombeck said it first... and I agree with them.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 02:34 pm:

Beautiful. Of course, Keweenaw Country is.

By osceola brulla (Sonofbrulla) on Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 06:37 pm:

FRNash/PHX,AZ

Thank you for the clarification! I didn't even notice that!

By Laure (O2bindaup) on Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 06:50 pm:

And I was in PHX a week ago tomorrow!.. Temp there was 70, when I got to MSP.... it was ZERO. :@

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 09:44 pm:

Thanks to all, for answers, simple and detailed. Guess what I wanted to know...is there cocoa or potties or benches etc inside. Just wondering. Btw we're getting yooper-like snow here in NW Illinois today. It's beautiful, of course, from inside looking out. Have many good memories of skating, tobbagoing and snowmobiling in my younger days.

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Friday, January 8, 2010 - 09:20 am:

Love these pics. The second one of the winter wonderland from the top is especially breathtaking. It's been at least 10 years since I've skiied -- all in the western U.P. (Indianhead, Powderhorn, Blackjack). Maybe someday I can try Mt. Bohemia. Thanks for sharing the pics!
