Another month has come and gone, along with another season, too. Here at Pasty Central, it's our month end tradition to pause and remember those of our friends and loved ones that have passed on before us. This month we recall the following folks:

Lawrence "Larry" DeRoche
Mary Ethier
Timothy Jewell
Brian Kentala
Makayla Walker
Servicemen and women who have given their all

If you have someone you'd like to remember, feel free to list their names here below. A special thank you to Robert C. Wetton, for the beautiful sunset photo to reflect upon today.

In memory of "Big Louie" Moilanen, who died in September 1913.

Also, in memory of my dog Trooper, who died Sept. 26 because of a spinal disease.
The following shows a black-and-white photo on the opening page of a dog that looks a lot like Trooper, but Trooper had more white on his left front leg:

Missing my Mom and Dad, June and Bob Houle... Happy Birthday Mom, today you would have been 91. Claire June turned 2 on Monday on the first anniversary of Dads death. We celebrated her day with happy memories of you Dad.
P.S. I am engaged to be married to a wonderful man, Andy Van Houzen. He proposed when I woke up from my chemo 'coctail' last week. We met after my breast cancer diagnosis, what a wonderful ride this journey is.
Cancer doesn't change who you are, it confirms who you are... (by Shelly Lewis)

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 01:18 pm:

Remembering Kurt Holtfreter, a former German POW.

He worked in the lumber camps over by AuTrain before being moved to California, where my Dad was stationed after he recovered from battle wounds in Germany. They met and became good friends and wrote back & forth for years after the war. My Dad sent him shoes & work clothes he couldn't get in Germany, and even sugar & coffee for Kurt's wedding reception. After my Dad passed away i wrote to Kurt and we became friends too.

Rest in peace, Kurt.

By Robbi Shaffer (Rls208) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 01:58 pm:

Remembering Kenneth L. Shaffer who passed away 12 years ago on September 30th after a hard fought battle with Alzheimer's.

By Mel, MN (Mehollop) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 02:11 pm:

Jbuck - my grandfather befriended a number of German POW's as well. He was stationed on a hospital ship at the end of WWII, charged with taking POW's back to Germany, and bringing injured US GI's home. Grandpa became good friends with one man in particular - both being artists, and they traded paintings back and forth for a number of years. He had great things to say about the Germans in the letters he would write home.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 03:03 pm:

Lori, Congratulations to you. I hope you'll be so happy. And you're right, cancer isn't always the end. It's sometimes the beginning. Best of luck!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 05:29 pm:

In addition to Trooper, I want to remember my Uncle Justin Way, who went to be with God on Sept. 16, 1995.

By Barry Seymour (Bimplebean) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 06:33 pm:

I'm thinking of my buddy Bill, Willis P. Tarpley, a.k.a. 'Tarp' or 'T.A. Rapley,' who was taken by cancer last month. His memorial service was this month.

Went to college with him. A h**l of a man. My best friend. I'm going to miss him a lot.

I put together an audio tribute of him -- if any of you knew Bill and are interested it's at http://www.barryseymour.com/bill.htm

By Morning Glory (Lucylu) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 07:25 pm:

Remembering my daddy, Paul Tourville, born and raised in the
copper country. He was an awesome DAD and was a friend to
many. He was born September 18, 1938 and died March 4, 1987
at the young age of 54. He fought for our great country in the
Korean War and retired from GM. I miss you Daddy but I know
you prayed and asked Jesus into your heart so I will see you
again in heaven.

By DEAN SCHWARTZ SR. (Lulu) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 07:50 pm:

Missing my MOM Dolores A. (Kowakski) Schwartz who passed 9-3-1978. Her love and un-ending love for life will always be remembered by all who she touched in so many way's. She was the Mom that all wish they had. She could drive anything, I recall her driving up to our house on E. Forest in Detroit in a Army Tank she was taking to the rail-road yard to be shipped out. Also in memory of my Daughter-in-law's Father Raul Alaniz who passed on the 18th of this month.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 08:43 pm:

Mel,

That's interesting - i wonder if Kurt and the others my Dad befriended were on one of those ships! Kurt said it took him nearly a year to get back to Germany. He traveled across America. Then he went to England and stayed there several months and maybe another stop or two before he got home. He always told his friends how well he was treated in America.

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 10:00 pm:

At the end of each month when we think about and discuss "the end" I worry. Not about myself, for if there is a life hereafter being in the presents of God will make every other consideration unimportant. If there isn't a hereafter then who cares about anything. What worries me now is leaving my beloved 2 pets. I hope they die first so it's me that has to mourn, not them.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 10:37 pm:

Dickingrayling...I hope you get what you wish. It is so hard isn't it? Pets are so unjudgemental, so loving.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 11:26 pm:

I received the following note and photo a short time ago, from Joe Kirkish:

Mary, I'm touched by the photo & all the messages that followed. If you need one more tribute to the dead, here's a single rose to be laid at their feet. - Joe

Thanks, Joe. Nice touch!

I sure do miss my mom and two brothers, but I DO know I will be seeing them again.

I LOVE yellow roses.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Thursday, October 1, 2009 - 04:36 am:

Beautiful rose.

By Steve (Chevysac) on Thursday, October 1, 2009 - 08:36 am:

While this is a little late to add for the month, I find a picture of Bootjack quite appropriate for Norman "Boots" Kukuk. A WWII Navy flyer, a noted Marquette Hockey Player, a great advocate of Safe Boating with all his years in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. A good family friend and a genuine nice guy. He passed away just a few days ago at the age of 90, a few days short of 91. Smooth waters Boots!

By Lori Houle (Runnerlori) on Thursday, October 1, 2009 - 09:42 am:

The rose is beautiful, my Grammy's favorite color. May she rest in peace...Saima Briita Koski. Thank you Cindy, it is me who is a very lucky girl and Deb for your warm wishes...I am truly blessed!

By Jeffrey P. Carlson (Dlineman) on Friday, October 2, 2009 - 06:26 pm:

Anderson Bergstrom of Iron River, beloved sister in law Karen
Nan Bergstrom Vlamis (Hey Karen, granddaughter Autuum is 1
year old this month!) and best friend from Suomi, Wayne Miller
Carlson of Bayview Location my Escanaba. (Wayne, Lions finally

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 - 08:36 pm:

With my dog Trooper dying, I forgot another person to remember. In memory of Leslie Pluhar, who died when her Yugo lost control and went off the Mackinac Bridge into the Straits.
