A variety of birds return to the U.P. each spring and then there are those that "tough it out" for the winter with the rest of us Yoopers. The majestic Eagle is one that sticks around and Z-Man worked his magic to capture two different shots. One as the bird just landed and another as it was making itself comfortable, most likely to survey the area for something to hunt for dinner.

The Robin in the next photo from Brenda Leigh, didn't have to look far for a treat. The apples that were left on the tree from last fall were softened up and ready for pecking. But the Pine Siskin that Donna MacIntosh snapped up close, had the best situation of them all. Just fly in, set down on the perch and feed on the thistle seeds Donna so graciously put out for her feathered friends.

There's just something relaxing about bird watching, no matter the size and no matter how busily they flit back and forth.

The black smoke in yesterdays picture could be from the Chief Wawatam. She was the last railroad car carrier at the straits. The boat was also a coal burner. She could be seen smoke'n black all the time.

Majestic indeed!
Theatre kings on silver wings
Fly beyond reason
From the flight of the seagull
Come the spread claws of the eagle

Wonderful photos! Thanks to all of you! Several weeks ago there were several bald eagles feeding on the carcass of a deer, one flew up straight at my windshield and I feared it would hit, it didn't, but continued to fly gracefully straight over the top. I swear it looked me straight in the eyes, I couldn't believe the size of it's wingspan nor the size of it's talons. A sight forever emblazoned in my mind!

Thanks so much for the pictures. Beautiful!
I am just crazy about birds. Feed many in my own yard.Husband is starting to grumble at the money we spend to feed them. I will geve up my cigarette's (27 days today) but I won't give up my birds! If you don't have a feeder,get one.They really do bring lots of enjoyment.

Inspiring!

The Eagle

"He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ringed with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls."

-Alfred Tennyson, Lord Tennyson

TO EDDYFITZ;

I have to say the website you gave is FANTASTIC, AWESOME and to say 'Thank You'. I was upset about something and I clicked it on to watch it for a while and the baby eagles were getting fed. Then the partner eagle flew in and dropped off some more food. Thank You for the website. ;O)

Three cheers for Joanne who has gone 27 days without a coffin nail! Good for you. Buy all the bird seed you want.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Monday, April 27, 2009 - 10:59 pm:

The darn thistleseed has almost doubled in price down in Esky. Holy Wah! Almost $20 for a 10# bag! Maybe because they now call it NYJER seed, 'eh? I have 4 feeders for sunflower seed, one for thistleseed and 1 suet block holder. The birds sure are nice to watch. I like the chickadees the best, I guess. They'll sit on a branch and sing while I'm refilling the feeder. Almost like they're saying 'thank you'.

Thistle seed is really expensive...but worth it.

GO JOANNE!!!! FANTASTIC!!!
