One of the first things I remember - as a teenager visiting the shores of Lake Superior for the first time - is the realization that *here* you can feel the sunset. We shared that feeling eight years ago today on these pages.

Good Morning, Everyone! Congratulations, Trollperson, on your Early Bird. Thank Goodness It's Friday!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 07:12 am:

Good morning! I hope everybody has a wonderful day.

Tomorrow I put my tree up in the family room downstairs so that the kids can enjoy it when they come for Thanksgiving. It's become a tradition now. So folks, Christmas music will be blaring.

For those of you here in the MN area, if you're interested, 102.9 is playing Christmas music round the clock now. My car radio is definitely set to that.

Have a great weekend.

Good morning everyone. It is a cold one here(for us)60 degrees and 25 mile an hour winds from the north this AM.

By Norma in Midland (Normainmidland) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 07:18 am:

Good morning all! We are planning to come to the UP for Thanksgiving. We will be arriving on Wednesday next week and staying through to Sunday. Fast Trip! I was wondering if anyone knows of a great place to go for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. I could haul all the stuff up and cook it, but eating out would be much easier. We will be at Little Betsy, but Uncle Chuck, Granpa Norm and Marty will have just gone home. It's just hubby and me. Can't wait!! Any suggestions on dinner would be fabulous. Have a great weekend!!

By Matt Karhu (Matt_k) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 08:24 am:

"Christmas tree" or "Holiday tree", anyone have an opinion as to which is most appropriate today? Perhaps recognizing what was the origin of the Christmas tree is a good place to begin support for one's opinion.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 08:29 am:

The fir tree has a long association with Christianity, it began in Germany almost 1,000 years ago when St Boniface, who converted the German people to Christianity, was said to have come across a group of pagans worshipping an oak tree. In anger, St Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree and to his amazement a young fir tree sprung up from the roots of the oak tree. St Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith. But it was not until the 16th century that fir trees were brought indoors at Christmas time.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 08:32 am:

I think that most of us would agree that it should be a Christmas tree. But this is probably a subject for the Christmas page.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 08:37 am:

Or the Is Jesus Still Alive page? I don't think it belongs here, especially since there are probably some strong feelings, supporting each side, for this topic.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 08:49 am:

Norma, I think there might be a secondary question, which restaurants are going to be open on Thanksgiving Day? If it is open on Thanksgiving, Pilgrim River Steakhouse, near Mich Tech, might be a good option. If worse comes to worse, it looks like KFC in Houghton might be open on Thanksgiving, but that would have to be checked out. I know, that's not a nice Thanksgiving dinner out, but you could bring it in. :-)

I don't know if EconoFoods or Walmart, or somewhere, will fix Thanksgiving dinner for you to eat in your home, if you pre-order it by a certain time, that may be as early as today, and you might have to pick it up by a certain time? I know that some of our grocery stores here in mid-Michigan will do that, but I have not paid attention to their deadlines. :-)

Thank you Debby for the "wonderful day" wish. I can always use one..........

Happy Friday! Rutting season is on at our house! I was just watching a doe and a huge buck chasing around in circles in our field about 200 ft. from our back door. Then over the fence and down to the river ground they went.

By Matt Karhu (Matt_k) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 08:57 am:

Thanks Deb and Marianne, I now agree that the subject of Christmas tree vs. Holiday tree would be better served on another page where it will likely get trashed by pseudo-intellectual nitwits(lol). (:>}

I know that last year on Thanksgiving we ate at Quincy's in Dollar Bay and had an excellent turkey dinner.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 09:23 am:

Janie, thanks for making me smile this morning. I mistook your "Rutting season is on at our house!" to mean inside the house, LOL! That was until I read the next sentence, when I saw what you really meant. But, it was funny for a second.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 09:31 am:

Marianne...rutting season in the house is quite the opposit, there is no running in circles, too old and too tired and a lot of headaches...lol!!!

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 09:32 am:

Quincy's, Mariner North, White House, you need to make some calls.

Good luck to all the high school teams that have semi final games tonight! Ford Field next week end for the winners!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 11:03 am:

And good luck to Midland High, who plays in the Division 2 Semifinals against Lowell, tomorrow at Lansing Everett High School at 1:00 pm! I think between the football team, the cheerleaders & the poms, and a couple of buses for pep whatever, plus the marching band, Midland High is taking down almost 20 school buses tomorrow morning! Midland hasn't made it to the Semifinals since 1994. Congratulations on making it this far, and we hope you make it all the way!

Jack Frost was a busy guy around Knoxville last night and this morning with his artwork. I did a good deed today for a man from Saline, Michigan. I had to get out this morning, and our local IGA and CVS was the last stop. I was waiting for Barbie by the car, and noticed the Dodge van next to be had Mich. plates. I most often pester folks and ask them from where in Mich. you from. I didn't this time, until his van would not start. When he stepped out to go back in the store, maybe to use pay phone, I then asked my pestering question.I said to him I have a idea listening to the way your van was sounding, that should get it to start. When any new vehicle starts and then quickly shuts off, I have often used this method to start them.It worked like a charm,he shook my hand and said I was the man,and off he went.

What you do is..1- press down all the way on the gas pedal for 4 seconds

2...let up and wait 2 seconds,,,,,,,,,,3.. press the gas pedal all the way down while turning the key, just don't let it roar once it starts. With it getting cold you should take your vehicle in for a check up.

I still need to get the summer air out of my tires, and put in some winter, other then that mine is ready.

By Norma in Midland (Normainmidland) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 01:28 pm:

Thanks all for your suggestions for Turkey Dinner!! We will be at the Loading Zone. They are serving a plated turkey dinner. Yeah, I don't have to cook. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Everyone!

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Friday, November 16, 2007 - 02:00 pm:

Those youngsters today run around in flip flops and tank tops in the winter time. The cold doesn't bother them! I have a grand daughter that dresses like that and doesn't even have a coat with her in January. I tell her that I hope her car doesn't quit or slide off in the ditch. She just looks at me like I was in my 8th decade and what do I know!
