For the record, we awoke this morning in the Keweenaw to a heavy blanket of fresh, new snow. Edie and I drove through it late last evening from Calumet to Eagle River, some tough sledding. Heavy winds overnight have whipped the snow into new white dunes all around our home. A nice day to stay inside.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - 07:27 am:

Good Morning! Happy 85th Birthday, today, Dick in FL!

I see that Copper Country awoke this morning to a Blizzard Warning. We have a Wind Advisory here in mid-Michigan. And, we have snow in our forecast here from now all the way through Easter Sunday. Mother Nature seems to be playing some cruel tricks on us this week, after nice spring weather last week, winter is back in spades.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - 07:43 am:

Oops! Dick in FL, I misread the meaning of your "going to be 85" today. I thought you meant it was your 85th birthday; sorry to have aged you a bunch! I think it was because it is so cold & windy here this morning that it never ever occurred to me that you might have meant the temperature was going to be 85. Honestly, though, my favorite temperature is about 80, so I would not mind 85 at all. Now, I would not want it a lot warmer than that, mind you. Talk about being picky...

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - 07:48 am:

I believe Dick was refering to the temps in Florida today Marianne...... :P

Well, it sure will be a funny Easter weekend here in SE Texas. It's been in the 80's with high humidity for the past two weeks. Now, starting Friday, a "cold" snap is coming sendind temps into the 60's for highs this weekend. The morning weathergirl already is saying that it will be jacket weather as lows will be in the 40's. I say bring it on, because I know what's coming in a couple months.

Thank goodness the Dr. and I will be escaping a couple weeks of it when we are in the Copper Country at the end of July.......

And speaking of "White City" I just *happen* to have gone out in
my front yard this morning and taken this shot of White City (a
suburb of beautiful downtown Jacobsville) ...

I sure feel like 85 today...years, that is, not degrees. It was SO hard to peel myself out of bed this morning. Must get caffeine....

I remember passengers tossing coins to the native kids in Houghton.

Over in the Guest Gallery, Fred Longpre has an entire album filled with pictures and info about the South American. You can find his gallery album here: Fred's Gallery

Poor the South American. It's not at all how I remember it.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - 01:27 pm:

It was a stormy night here in Union County. But it was worse all around us.We are in a good spot here in Corryton/Plainview TN.with the Clinch Mts.to block high winds.Claiborne Co.just a bit north of here wasn't so lucky with a F1 tornado touch down. The weather has been so great, but we now have a forcast for lows of below freezing, and highs of 51 for Easter. The wind is comming from the North. Can't you UP there do something about that?

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - 09:03 pm:

Be sure to continue to support the businesses that stayed open for the convenience of their customers during the adverse weather.

By dan belo (Djbelo) on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - 10:09 pm:

Let's hear it for good skiing again!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - 10:46 pm:

What heartbreaking pix of the S.S.SOUTH AMERICAN! Is this the scrapyard in New Jersey? I sailed on the NORTH AMERICAN the whole summer of '59. Both ships used to stop at Mackinac Island twice a week. At that time they were beautimous. The NORTH is on the bottom off New Jersey, and the SOUTH has been scrapped. So sad. :o(
