In case you haven't heard, the majority of the Upper Peninsula and the Keweenaw in particular, was walloped the last few days with a major winter event. Yes, I know it's spring, but apparently Mother Nature doesn't! So rather than beautiful springtime photos of flowers and budding trees, Michele Blau has a snowy Cliff Drive picture to share with us today (first photo). The second shot is that classic view up the Cliffs by Jonathan Hopper, from back in the Winter of '99, seen earlier this week on 'What'sUP'. For those of you unfamiliar with Cliff Drive, it parallels US 41/M 26, between Ahmeek and Phoenix, on your way to Copper Harbor. With all our surroundings covered in white, it looks like we'll be wearing long-johns and boots, instead of Easter bonnets this year!

Those photos are absolutely unreal for this time of year. Just how much did you guys get? WOW!!!
Our "dusting" was gone on the first day. It IS cold though. It feels like winter rather than spring.

The second shot is actually closer to the way it really looks this morning.

We really got blasted here in the Ishpeming/Marquette area too with more on the way. I think the Easter bunny is going to need Santa's sleigh!

Pretty pictures, timing could be better for the snow however.

I happened to catch CNN news this morning around 7:30 and saw some video coverage of someone blowing snow in Chassell, Michigan. Someone named Lynn sent it in and reported 3 feet of new snow in Chassell.

Got an e-mail from my cousin who lives in Lake Linden. He said Atlantic Mine got 38" from this storm!!!!

Tom Skilling (our weather guy) says 28" in Houghton, 38" in Painesville.

I agree with Charlie about the second picture. The branches on the fir trees are pointing straight down under a heavy white coat; the shoreline is iced up again after finally thawing out last week, and we're getting lake-effect snow now. I guess this makes up for the late start on winter - we had a bonfire on the sandy beach on New Years Eve, then it rained.

I hope you don't get a Mother's Day storm up there!! Those stink!!!

I'm gonna have an Easter egg hunt sunday afternoon for the neighborhood kids. Just to make it interesting, I'm not dying the eggs.

Lets hope your neighbor kids have a good sense of humor so those eggs aren't recycled on your front porch halloween. Kind of twisted to not die them then hide them in the snow. But I like it!

Interesting to note too from the NWS Marquette Record Seasonal Snowfall that five of the seven most recent years (2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, and 2006-2007) are among the top 15 snowiest years on record at Marquette; only the 2002-2003 and 2005-2006 seasons are not in that list.

At this rate, Pungvait, the kids might still be finding your eggs in June! I do hope you remember where you hide each one! Umm - that reminds me of an expression that we used to use when we were kids: "last one in's a rotten egg!" :-)

I think I'd rather have in indoor Easter egg hunt this year, but that's not easy for a neighborhood hunt.

Relatively warm water in the Lake and cold air make for more snow. Much the same happened in Buffalo NY earlier this season because Erie was still open. Big snow may well be a symptom of Global Warming rather than evidence discrediting the theory. Note, that during the 2005-06 season, Superior was nearly frozen over and there was less snow. While one might debate weather there really is Global Warming and weather it is a natural cycle or man-made, there are a couple of down to earth reasons to reduce energy consumption - cost and various foreign zealots who control oil production. Whatever the cause, great photos!

For some reason I have not been able to post for 3 & 1/2 days ........ bad enough I was out of coke and stuck inside.....I couldn't respond to any of your comments......I finally was sprung out yesterday afternoon.....where did I go first.....????? Cenex for my coke......ahhhhh what a good burn it was going down!!!!

It was so good to get into work today....good seeing people again....can you believe we are getting more snow.....this is sick....really sick.

Global warming/cooling was happening ages before mankind first exhaled carbon dioxide into earth's atmosphere. I agree with you, Paul. Your last two reasons make sense, particularly the last one. Today is one of those rare days I'm happy not to be in the U.P. with 3' of snow in Chassell and elsewhere.....my gosh!!

still snowing like crazy down here in troll-land of the northern lower peninsula. I bet we've had 12-14 inches. Is it still piling up there in the Keewenaw?

It has been very windy and cold here in N. Ga. It is 40 degrees here now. They say it will be below freezing tonight.I went and covered up my blossoming strawberies and some other things I have planted. I brought some other things in yesterday and just left them in. I was shocked to hear how much snow Painesdale got. Amazing!!!

We have snowflakes here with a temp of 36.So the Cold Front is a giant great big huge one.They say 4 days in a row of cold weather before it returns to normal.The problem is we was way above normal for such a long time with temps breaking records in the 80's.I had a nice tan going.I must have goten soft over the years,if I can't take this cold weather here,I know I could never become a local Yooper UP there anymore.I just heard on local WVLT tv that it hasn't been this cold this time of year in 20 years.Hopefully it will be another 20 years before it dose this again.Gas is up to $2.69 here now.

I don't believe the global warming theories either. I didn't believe them when I was bicycling in Ann Arbor the week of Christmas, nor when I was golfing the first week of January. I think winter actually arrived about January 20th this year in the SE corner of Michigan.
