It will be an interesting weekend for statue workers like these, captured by the Pasty Cam eight years ago. Temperatures will hover near zero (F) during the day and dip into negative numbers at night. Add to that a winter storm warning and lots of lake effect snow predicted and you have a typical winter weekend in the Keweenaw. We will all become one with our snow moving equipment over the next few days.

Of course, one way to stay warm is with a delicious pasty from Pasty Central :-) Order yours for Valentine's Day.

I'm planning on attending the all-school reunion this summer in Calumet. Can someone provide information about the reunion (dates, etc.) so I can start planning?

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 08:47 am:

Happy Groundhog Day and good morning. Mikie, wake up, you missed it!

Saw my groundhog, "Hoggy Doggy Daddy", outside this morning. I asked him does this mean an early spring? He replied, "No, I'm just having a bad lair day"!

By Alicia Marshall (Aliciak) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 09:03 am:

HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY!

The day depends on a state of mind,
a very pleasant one,
with no harm to anybody,
and a great asset if you use it right.

Punxsutawney Phil did NOT see his shadow this morning so they say that means an early spring. Yahoo!!

Groundhog Day and the Full Moon all at once - mmm' the makings of fun and frivolity. I'll be having Spam (just a little ground hog) for supper in honor of the festivities. What is the February full moon called in Indian lore? Is it the Wolf Moon?

By Robinohio (Robinohio) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 10:21 am:

According to the Old Farmers Almanac January was the Full Wolf moon and Feburary is the full Snow Moon

By Sunrise Side MI (Ilovelucy2) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 10:50 am:

Happy Groundhog Day!!!!

Tried to put in an animation, Yooper but couldn't get it. Everyone have a Great Weekend!!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 10:52 am:

What is it with the full moon? My RN friend who works in the emergency room says every full moon the ER is packed. Does it bring out the wild in us?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 11:03 am:

Good Morning, I think that I shall never see an early bird again since I can't get to bed before two in the morning. Maybe Mary could institute a late bird award? Hope everyone is having a nice day, it is blue skys here but cold, Precious is making me put salt on the drive and the sidewalks even though she never walks on them. Joseph my grandson is ill again, strep throat, poor little guy. Made chili yesterday and forgot the beans, so had to rush out and get some, did all this work and Precious made a salad and didn't have any. Oh how madding when you work all day making something and they wont eat it.

By Danielle Adams (Badkid) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 11:03 am:

hey question....anyone know where i can get post cards of copper habor, michigan? i have been searching for like ones of fort wilkins, lake fanny hoe, and such. ive looked all over downtown houghton and even tried the hotels, and bookstores. i need them for a project for my sociology class. thanks.

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 11:15 am:

Joanie, I am also a RN and that is true. All the emergency rooms are packed, the psych units get full and more babies are born. Lets just say, when it is a full moon we know it is going to be a busy day!

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 11:15 am:

That ground hog saw his moon shadow in Idaho the same time his PA cousin didn't see his. Good. Need more skiing for sanity!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 11:19 am:

Badkid, and I'm sure you're not, try www.copperrange - Kevin E. Musser. You might get some great pictures.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 11:20 am:

More info on the names of various full moons....

http://www.kathimitchell.com/moonames.html

I had to look because this talk of moons made me think of the lyric from Colors of the Wind (Pocahantas) about the wolf howling to the blue corn moon.

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 11:25 am:

Post Cards...Copper World in Calumet.

Full Moon... ask any elementary teacher what it does to
children!! Wow.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 11:30 am:

Hey Mikie, just tell everyone to stay off this site till you wake up.
Hey, chili sounds good for Superbowl, good idea! Better check to make sure I have plenty of beans. No problem here with hubby not eating what I make. They need to invent a food pump, like a gas station then all I'd have to do is put the nozzle in his mouth and fill 'em up!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 11:57 am:

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 12:06 pm:

Good afternoon, from hopefully the first post of the afternoon!

Danielle, I think the country store (little grocery store) in Copper Harbor has post cards; I wish I could remember its name. I have bought them there in the past. :-)

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 12:16 pm:

Out here in the Arizona desert, Agua Fria Freddy didn't see his shadow either!

Of course that low-lying ol' snattlerake never does see his shadow! Too "low-lying', I guess!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 12:18 pm:

Congrats Marianne, you got the "Late Bird Award"! Oh boy, David just missed it! Barbie must have made him sleep in the attic - - - he's full of cob webs.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 12:29 pm:

Cindy,
It's 11:30 here in MN and the temp is all the way up to 2, I don't buy the early spring. I think Phil is setting us up for a let down. Look at his beady little eyes, next he'll want to sell you a used car!
Mr. Deb

Cold Water Freddy???

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 01:08 pm:

You guys will get a kick out of this. I got a call from my sons 1st grade teacher yesterday, she is concerned about his speach and wants him to get additional help at school. He is apparently turning his th sound into a d sound. I never really noticed it and mentioned to his teacher it was probably more dialect than a speach problem and told her why, but he needs help with his L's so I am going with it. I had to chuckle when we got off the phone anyway. To confirm I was right I asked him to make the TH sound and he does fine.

Message to my cousin Theresa:
I've replied to your email, but, I've found that often email programs block the Pasty.com address. It has to do with it being interpreted with a hard "A" sound, instead of a soft "A". :-> You're going to have to figure out how to make my email address "whitelisted" or "allowed" in order to receive an email from me.

" Cold Water Freddy???"

Yes, that ol 'snattlerake' was named for the river of the same name:
Click ® Agua Fria River, AZ

The small urban subdivision of the same name Agua Fria, AZ [Zoom in about 5 clicks on the "+" button] (near Sun City, Youngtown, El Mirage) is named for the adjacent river, which is the water source for Lake Pleasant, about 20 miles north) [Scroll the map to the north].

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 02:35 pm:

First graders crack me up! I just had one explain to me that the "hedgehog" saw his shadow, but the other hedgehogs didn't, so they'll have summer right now!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 03:11 pm:

Yep, those first graders are just classic. When my oldest, Billy, was in first grade, he came home one day and asked, "Mom, can you write in the dark?" I replied, "I think so, what is it you want me to write?" Billy replied, "Your name on this report card".

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 05:07 pm:

I love that one, Joanie, about signing the report card in the dark!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 05:22 pm:

Well, I know you guys are sick of me but gotta tell you about my youngest son, Johnny. First day of first grade, Johnny gets off the school bus. When he comes in the house I ask him, "How was your first day of school?" He replies, "I guess not too good, gotta go back again tomorrow."
I sure miss those boys.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 07:32 pm:

I hope none of our Florida pasty cammers got hit by the huge tornado which blew through central Florida this morning. Folks in Lady Lake and Deland suffered devastating damage...other areas were also affected. The last I heard there had been 18 deaths.
Weather is really something! Hope there is plenty of snow for the statue workers this weekend...they really outdo themslves each year.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 08:52 pm:

full moon...
You know, they call the moon luna as well...and then we have lunatics...
I think its the gravitational pull on the brain...just like the tides which are caused by the moon...your brain ebbs and flows too...
must be too much pressure somewhere causing folks to go bonkers.

Or the martians are playing tricks on us...aiming the high beams at us until we can't stand it anymore.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 10:26 pm:

Yes, I have heard from several elementary school principals, both current & former, to beware of the full moon's effect on kids' behavior. And, I have also heard from ER RN's (moms of friends, etc), that the ER's seem to fill up during full moons.

To add to the above full moon saga: Labor & Delivery nurses swear there is a correlation with the numbers of births during full moons (more births during full moons). When I went into labor after my water broke a month early with my middle son, it was during a full moon, with the added factor of a big summer thunderstorm (low barometric pressure seems to have an effect, too) ...

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 07:11 pm:

Joanie, I have a story for you. It was an election year and the candidates were going door to door. My 8 year old son answers the door. The candidate asks him if he had a good day at school and he told him he guessed it was okay. Then the guy asked him what he learned. He told him that apparently he didn't learn enough cuz he had to go back tomorrow. That guy just busted! He told me I had quite the funny kid. I knew that though. Problem was he was serious. LOL

By Danielle Adams (Badkid) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 09:22 pm:

lol deb!! gotta love that kinda humor.

By Danielle Adams (Badkid) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 09:25 pm:
