Eight years ago, the snow started and kept coming all week. This Airborne Express van, picking up a load of pasties from Still Waters, saw just the beginning of things.

No such luck this year -- looks like cloudy and drizzly through the weekend.

By Terry Szpieg (Tszpieg) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 07:00 am:

Hello and Good Morning Everyone,
I have a question, but first; Let me say how wonderful, entertaining, and informative I've found this site to be. I've been reading all of your posts and looking at everyones wonderful photographs for a few years now and I've enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you all!
Now- my story & question; Last year, my family and I were making our twice-yearly visit to the rest of my family in Calumet. While we were there we drove to Copper Harbor for a bit of shopping. While we were at The North Station we bought the coolest little fleece "Lake Affect" hat for my wonderful son. Not thinking at the time, he was the only one to get one. Now, my wife and I would like one as well.
Here's the problem; I've contacted Jody (the owner, I think) through The North Station website, and found out that she is closing the store. I've tried to contact her again so she could put me in touch with the woman who made the hats for her, but I haven't heard back from her. So here's where you come in (hopefully) From what I've found on The North Station's website, Sandi Pennell makes the hat I'm looking for. I think she is a local woman, and I am offering a "finders fee" to the first person who can put me in touch with her in some way (phone, email, whatever) so I can order my wife and I a couple of her hats.
You may think this is a silly extent to go to for finding a winter hat, but, as silly as it may sound, that particular hat has strong sentimental value to my wife and I. It would mean very much for me (and be a nice surprise for my better half) to be able to order a few for us. It was my son's favorite hat.
If anyone has any information at all, please, please email me with anything that might help me locate Sandi Pennell, or another store that might carry that particular hat.
Sorry for the long letter, but I figured if anyone could help me, I'd probably find them here.
Thanks again for the wonderful site. I'll continue to visit every day. Wish me luck finding our hats.
(I hope this isn't an inappropriate post here. I apologize if it is).

Thanks again,
Terry

Good Friday morning!

By FJL (Langoman) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 08:52 am:

I'm sure the good "Capt" will be able to help Terry. His knowledge seems to be inexhaustible.....;)

By Dennis Harju (Upsuomi) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 08:56 am:

Hi, Try using www.zabasearch.com ! I find this site very useful for contacting lost friends. Good luck!

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 09:06 am:

I don't think Capt. Paul will be able to answer this one. If he knows a lot about fashion and clothing, he's kept it hidden from me for years.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 09:40 am:

Dr. Nat thanks for my first chuckle of the day.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 10:08 am:

Since when was Carhartt and a flannel not high fashion?!?!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 10:24 am:

If you get the hats, we'll be needing to see a close-up picture on pastycam!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 10:42 am:

Captain Paul, don't forget the Redwing boots!

By Donald R. Elzinga (Donagain) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 10:55 am:

Terry - I think we caught a picture of you headed for Copper Harbor?
Copper Harbor

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 11:55 am:

Now there would be the way to do a little copper country cruising in the summertime....

And fyi, I have my Redwings on right now!! ;-)

By Carole (Carole) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 12:02 pm:

Terry, try contacting Sharon Smith (view from the field). Her email address is under 'mission' on her website.

By Richard Johnson (Dick_fl) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 01:05 pm:

Terry, here is Sharons email address. s_i_smith@aviewfromthefield.com It is a bit hard to find unless you know where to look. ;-)

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 01:13 pm:

Captain Paul, I knew you were a down-to-earth kinda guy!!! Bet you own a hat with ear-flaps!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 01:23 pm:

And speaking of Redwings, I believe it's nine in a row now!!!!!!!
Mr. Deb

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 01:51 pm:

Glen Bo Schembechler has died.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 02:10 pm:

Joanie:
It's hard for a geologist not to be "down-to-earth." ;)

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 02:17 pm:

Paul, I don't know Glen Bo Schembechler, but I'm sorry, may he rest in peace.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 02:31 pm:

Good thing I Googled Bo Schembechler before I made fun of Paul & Joanie! I didn't know his name was Glen Bo! I thought Paul forgot a comma and was telling a friend named Glen that Bo had died. I guess I should always pause before hitting send!

By Terry Szpieg (Tszpieg) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 02:32 pm:

Thank you all for all of your help. Seems that my search has turned into a bit of a quest! I have a few leads that I'm currently working on thanks to the help of many of you. I really appreciate it. I'll let you know if I turn anything UP!

Thanks again,

Terry-in-troll-land

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 03:00 pm:

I"m certain Michigan will dedicate tomorrow's game to Bo's memory. Go Blue!!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 03:47 pm:

Terry, thanks for the great gift idea. Ordered my hubby a "Northwoods" woolen hat for Christmas. (With ear-flaps like Captain Paul's).

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 03:58 pm:

Joanie, red flannel or blaze orange?
Mr. Deb

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 04:19 pm:

Mr. Deb, had to go with the standard Yooper hat, red & black flannel! Hey, I might be from ILL-ANNOY, but I'm UP hip!!

By Melissa Sytsma (Melissa5876) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 04:53 pm:

Sorry to hear that Jody is closing the North Station. I have a collection of her snowmen, she is very creative.

Its a sad day for Michigan football, rest in peace, Bo!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 05:24 pm:

Don't worry about Michigan football, remember: It's not if you win or lose, it's how you play the game!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 05:27 pm:

Forgot one thing: I'm a Chicago Bears fan, so I'm getting used to losing. They have been doing pretty good so far but, it might be an accident. Sure miss Mike Ditka!

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 05:56 pm:

Bo Schembechler one of Michigan's greatest coaches ever! It is indeed a sad day in football!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 06:17 pm:

Joanie,it could be worse. You could have to suffer through the indignity of being a Vikings fan. They've been done since Bud left.
Mr. Deb

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 08:13 pm:

the vikings have always stunk...especially that guy with that horn....
from a PACKER'S fan....

By the way...Bo was one of the greatest coaches of all time, not just Michigan. R.I.P.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 09:34 pm:

Go "Pack"! I hope the game Sunday is broadcast here.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 10:29 pm:

David, Try living with a Vikings fan! However, the Pack can take a flying leap!

Hopefully Michigan will be playing with Bo in mind tomorrow and kick some Buckeye butt!!! Go BLUE!!!!!!!!!!

By tom ghering (Tomgheringtcmi) on Friday, November 17, 2006 - 11:04 pm:

A guy in a bar leans over to the guy next to him and says, "Wanna hear a
Buckeye joke?" The guy replies, "Well, before you tell that joke, you should
know something. I am 6' tall, 200 lbs. and I am an Ohio State
graduate. The guy sitting next to me is 6'2", 225 lbs. and he is an Ohio
State graduate. The guy right next to him is 6'5", 250lbs. and he is also an
Ohio State graduate. Now, you still wanna tell me that joke?"

The first guy says, "No, not if I'm going to have to explain it three times"

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, November 18, 2006 - 11:54 am:

Tom-- I just sent that wonderful joke on to a diehard Ohio State
fan. Think how hard it is to find someone to share this rivalry with
in Toronto. I went to U of M, so of course I picked up Wolverine
pencils for all of my students while I was at the M-Den in the LP a
couple of weeks ago.
