Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 04:18 am:

A regular ritual each spring, putting out the signs which had been stored away every winter. The disappearance of the snow back in 1998 was about the same as it has been this year. But some years we have had enough on the ground to ride snowmobiles right up to Mother's Day.

Pasty.NET sure could have used a bucket truck like this the past few years. Recently we did purchase such a vehicle, and you may see John Schneiderhan riding around the Keweenaw with it. Sure makes the roof/tower work easier to reach. I'm referring of course to the receivers and access points which continue to be implemented here in the U.P. to bring high-speed Internet access to even the most remote locations.

Tomorrow morning at 10am up on Brockway Mountain we will be switching over from wind to solar power for the summer, for the broadband relay station at the gift shop. This is an important outpost for bringing the signal to many Pasty.NET members, including yours truly. The words you are now reading have actually come to you by way of Brockway Mountain. (quite a flight!)

Absolutely gorgeous. I'll bet they're heading to

Thanks Yooper! Good spring weekend all!

Hola! Happy Cinco de Mayo!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 08:03 am:

Yooper, As usual, another great graphic.

Happy weekend all. Heading to Grand Forks, ND tomorrow to pick up all of my son's stuff from his dorm. Then he heads home next week after finals. It'll be nice to have him back home but once he starts being a slob, it'll be good to have him go back to school too. Have a great weekend!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 08:06 am:

I forgot, Margaret, you're hilarious!

By Martha Kirk (Misschiefie) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 09:35 am:

Charlie, just heard on WWJ (950 am) that you are to be on their IT Tech report tomorrow as they talk to the "internet provider with the delightful name of Pasty.Net." Not sure what time, if you SE Michigan Pasty.com fans want to listen, but I heard the report at 8:25 a.m. Be nice to hear what Mr. Hopper sounds like, don't you think?

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 10:08 am:

I so enjoyed your pics today, Japei! Do you live anywhere near this interesting site? So nice to see such historic places. I'm always amazed by places dating to the really old days. I'm impressed with ancient buildings etc. Compared to our history to the 1700's our country is just a youngster........And yooper, love your waterfowel scene. You have such clever graphics.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 12:40 pm:

So what's going on with the Houghton-Hancock lift bridge exercise today? It looks like several runs from full down to full up and back again.

At 12:38PM (EDT) the bridge is back in full-down position (nominal winter configuration) again, with vehicular traffic using the upper deck.

All this with no evidence of waterborne traffic on the canal. (?) Practice runs? Gettin' the rust out of the works?

(As seen via the Michigan Tech Fund (motion) Cam

By dlp (Babyseal) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 01:14 pm:

FRNash, I am not 100% on this but I believe MDOT is inspecting the bridge. I got caught in the traffic twice the other day. Jad a good 20 minute wait each time. Keep waiting to see the boat come out on the other side, and it never did. Bummer.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 02:25 pm:

I'll gladly take lift bridge traffic over Houston traffic anyday :P

By Cotton (Cotton) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 04:53 pm:

It's 38 degrees & raining & SNOWING in Gwinn. We were up north in the Copper Country for my father in law's cataract surgery & it was windy & cold the two days we were there. This morning it was snowing & blowing up there. It stopped later on. But all the way home it was a mixture & rain & snow. But we have to remember it is only the part of May. Ed told us he remembers on May 15th many years ago, his neice got married & there was 14 inches of snow that day. They threw pennies to the kids & the kids had to scramble & find them in the snow. This week end is supposed to be nice.

Wonderful picture of Jack and Emma.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 10:33 pm:

They are too adorable for words! I went to my 2 first grade grandchildren's school for Grandparent's Day today. That was so wonderful. They had this cute little performance done by each class and they all sang songs together too. Then we got to go to each child's classroom and see their desks, work, etc. Mr. Deb and I split up so as neither child would feel left out. Then we traded kids. It was so great! Next is our 4 year old grandson, Ben's turn. I can't wait!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 11:04 pm:

Isn't it fun being a Granparent?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 11:13 pm:

By the way Precious had a concert tonight I go to the grandkids concerts and also to my wifes. Kelly plays the violin and played it at her wedding to Justin. They eloped and took the families along with them. We met at Justins house, supposedly to meet Kelly's family since they were going to be married a few months later and limozines pulled up and took us to the church for the wedding. I think I am a very lucky man to have the family that I have, including all of the cousins around the world who I have met on Pasty cam and what's up. Can you tell that I am bored again?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 11:45 pm:

Margaret, My mother in law is in Elpaso visiting her son do you know anyone who could kidnap her and take her to Mexico. It would be nice if she would stay down there. Only kidding haha

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 01:28 am:

Hey Mikie, You want Beverly and me swing by and pick up your mother in law, enroute from picking up Ms Katie's flamingos?

Cotton, Honest, Miss Charlotte and I have not been doing our snow dance...honest ;) Right Charlotte...(nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 09:53 am:

sur5er, Depends on what you plan on doing with her, she would love the flamingos. Could you keep her in Indiana for a while?

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 12:15 pm:

You know, Mikie, I really liked you until you started with the mother-in-law wise--- remarks. Every mother-in-law is somebodys MOTHER. I get so ticked when I hear those kind of remarks. Thankfully I had a wonderful father-in-law and I don't say much about the mother-in-law. If you can't say anything nice, shut my mouth. And I consider myself a loving mother-in- law.:O)

By Cotton (Cotton) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 12:55 pm:

My son in laws just love me SO they say! My daughters get mad at me cuz when I go home after visiting them the guys say "The clothes aren't folded like when your Mom was here." And " I'm used to having my sandwiches made". "Tell so & so how to make pasties." I laugh! Thing is I've only made pasties about 3 times in my life. Mothers & or Mothers in laws- you're darned if you do & darned if you don't. Thing is they are always asking when I'm coming back again. LOL So there Mikie with the mother in law comments!!LOL

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 02:28 pm:

My mother in law and I get along quite well. She and I go antiquing and take trips together when Precious can't make it. I like to tease her and she plays practical jokes on me. Besides she gave me her most precious possesion, she reads all of my posts down in Texas and will probably find a way to pay me back for my comments. If you can't tease your family who can you tease?
My grandson Tim is with me today and we went to McDonalds for the play structure and some male bonding. Kid likes to eat apples dipped in catsup instead of caramel.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 03:33 pm:

Mikie, Gross about the ketchup and apples...sorta gets the gag reflex going there...must definately be a male thing, eh.
Did you see the post I posted for you...I think it was Wednesday...or perhaps it was Thursday...can't remember now. But anywho, it was an Indiana legal funny, that I thought you and your son would find quite amusing :)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 04:31 pm:

Read it and Justin said it could only happen in Indiana. Don't forget my mother in law when yo go for the flamigos. Before my father in law died for his birthday I rented two hundred flamigos for his yard. He had bought one for the cottage and we all made fun of him over it.When he was eighty I got the flamigos for him. He was still commenting about it on his eighty eight birthday. My mil and I love to play tricks on everyone in the family. I sent word to my brother in law in Texas to have my mil kidnapped and put to work in a Mexican business. He wont do it.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 12:10 am:

Hey sur5er: I had the mother-in-law from h***...so when we pick up Mikie's mother and mine, we can put them both in the back of the truck with those flamingos and dump them all off in Mexico. But you have to drive cause I don't want to be picked up for mother-in-law napping.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 01:04 am:

Beverly, Sounds like fun to me. I think I would have immunity from the mother-in-law kidnapping charges, as neither one is my mother-in-law...so I will be happy to drive the getaway car :) Zoom, zoom, zoom :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 05:28 pm:

Beverly, Are we related? I thought my mil was the mil from h***! Geez, to think there's more than one of them. OMG!!! My hubby LOVES HIS mil. She is so good to him, probably better to him than me. j/k However, I am not so lucky and even he knows it.

Ms. Katie, Believe it or not, not all mil's are nice. Thankfully we don't have to deal with her a lot. She does make it difficult, but we are nice to her anyway. Shower her with love, that's what I say.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 07:08 pm:

My mil and I were at loggerheads when we first met. I was taking her Precious to Europe for the next several years and she didn't like me for doing it. Was not her favorite and still not until the oldest granchild was born. My brother in law who is married to my wifes stepsister is definatly the favorite, but I have the kids and grandkids and she has to deal with me. She and I do a lot of things together when my wife is busy, like garage sales, antique sales, or doing things with my grandkids. But if there is someone else available I am on my own. Also has a lot to do with the fact that I am of a different ethinticity, not Polish, never have been as good as others in the family. We sure don't treat our son in laws or daughter in law like I have been treated. My one son in law and I do every thing together along with his kids. So you are right not all mil's are nice, but when you get lemons etc.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 07:42 pm:

Mikie, I don't treat my daughter-in-laws like that either. My mil treats all of her daughter-in-laws with distaste. None of us are good enough for her baby boys. Yet she's not close to any of her own children either. She always said she couldn't stand anybody else's kids and she could barely tolerate her own. Who says that? To me, grandchildren are everything. She hardly pays any attention to hers. We're all different I guess. As long as you've treated her daughter well, that should be what counts. And it sure sounds as if you do. My hat's off to you for putting up with it all.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 08:04 pm:

Deb, When my father in law died, my son Justin and I were holding his hand and comforting him while the others in the room just stood there watching him die. He had a sense of humor, asked my wife, who is a cantor in her church to sing for him. After she was finished he looked at me and said "off key" which she wasn't. He just had to tease her one more time. After this old Aggie was a little nicer to me. She knows who will take care of her when she decides to go.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 10:31 pm:

Deb and Mikie, it sounds like your mil's were sweetie pies compared to mine. My mil was a real Monster in law and thank goodness I don't have to deal with her any more!!!!!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 11:08 pm:

Mikie, Beverly, and Usedtobeayooper, I am so glad that my daughter's future mil is a wonderful and loving person. And Beverly, I had a mil like that...nice thing about divorces, eh...goodbye mil from hades;)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, May 8, 2006 - 07:16 am:

Sur5er, It could be a BAD thing about divorces too. I'm closer to my EX-mil than I will EVER be to the present one. What's funny is my hubby gets along famously with my ex-mil too. She was a keeper, but you know how that goes.

Beverly, you have my sympathies. I guess there's always someone worse than the one you have to deal with yourself. Like I said, we just keep our distance as much as possible. She gets mad, but she'll never be satisfied anyway.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, May 8, 2006 - 09:58 am:

Aggie, Called and left a message to get off the mil stuff [different word] or I will pay for it when she gets back to Michigan. And what is wrong with flamingos? From •••• isn't even close.
