The idea of including local residents among the daily Pasty Cam photos originated early in the life of this project. Jonathan happened to stop in at Red Cole's antique shop, where Red promptly tried to sell him George Gipp's wood stove. Another one of those 'portrait format' shots, if you've been following these daily flashbacks to 1998.

Speaking of the Gipp's, today is Manila Gipp's funeral at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Laurium. One little known fact about this remarkable lady is her work with Still Waters after her retirement. Over the years Still Waters has been able to serve the elderly of the Copper Country because caring people like Manila Gipp have donated time and money to make it possible. Thank you to all of the friends of this website who have had a part in supporting this non-profit home.

more tomorrow

Usedtobeayooper--

Happy to see you got the Early Bird today. I
think I got it once or twice only, which is
surprising since I am an Early Bird! I'm not
complaining because I'm just happy to have
this site in my life.

Can't believe you know nothing about the "Gipper."

By Eugene Zuverink (Zubeinwayland) on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 - 10:12 am:

Just wondering, Who is Manila Gipp to
George Gipp (The Gipper) George was the seventh
born of eight children,He was born in 1895 the
last one in 96 so all being at least 100,
Manila Gipp must be a neice of George.
Someone say right or wrong
Thankszube

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 - 10:36 am:

There was also a Manila Gipp who worked at the Senter Plant when my husband worked there.I wonder how she was related.

Charlie......could you show us, again, the football pictures that were on this site on Sunday' "whats up"?...surly, George Gipp played football with these guys because they in the same age range. "....George Gipp would be 110 yrs old and I think Manila Gipp was 103 when she died recently....Manila spent many years at Memorial, hospital working as a head nurse (I think)..... "Paul in Ill" is related to the Gipp family so he may have some info on the connection.

By Bob Tiura (Bobtiura) on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 - 02:10 pm:

Manila'a obit was in this week's Gazette. She was born in Wolverine (LP?, grew up in Calumet, went to nursing school in Grand Rapids and worked at the Calumet Hospital beginning in 1924. She married Gilbert Gipp in 1934 and had one child, Kyle, listed as living in Skanee. She returned to nursing work from 1944 t0 1968. No mention is made of any other Gipp family members.

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 - 02:40 pm:

Manila Gipp married into the Gipp family in the 30's,(per the obit) after George died at age 25.
My grandmother's brother, Hunk Anderson, played w/Gipp at Notre Dame. Notre Dame has Hunk listed as from Hancock. He was a Calumet High graduate.

The Interlake Steamships 690 foot, 24,800 ton Herbert C. Jackson, returning from Duluth delivery on Sunday for MidWest Energy, is now on anchor in Bete Gris Bay. Not sure why, as weather seems benevolent. Anyone know why .....

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 - 07:57 pm:

My brotherin law,Raymond DuTemple was the steward on the Jackson for many years and retired from that ship about 15 years ago. He sailed for forty years on several ships. He then retired to Bootjack and passed away about ten years ago. There were several men on the Jackson from the Copper Country that sailed with Ray.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 - 11:12 pm:
