Now that we've had a taste of Spring here in the Keweenaw, the boaters will be getting the itch to launch their vessels and get out on the Big Lake. Carl Kiilunen gives us a pictorial report of the conditions at hand, for putting your boat in at Big Traverse. These two shots are of the Schoolcraft Township Boat Landing, heading into Big Traverse Bay. Check out the trail cut through the thin coating of ice. Looks like someone was in a hurry to get out on Lake Superior and plowed the ramp clear so they could get out there and do some fishing. I'm betting it's chilly out there on the Lake this time of year!

Mary, I knew it was Big Traverse before I read your article. Nice pictures again today. And as usual, you're a great reporter. Keep it up!

In the top photo it looks like I can see a commercial fishing vessel. When does their season open?

Ah, fishing.. I just picked up my fishing license yesterday, and can't wait to get the boat out. It's been waaaaaay too long.

The parking lot at the Marina was still snowed in on 3/28. The marina dock is still snowed in. There was still a lot of ice upstream in the river.
I tied my boat upstream at Jim Wiita's dock for almost 30 yrs. Usually the last week of April, except back in 1973 when we had a mild winter and spring I was able to launch my 22 ft.boat and leave it tied up at Jims dock at Big Traverse in the last week of March.
Of course we had to break some night ice when we went out fishing in the morning. Good fishing to you all.

....Gus say hi to Jim and Eileen. We usually get together for dinner in July when our LLHHS class has a mini-reunion..as the years go by these reunions seem even more important. .......I remember his Mom and Dad......Maggie taught here in Escanaba.....Bill & Elaine were my neighbors for years at Bootjack...wonderful folks....

Whew. I'm checking almost 2 weeks of pasty.com I've missed while traveling home. This is like moving to a new home twice a year. And of course this techno-idiot is struggling with phones, computer service, satellite services etc. The best part is catching up with the bushel basket of 2nd class mail held back And two weeks of pasty-patter. Hi all.

John and Anne; fishing season for the commercial fishing boats must start as soon as they can get out to open water. On www.eagleharborweb.net George said that the fish tug Spirt pulled into the marina sometime last week. If you go to www.airstreamcomm.net/~fishtug/index.htm it is a site for allot of the old fish tugs. Go to the photo gallery and take a look at the tug Faithful and the tug Ione there are pictures of both of them breaking out the ice to get to open water

A few years ago, with the ad and address, I ventured along the Mink Farm Road to buy a spare pair of cross-country skis. I forgot about skiing when I discovered this area. We pick blueberries in this beautiful neck of the woods every summer. Next year I will spend more taking in the sights.
I like the High Voltage sign, tall antenna and satellite dish. Gotta have 'em because some days just aren't very pretty and we have to depend on the views within the walls.
