Philip Odum was out snapping some bird photos recently and shares several with us here, today. The first two are of a Bohemian Waxwing, taken at the Dunbar Forest near Neebish Island here in the U.P. According to the birding references I checked, this bird is a winter visitor around these parts. What a striking bird it is, with outstanding markings. I was curious as to the name "bohemian", so I looked that up also and found that it refers to the nomadic movements of a flock of these birds in the winter. The inhabitants of Bohemia are said to live an unconventional lifestyle like that of a gypsy, as do the Bohemian Waxwings, flitting about from place to place.

The bottom photo is that of a Gray Jay, also called a Whiskey Jack. Phil took this shot along the Pesheekee grade, near Champion. I'm not sure how he knows this, but he claims they just love cheese curls. I'm guessing he must have shared his lunch with this guy, trying to lure him in for good photos. It looks like it worked, since he seems to be posing perfectly for Phil here

That's a fine looking bird. He does resemble his cousin the Cedar Waxwing. I think the Gray Jay will eat anything you are kind enough to feed it.

Pretty birds. I don't think I've seen a Bohemian waxwing before.

Nice photographs! I miss all the birds that visited our feeders when we lived up at Red Jacket Shaft. I always enjoyed watching them from our dining room window.

Be careful if you come UP to sled the trails. Too many "hot doggers".
