Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 06:34 am:

We may never know what this anonymous person is doing here, off the mouth of the Pilgrim River, for only Paul Trautman and the gentleman in question know for sure! Let us just speculate for a few moments... he can't be checking out the girls on the beach, well, he could be, but they'd be bundled up just as much as he, I would think. Maybe he's spying on his employees who are supposed to be working, but are checking out Pasty.com's daily picture. OR, perhaps he's doing some spring birding here in the Copper Country. What do you think? One thing for sure, his feet must be getting chilled!

By Larry-IN on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 06:38 am:

Dave, Laurium - I just about fell off my chair at that one!

By Mohawk on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 08:25 am:

I think tax guy is right. :) Or else he's got a bad case of spring fever, and he's on the look-out for the Keweenaw Star.

By French-M, Duluth on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 08:48 am:

Perhaps his forgetful wife, angry that her ice-fishing husband came home late for dinner again, scolded him and said "you go sit out there on the ice in your chair until I tell you it's ok to come back home!"

By Down State Dave on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 08:49 am:

Or as the old country song says -- "lookin' for love in all the wrong places"

By just-minding-my-own-business, Lake Linden on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 08:56 am:

He's a hired P.I. checking up on you-know-who about you-know-what, and trying to get a closer look with the watich-a-ma-call-its, sitting on the thing-a ma-jig, hoping to see what's-their-face caught in the act of running amuck with that wishy-washy know-it-all, I think?

By Al, TN on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 08:57 am:

An immigration agent, of course.

By Rich, SW Mi. on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 09:06 am:

Perhaps he is sitting in the seat of a bass-boat which is under the sufface of the water?

By Gary, CO on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 09:20 am:

He's looking for the little Dutch Boy who failed to keep his finger plugging the leak in the dike. Or maybe he's looking for his common sense.

By Toivo from Toivola on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 09:29 am:

He's one of our regular Pasty Camwatchers.
Ahhh...

By Yooper Gal on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 09:35 am:

I think Toivo has it pegged -- he's looking for the big one to
come on down the canal!

By Jackson, MI on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 09:36 am:

Hey Toivo, I want a monitor like that one.

By lookin'at green grass on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 09:40 am:

By David S. - FL. on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 10:27 am:

By E-man, Downstate on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 11:57 am:

Common sense here people, this guy is just looking for lures to restalk his tackle box for the next ice fishing season which is about a month and a half away. Thrifty Yoopers known for there deep pockets and short arms!

HE IS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MARK HIS ICE FISHING HOLES FOR NEXT YEAR

By D & D on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

DOWN STATER

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

I was given the ultimatum 3 weeks ago. She said "it's me or your fishing."

Gee I miss her.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 12:08 pm:

I think Dewey Bruce is right. Yooper Homeland Security.

By Fran,Ga on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 12:45 pm:

Ruth,do they still go smelting down by the bridge? We sure had a lot of fun down there when the smelt ran. I know they can't on the one side that was sold.I never realized anyone owned that little bit of land that was on the other side.

I can just imagine how cold that guys feet are!!

By WhitePiner, MN on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 12:54 pm:

Maybe he/she is on the look out for Aino Bin Loggin.

By Victor P., Houston Tx on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 12:56 pm:

He is definitely lookin for the Loch Ness (Kitchi-gummi?) Monster. See the the black shape of a head sticking up out of the water in front of him.

By MS, Howell, MI on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 01:04 pm:

I think that person is lookin at all that garbage along the shoreline and waiting for it to disappear like many do.

By finnferrfunn on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 01:12 pm:

That's not garbage, it's 'rustic memories of bygone eras'...

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 01:13 pm:

You Pasty Cammers (did I spell that correctly?) are all too funny today! Thanks for the great picture and the amusing comments. The Pasty Cam sure makes my work day fun!

By Joe Finn, Rhinelander, Wi on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 01:23 pm:

He is Julio's night watchman waiting for day shift to check in.

By vaalea on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 01:33 pm:

That's the lifegaurd on duty on the UP Fourth of July

By ms on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 01:54 pm:

I'm surprised none responded about he's polluting the water with his chair! Some sure ripped on the kids just having some innocent fun in a truck on a muddy road last week! Too many fun sheriff's these days!!!! Thanks for the nice shots!

By finnferrfunn on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 02:05 pm:

That is actually not a chair, it is the modified conning tower of a Yooper submarine with Heikki manning the watch!

By RCW on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 02:14 pm:

Nope , your all wrong, he's watching the 4 flocks of geese that just passed over $ Bay heading north. Summer must be close behind!!

By mel, west coast on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 02:16 pm:

That'll be one sad day in the UP if the trees looked like that on the Fourth of July!!
finnferrfunn - you sound like a hard core Yooper!! One state's junk is the UP's treasure...

By ace tx on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 02:43 pm:

Thank You all for the great comments only in the U.P. would you see a great picture & such great minds at work. Much better then a few days back. Thank you again for the good laugh!

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 03:00 pm:

If that is Heikki manning the lookout of a submarine, he must be looking for those "troll-ing boats"...:)

By Could it be the same guy? on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 03:06 pm:

Isn't this same man that was shown fishing in the Daily Mining yesterday. A fisherman from downstate Howell...

By Rice Lake Gary on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 03:15 pm:

Apparently everyone has wayyyyy too much free-time

By AZYooper on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 03:32 pm:

Unusual high tide for the great lakes

By The Dam Guy, Parasite Creek on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 04:52 pm:

Obviously a human decoy. The ducks have finally started to fight back. They also put out motorized ones with the arm that goes up and down, beer in hand. (Weber's Sporting Goods, $99.95) Look out for the mallard in the human blind...

By ert, GA on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 04:53 pm:

Paul Trautman, PLEEEEZ tell what the man is doing. I think he is looking at that merganser in the water..........

By Fran, C.FL on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 05:24 pm:

Can't think of any cute thing to say! But sure enjoyed all the comments! Let'have more of these days!!

By Dave of Mohawk on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 05:25 pm:

I can see the M.V. Sandy in the background on the right side of the photo. She belongs to the National Park Concessionaire at Rock Harbor Lodge and is used for tours in the summer. As for the person in the chair, I think someone just simply posed for a really neat picture.

By Jeff M, FL on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 05:27 pm:

Nearly 5:30 and I'm ready to vote: Best "guess" I've seen so far "By vaalea at 01:33 pm: That's the lifegaurd on duty on the UP Fourth of July." A VERY close second goes to "the Dam Guy" for his "Human Decoy" suggestion.
Lots of fun today! Thanks.

By Greta, MIlwaukee on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 05:43 pm:

Newest covert operator working with Fox and Mulder, 'cuz "they're out there somewhere".

By Dave - Colorado on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 05:57 pm:

Does anyone remember Monty Python? "Spot the Loonie... There's one!!" Actually there appears to be a Cormorant swimming in front of this guy... Perhaps the speculation about bird-watching is correct, but it is no where near as fun as the rest...

By dave s Mad Wisc on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 06:47 pm:

the truth...its actually his backyard after the snow melt...
He's trying to spot his Weber floating away.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 07:30 pm:

I think it's Toivo... Of course, I'm still not even sure he is real! WHERE'S MY T-SHIRT? :)

By grimace on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 07:44 pm:

Who is that hooded man?
He is one that escapes the political /tax/coporate
land. Set adrift he seeks the yooper land. The one of
fish , deer , trees , rocks and birds . It is all
that he cares , but most of all ,he is the bird
man.
Time slows in the Great U.P. Make it slower !

By Ms. Katie on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 07:49 pm:

You guys are a hoot!!! You make my day !!!How about a few more? I, too, think the one about a life guard for 4th of July is the closest.heh...heh.

By BT.TC on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 08:21 pm:

Yeah...I like the UP "4th in the UP" man I have been dressed like that more than once on the 4th

By Down State Dave on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 09:42 pm:

By Ahmeek Cliff Dweller on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 12:20 am:

My vote goes to Downstate Dave for his rendition of "Lookin' for love in all the wrong places"!!! That one made me really laugh!

Now, for my version of what the guy is doing:
guy in chair,"Yup. The boots are keepin' out the water, the binocs are workin' good, the parka is keepin' me warm and the chair is holdin' up in a light breeze and current. Don't need to return anything to Cabelas."

Glad the hip replacement went well for sistah #1!

By MIKE-SOUTH DAKOTA on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 12:35 am:

I saw that guy in the same spot a few years ago-watching the ice go out!And if he stays a few more days he's going to see it come in.Only in the U.P.Miss the whole area!! Can't wait to move back, eat pasties,Gino's,thimbleberry jam, lake trout-nothing like it.

By Martha K., Pinckney, MI on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 01:00 am:

I think he looks like the guy riding a bicycle with a deer around his neck http://www.pasty.com/discuss/messages/994/1698.html. He had to get a new parka after that, but the rest of the outfit looks the same, doesn't it?

By Sherry, Gulfport MS on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 04:41 am:

Hey, I'd recognize the Bay anytime! And those geese flying over, they were sent by me from Gulfport!! Sherry

By Toivo from Toivola on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 07:30 am:

Martha K., I think you're on to something:

By T. Hagbloom, VI on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 02:44 pm:

Big building in background looks like very important target. Person looks very suspicious to me, think I am going to call Homeland Security :-)

By WALTER P TAMPA on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 05:56 pm:

By walter p tampa on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 06:06 pm:

always like the deer picture eh

By Deep in Houghton on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 10:22 pm:

I'm pretty sure that is Russ Hanson of Hancock, an avid birdwatcher, looking for recent arrivals at the mouth of the Pilgrim River. Believe it or not, pelicans are often seen here each spring. This photo sure did give a lot of you a chance to excercise your imagination.

By Yooperlobo, Albuquerque, N.M. on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 11:39 pm:

I vote for a periscope on a yooper sub.
