Robert Torreano's great grandfather, Charles Pignocco, is somewhere among the mine crew above in this classic shoebox memory. Lot's of young faces in this group, apparently photographed after a light dusting of snow.

Closeup
We've had more than a 'light dusting' the past couple of days here in Calumet. The second photo above was taken yesterday morning, after a couple feet of new snow had been dumped on Still Waters, the assisted living home from whence this daily feature originates. Many of our residents are children of miners themselves.

Buried somewhere in those snowbanks is the new resident van, which we were able to pick up last week. But it's not yet in service, waiting for the paperwork to clear. For Pasty Cam newcomers we should mention: this purchase was made possible through the generous support of visitors to this website. On behalf of the residents, staff and volunteers at Still Waters, our sincere thanks.

Oh, by the way, Toivo has Sunday off, a day of rest somewhere out in California, several days into his 50-state tour. Stay tuned in the weeks ahead for this unique look at the U.S. through the eyes of a yooper.

Robert,
Do you know which mine, shaft, and the approx. date? Some of us might also have relatives in the photo. Thanks for sharing,
PHM

Carbide lamps on the miner's helmets help would start to define the time period.

I enjoyed the pics. I have one of those miner's pic in my collection with my dad in it. Those men worked hard to take care of their families.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm still hoping someone will submit the article about Taka from the Daily Mining Gazette. Many of us would like to read it and its not on their website. Enjoy your beautiful, clean snow!

By cak on Sunday, March 30, 2003 - 02:09 pm:

I agree with Marsha, would like to read the article on Taka.

Robert
Are you related to Frank Torreano..the great tenor that sang many solos in the Catholic church choir in Calumet (or maybe Laurium) often on the Radio. Frank also sang with the CopperCountry Mens Choral Club in the 1940's. Frank worked in the Car shops for C & H in Calumet. In the choral Club was another great tenor from Houghton, Fred Carhart, who sang in the Episcopal Church choir and worked in the car(railroad) shops at Copper Range.

Taka @ MTU on Sunday, March 30, 2003 - 06:03 pm:

ok. since I am on Gazette, it's time to stop having fun watching you people confusing about my gender :) If you think the person above is not beautiful, then I am probably a guy. Let me check (checking, checking..). mm, yes I am indeed a guy. I just checked :)
I was actually on cam notes several times in the past (eg, Dec 29th 02, http://www.pasty.com/discuss/messages/994/1764.html)

I would really love to stay in USA and keep providing photos. However, it is almost impossible for international students to find a job in USA now. So most likely, I have to go back to Japan at least for the next few years. I am hoping to find a job in USA and come back as soon as possible.

By Donn de Yampert, Houghton, MI. on Sunday, March 30, 2003 - 06:42 pm:

Trust me, I knew you were male from the beginning. I never questioned gender and most only admired your photography achievement. I am pleased that I get to take pictures and have mine placed with yours. As an electrical engineer from Tech...you will have the world by the tail and work anywhere you want with both English and Japanese language backgrounds.
Regards,
Donn

Thanks for posting the article! Taka, I really admire your photography--keep the great photos coming from wherever you end up! Congratulations on your upcoming graduation.

For those just joining the banter between Taka and Rose, she has been known to be a subject of Taka's snapshots from time to time. It's safe to assume she already knew Taka was a 'he'.

The photo of the mine crew was taken in the early 1920's pre-1924. I will find out which mine it was and let you know.

By JoAnn on Saturday, April 5, 2003 - 12:40 pm:

The miner front row, fourth from left I believe is my uncle, Peter Beljan. The mine would likely be the Isle Royale shaft #4 or #5.

I have a similar photo, a post card actually of a group of miners from a mine near Iron Mountain. In it are my grandfather and his father. It appears to be taken around 1920. Perhaps I could send a scan of it for posting. I wonder how many of these photos are around?

By Reg Bennett on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 - 05:31 am:

It was very good to see the pictures of the miners. I was wondering how many come from Cornwall, or better still Camborne. Many Conish miners worked all over the world and I am sure some in the picture came from here. We visit your web site regularly and are amased at the amount of snow you have in the winter. Many thanks for a very interesting site.

Regards to all
