I received this old Keweenaw card from a friend in Sweden, on Christmas day. Really got a kick out of the verse (below). Sture Torikka is married to a Holster girl from Finland. They live in Sweden, close to the Swede/Finland border. His wife, Ulla, and I have the same great-grandfather, Isaak Holster who emigrated to the USA and lived in Paavola. Seems amazing that he would have an old, old picture card of Keweenaw and send it back to me here in da UP. Holy Wah! As Carl Pellonpaa would say. :o)

When it's Christmas time in Michigan's U.P.,
And the gentle breezes blow,
About seventy miles an hour
And it's fifty-two below.

You can tell you're in DA UP
'cause the snow's up to your butt,
And you take a breath of Christmas air
And your nose holes both freeze shut.

The weather here is wonderful,
So I guess I'll hang around,
I could NEVER leave DA U.P,
My feet are frozen to the ground!

Welcome to another week of the Pasty Cam! Each Sunday morning I look forward to our "Shoebox Memory", and would encourage you to dig out any old photos relating to life in the northwoods, to share with our cyberspace U.P. visitors.

Sunday also brings a new WOW (Wallpaper of the Week) which is REALLY hard to pick this morning. There were so many good, high resolution shots last week. Donn de Yampert's shoreline and Z-Man's Presque Isle cliffs are hard to resist. But I'm leaning toward the Hungarian Falls scene by Taka Aoki, who would have brought it back for us if possible.

A mighty big icicle

With the flat foreground and the cliffs in the background it almost looks like Clifton and the Cliff Mine.

By RD, Iowa on Sunday, December 29, 2002 - 08:33 am:

I love the WOW. The base of the falls looks like a huge cauliflower.

Dooes anyone know if WMPL and Mix93 radio are available on the web? Would appreciate any help. Sorry, don't mean to invade this site........but I didn't know where else to ask. Thanks.

Congratulations to Taka Aoki you did a fine job. Hope your car will make all the future treks with you.

Hey D.C.,
I don't think either are available, yet. At least not last time I checked. I also don't think your invading this site. It's the best place to get pic's of home as well as news and information. I once asked for the phone number of the florist in Houghton so I could send my wife some roses while I was away at sea and I must have gotten 15 emails in less than an hour, as well as several replies in here:) Great place visited by the most wonderful people in the world(Us Yoopers).
If you ever find that either station becomes available online, leave a post in here!!

As long as I'm asking favors......how about this one. I have a place in Eagle River that I use only in the warm(relatively) months. How about some pictures from the lake shore around the Inn , river, Courthouse etc. I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I don't know if WMPL is online but I know there's a website for all the Michigan newpapers-- which helps me stay abreast of life in the real world.

By Lowell Mo on Monday, December 30, 2002 - 06:03 pm:

I also have the web site with all the newspapers in Michigan and it also has the radio stations that have a web site. So maybe you can find out that way by checking the stations.

By Lowell Mo on Monday, December 30, 2002 - 06:26 pm:

Ogden Newspapers own 4 of the major papers in the U.P. and they have a web site for them.
