Bob Gilreath and his wife Liz were out exploring once again, this time they checked out the Adventure Mine, near Greenland, along with the colors that were in the leaves that day.

While on the mining grounds, they took the hike through the woods to see the old Powder House, which is marked by the rock and mortar work in the remaining walls standing. There are other foundations on the grounds, marking where the copper mining operation took place back in the days it was in full swing.

The color around the Adventure Mine grounds went from muted and barely there, to vivid and standing out by itself. The history of Copper Mining in Ontonagon County is well preserved by this site and during their open hours, they offer guided tours underground to this mine, considered to be one of the best preserved copper mines in Michigan. Seeing the fall hues surrounding all that history this time of year is an added bonus for those that make the journey!

You had an early start today Mary

Great pictures. Just wish I could be there to see the Fall colours instead of sitting out the rain in Cornwall !!

What a place of interest both now and back in it's hey-days! Autumn color never a disappointment!

The Adventure Mine has quite the colourful history associated to it. The Adventure Mining Co. organized in 1850. In 1858 it purchased the Merchants Co. property. In 1870 the company was sold and reorganized under the same name. In 1898, the company was sold again and reorganized under the Adventure Consolidated Copper Co. This consolidation included the Adventure, Hilton, and Knowlton mines. The company suspended all operation in October of 1917. The mine produced approx. 11 million lbs. of refined copper. Unfortunately, I'm at work and have to go out into the field shortly, but if I get back at a decent time today, I'll post additional info.

Great stone work in those walls back in the day, with stones of all shapes. If they had a tile roof it might still be a useable building.
