Good morning everyone!

We're enjoying all the coverage of the 150th
anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg. Maybe one
of the Shoeboxes this month could be about Civil War
veterans form the CC? Or veterans who settled in
the CC.
First Post
Good idea. Maybe we could do a follow up to yesterday's Day in History about the Iron Brigade

Good morning

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 07:57 am:

Good morning! Great slideshow again today. I especially loved the covered road, the Copper Country sign and the bikes on Mackinac Island.

Have a great day, everybody!

Good morning, everyone.
Jbuck, I'm still 'fighting' the 'War Between the States' (aka Civil War).;>

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 08:30 am:

That's an interesting angle, Shirley. Wonder how many Conferderates from the War of the Rebellion settled in the CC?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 08:37 am:

Interesting question, jbuck, maybe someone can answer that for us.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 08:58 am:

General John Bell Hood, noted for Ft. Hood and Mt. Hood is my maternal grandmother, Janie Beatrice Hood Stovall's great Uncle.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 09:28 am:

I've always admired General Hood, Janie. He unfortunately lost an arm in the Battle at Gettysburg. A great man, and a 'fellow Kentuckian'.:)

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 09:40 am:

Grandma told me he lost the use of his left arm and his right leg was amputated. But he still had 11 or 12 kids. Amazing as a 10 year old kid when Grandma told me about him it was pretty interesting and at the same time in school we were learning about the Civil War.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 12:06 pm:

You're right, Janie ~ I forgot about him losing his leg....that was at the Battle of Chickamauga (TN & GA border), right? Wonder if your Grandma knew how he got his nickname "Sam"?
Sorry for being 'off-subject', Charlie, but like jbuck posted ~ it is the anniversary of an important period in the history of our country.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 12:19 pm:

She probably did. Gen. Hood died in 1879, Grandma was born in 1888 and died in 1988. So everything she knew about him came from family remembrances.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 06:24 pm:

One of the saddest parts of General Hood's life was
that he, his wife, and oldest child all died very
close together. There were 10 orphans left behind.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 07:04 pm:

Yes, that was sad ~ an epidemic, if my memory serves me correctly. I've read so many books on the "Civil War" that I often get confused on facts. You should see my bookcases!;>

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 07:17 pm:

It was a fever of some sort.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 08:25 pm:

Very interesting discussion today. I always like learning about history. Thank you very much for sharing.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 08:46 pm:

Grandma had probably so much history about her uncle Gen. Hood that would have been so interesting to learn. I wish I could have the time back to talk to her about more. She lived in Anniston Alabama and visits were pretty far apart. Hind sight is always 20/20.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 - 11:50 pm:

Second Dr Nat, very interesting discussion, thanks for sharing!
