Sorry for the delay on this week's Shoebox Memory. With all the work we have in high places around the Keweenaw this weekend, there's hardly time to send you these pictures. The video at the bottom was recorded late yesterday afternoon.

I would love to do more scenes from the places we work as we maintain Pasty.NET's wireless broadband all around the peninsula. From the top of the tower at Sunset Bay to the clock tower at Calumet Theatre - the old radar domes at Mt. Horace Greeley to the attic of Mariner North - the top of Brockway to the water towers on Swedetown Hill - it has been a unique was to experience the Copper Country for over 10 years now. It would be easier to take you along, if we could only get a unit of Google Glass. One of these days...

Special thanks to Mark Dennis who provided the old photos taken during constriction of Hoist House #2 around 1918 - 1920. And thanks the Bill Haller for expediting those pictures. Both men have devoted a great deal of time in helping to preserve this icon of the Copper Boom years, along with all of the other board members of the Quincy association.

Have a good week :o)

Thanks, Charlie, for the great visual tour of the Quincy shaft house. I've wondered since my days at Tech in the 50's what the inside of that building might look like. Great show, and thanks for all the other things you do in educating us and bringing us the technology to communicate with the world.

Great video! I was in there many years ago when Quincy still owned it. Louis Koeppel allowed my brother and I up there. His office was down on M-26 in Ripley at the Smelter site.

Always enjoy the "then" and "now" type pictures!
And the video makes it all the more interesting!
Thanks Charlie!

Notice in the first photo how the pulley supports all lead to Hoist House #1, and in the second picture they are aimed at the newer HH #2.

While this post will most likely get lost in the Bermuda trial of posting (ie no one will see it) I'm posting anyway :). I had the privilege of going up to that very spot with Jonathan for the very reason Charlie was up there a few years back. The only difference was we didn't go out on that catwalk as it was about 2am. It's dangerous enough up there as it is. However, the view at night is pretty cool as well. That said, not nearly as great as it is be during the day. Thanks Charlie for getting the one view I wasn't able to get!

Thanks to all for the feedback. Yes, Paul, that catwalk is a place where few people go, even if they climb the 178 steps to the top. The thing that always makes me nervous taking pictures or video from such a place, is the fear that I'll drop the camera (my phone). If you happen to know of anyone who would let us use their Google Glass, I could spend a couple weeks just visiting such vantage points, and bring back a ton of lofty footage.
