Bob Williams was UP North here visiting recently and made a quick stop on the Eagle Harbor Cut-Off Road, to climb the old fire tower that is located in the Copper Falls Park. That's a favorite stop of mine, too. It's always been a fun time to climb the stairs of that tower and take in the view, as Bob did here in today's photos. Whether you're looking down at the park or out at the vastness of Lake Superior from that vantage point, it's really amazing to be up there on top of the Keweenaw.

No way I could climb that tower, even when younger because of my fear of heights!:<
Hope that fire tower won't be needed UP there this year!
Thanks for the neat views, Bob!

"GOOD MORNING", Can any one go to the fire tower ?
What is wrong with the "whats-up', It is stuck on
yesterday's pictures.

By Sconie (Sconie) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 09:58 am:

Actually, it is not an old "fire tower," but rather, the former USCG "look out" or "watch" tower that was located at the Eagle Harbor Coast Guard Station. The tower was moved to it's current location in 1961 by the Keweenaw County Road Commission. Regards, Paul LaVanway

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 01:13 pm:

Been a while since i was up in that tower, but
always enjoy the view. Thanks for the great
pictures! AND the history lesson about the origin
of the tower.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 03:08 pm:

Nice blind! (UC?)

By Richard Staszewski (Wisyooper) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 03:58 pm:

Can you imagine being there for a couple of days if it was a
fire tower? Of course it would be a lot higher if it was used as
a fire tower! How about working there as a spotter during a
thunder storm? What a ride!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 04:21 pm:

I'm not sure Ranger Gord would approve of this being used a fire tower....

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 04:52 pm:

"I can see for miles and miles and miles"

By Bob Williams (Wabbit) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 05:22 pm:

Many times I have gone up the tower to have a pasty and a
beer.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 05:38 pm:

Oh my, Janie, looking at your current profile pic, I would say you can see 'water for miles and miles and miles'! That's terrible!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 05:58 pm:

Shirley, yes it's a reminder of just who is in charge...

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 07:52 pm:

Shirlohio,
When Mimi and I stopped there a few years ago Mimi wouldn't climb it either. I took a few pics of her walking around on the ground. :o) It sure is a pretty spot. Didn't know where it came from so today has been a learning experience. Would make a humdinger of a blind, 'eh?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 - 08:17 pm:

And if Ranger Gord had been in this blind he
wouldn't have been so lonely.....

By Mel, MN (Mehollop) on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 - 08:47 am:

Either the tower has been shortened, or it's a reminder of the way things used to be... the whole point of a fire tower is to be able to see over the trees surrounding it so that you can spot smoke. Lots of trees taller than the tower means the spotter couldn't spot from there.

Mary says: My mistake, Mel, it wasn't a fire tower at all, it was a U.S. Coast Guard "watch tower" or "look out", that had been located at the Eagle Harbor Coast Guard Station, but was moved to this park in the 60's. Thanks to Paul (Sconie) for pointing that out, further up in the notes. :-)
