This past weekend, Chad Johnson made a winter drive to check out Calumet Waterworks Park, also known as "Bucky's". Beautiful sunshine was there to brighten the chilly day, but there was no beach in sight, just snow and built up ice. Out beyond that, the blue waters of Lake Superior were at rest. No wild wind and waves that day, but you can tell by the waves of snow, drifted and forming mounds of ice that there have been some dandy winds out there whipping the Big Lake into a splashing fury.

It's hard to believe that the first day of Spring is just two weeks away. Unless we get a number of unseasonably warm days in that time, it won't be seeming like Spring around the Keweenaw for a while yet.

An early good morning to everyone! Shirley, how did you fare with the snowstorm?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 - 08:03 am:

Beautiful!!! I didn't know that the Calumet Waterworks were known as Bucky's. I learned something already this morning!

Nice...the days are beginning to brighten UP!

Why "Bucky's"?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 - 08:19 am:

What a difference from when Dr. Nat and I were there a month ago. Back then, there were hundreds of bergy bits and growlers floating around the open water, that is until the storm came and blew them away.

Calumet Waterworks has also been known as Bucky's ever since I can remember, and surely long before that. I was always told it was because there used to be a fellow out there who ran an ice-cream/snack stand that was nicknamed Bucky, so the park became known as Bucky's after that. I have to sometimes stop myself when telling folks about Waterworks so as not to call it Bucky's as I know they wouldn't have a clue what I am talking about.....

I was a student at MTU from 84-89 and never heard it called anything other than Calumet Waterworks. Limited perspective of a student? Had several great parties out there, whatever it's called.

Pretty pictures, but I'm tired of snow! Dunerat, we got hammered....trees are heavily flocked. Mary, I hope you're right about Spring coming soon.:) No fun being snowed in with a 13yr. old cat.:<

I love the "cool" pics today--especially the awesome colors and shadows in the last one.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 - 02:18 pm:

Dale: '84-'89 was long after Bucky's closed, he was in operation back in the '60s and maybe into the very early '70's.

Beautiful.

We took a drive out to Eagle River a week ago, and witnessed the same beautiful scene that Chad took of the Superior Shoreline at Calumet Waterworks Park. It was spectacular and the mountains of frozen ice outstretched for miles and then the open blue water in the distance. Everybody should make a trip to see Lake Superior in the wintertime. It reminds me of this poem my children learned in school: "Snow makes whiteness where it falls, the bushes look like popcorn balls, and places where I use to play look like somewhere else today."

These pictures remind me of a song I learned in Kindergarden many
moons ago:

"There's snow on everything I see
On every bush, On every tree
It's such a very lovely sight,
Like birthday cake, with frosting white."

What am I doing thinking about snow while on vacation on the Gulf
Shore of Alabama??

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 - 09:20 pm:

You picked a great place to vacation, Kosk! Went there many times and winter was the best.:)
