If you're looking for snow, then the Keweenaw is the place to be. We literally went from bare ground and grass, to piles of snow in a matter of a week. Even though I've lived here my entire life, it still amazes me that it can happen in just days.

To give you a few examples of the snowy situation here, Barb Bouwkamp braved the cold and wind a few days ago to snap us some shots. She suggested we play a little game with her photos, similar to the "Where's Waldo" books, where you have to find Waldo in the crowd of people. Our goal, will be to find objects that are buried by the snowfall. Ready to start? Here we go....

Photo #1 - Find the two cars
Photo #2 - Find the person
Photo #3 - Find the grill (barbecue)
Photo #4 - Find the birdbath
Photo #5 - Find the front yard

I forgot to say, no prizes, just the enjoyment of looking at the photos and seeing what it's like to be "buried" in snow. Thanks, Barb, for freezing your fingers and sharing your shots!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 08:35 am:

She got good shots of the snow piled up on everything. A scavenger hunt today, I found them but it took work. I'm with Capt. Finding the yard is questionable. Did anyone elses' scoop frost up so bad you had to kick it really hard to get the snow out?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 08:38 am:

WOW! We've got some coming for the lower Ohio area today, but hopefully NOT that much!:<

By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 09:56 am:

Thank you, Barb, for letting me pipedream of retiring UP there. I can't wait to win the Lottery and move to CH! (I need to win the Lottery to enable me to hire someone to do da snow, eh?) 'Course, seeing these pics of Laurium, maybe I'll look around there, too! Batten down the hatches and man the pumps, everybody! She's fixin' to blow a good one today.

I set the date on the camera and taking pictures of a snow over-hang, if you will, from the kitchen window. It is covering half the window right now. Then I am going to send some pictures to friends where we use to live downstste.;O) They will get a kick out of seeing it. I just have to wait and see how long it will take to fall off as I take pictures of it.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 10:14 am:

When I first started taking the pictures, it was about 4 inches and now it covers half the window.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 10:56 am:

Hi
I'm in SE Michigan, where we are having light snow, currently, with predicted accumulation of a couple of inches. If anybody here at work whines, I'll send them to these pictures.

It's suposed to get up to the mid 40's here on Monday, in passing producing a mix of snow & sleet on Sunday. Anybody in earshot will hear me whine about that. I wanna ski, dash it!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 12:45 pm:

Hi you all. My son is working an 8-month coop job between Toledo and Sandusky, OH until August. He's really missing the snow and MTU this semester, even though he loves his job. AccuWeather is making noises about southern Ohio's getting some ice this weekend. I hope your power stays on, Shirley! We had a couple of inches of snow on the ground here in Midland, and we are adding a couple more inches here today, but it is certainly nothing at all like Copper Country. Lots of snow is nice to look at, but hard work to clean up. :-)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 12:56 pm:

OUCH! Marianne, I sure hope AccuWeather is wrong! We've had snow this morning but it has slacked off right now. Snow I can handle...ice, NOT!:(

By Betty Lou Kaiponen (Bettylou) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 01:10 pm:

why would the photo of the Bridge Cam on our Computer be all disfigured? Does anyone know??

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 01:53 pm:

Pasty's Bridge Cam appears "disfigured", ie pixelated, too, on my computer. You can see Michigan Tech's Bridge Cam below, though:

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 02:25 pm:

It's snowing in northern lower Michigan, 2.

By Phyllis Bergh (Brinkleysmom) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 04:23 pm:

I think everyone who lives in Laurium should automatically be given snowmobiles!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 05:07 pm:

Laurium, isn't that where the 'glacier' forms?

By Barbara Bouwkamp (Barbarab) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 06:50 pm:

Yes, Shirley, Laurium's massive "snow glacier"
formed by Laurium's famous Glacier Control with the winter warriors on the snow plow brigade every morning starting at 5 AM is still growing.
Check out Pasty.cam May 5, 2002; and check out Jim Junttila's column on Woods Water and Worse, Feb. 18, 2011 on the Laurium Glacier. Last year I had some photos featuring the Glacier Control but I don't remember when that was. Those guys better come down our street soon, it is narrowing quite a bit. The snow wars have started, pitting neighbor against neighbor as to where to put the stuff.
We did not realize that the art and science of snow plowing was just that. We tried to bribe the glacier control to plow the opposite side of the street first, then come down our side last...but they said they had done this for 100 years this way, and that is how it was. We bought our house on the wrong side of the street.
We get 3 foot snow plow drifts and the other side gets six inches. Not fair.

By Sally/Hocking (Twinb) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 07:58 pm:

The Hubby & I were just watching "Unwrapped" on the Food
Channel and Sayklly's was featured....yum...got a sugar high
watching it!! I knew who they were thanks to pasty.com!
Enjoy all that snow folks. Was in the mid 50s here today and
supposed to get warmer. But there is plenty of winter to go so I
am expecting more. Left the UP the year of the 'BIG' winter of
'78-'79...I really miss those exciting winters!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, January 25, 2013 - 08:28 pm:

Thanks, Barbara. Yeah, I know all about battles with snowplows, having lived 30 miles north of Bismarck, ND. Every time we'd clean 3ft of snow out of our driveway, they'd come down the road pushing 3 - 4 feet of more snow, which was usually packed ice by the time they reached us.:(

By William M. Jacka Sr. (Bama) on Saturday, January 26, 2013 - 08:42 am:

The firsr pic is of the former Harry King home o across fron the Daniels Park on the corner of Third and Pewabic.
The second appears to been taken in the 300 block on Tamarack Street with the Thielman home on the right and The Laurium Manor next door as its not in the picture. I grew up across the street in the 30's thru the 50's.
And the fith pic is looking down 4th street from Hecla with the Carlton home on the right and across on Kearsarge St. is the Paul home.
All references to the homes are to the owners back in my era.
