Hockey season has returned to the Copper Country, with Pasty.NET streaming high school and college games once again. Yesterday when Edie and I were in Mohawk for a spaghetti dinner fundraiser, I was reminded of the "Glacia Dome" that once stood near the school, a facility that operated from about 1908 to 1932. It's name was derived from the first artificial ice rink, the Glaciarium, which advertised:

"The area of artificial ice is extremely convenient for such as may be desirous of engaging in the graceful and manly pastime of skating"
In addition to the ice rink, upstairs was a bowling alley. Last week when the old token (above) from the Glaciadom appeared on eBay, it didn't mention whether it was used to exchange for skates or bowling shoes (or maybe both).

There aren't many pictures of the Glaciadom floating around, except for a few over at Connie Julien's excellent Copper Country Hockey website, along with a thumbnail sketch of the rink's short history.

On a related topic, I wanted to pass along preliminary results of that fundraiser at Mohawk School yesterday. As you may have read, it was organized by the friends of Mike Sprenger, to help him during this challenging time. There was a huge turnout for the dinner, as well as the bake sale and silent auction. The last report we received, the effort had brought in around $ 11,000 to help with medical expenses.

Sheriff Ron and other performers provided the dinner music

It was a wonderful meal, and a fun time was had by all at the fundraiser. We send along prayers and best wishes for Mike's full recovery.

Have a good week :o)

I remember hearing somewhere that the Glaciadom was moved to Marquette.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, December 9, 2012 - 09:01 am:

Back in the Pasty Cam archives there is a comment from Bill Penprase about the rink being moved. There was a rink moved, but - according to several sources - not the Glaciadom, which was dismantled and used for scrap lumber. The rink that ended up in Marquette was the Laurium Palestra. Historic pics. Interesting how even tokens can tell a history story.

Sheriff Ron...good man!

I like the description about the first photo..."manly pastime". Anything to say about that, ladies? :-)

...and a shout-out to Mike Sprenger, keep up the fight.

I ditto what Janie said. Fundraisers around here are always very successful also. It's wonderful to see the caring we all have for each other.

Prayers to Mike. The dinner was great, that spaghetti and meat sauce was oh sooooooooooo good. The people who did all that work getting it going, keeping it going, and to finish it up, are some really dear and wonderful people.

I lived across the street from the ice rink in Fulton from 1964-1966. Just a grade school kid at the time. We used to help the guys that ran the rink scrape the snow off so they could flood. Had an oil heater in the shack and sold candy. Same as the Ahmeek and Copper City rinks they had a big speaker outside and they played records while we skated. Good times.

Mike Sprenger added to my prayer list. Hang in there, Mike!

Posted this on the wrong page:

Thanks Charlie, for the 'bulletin board' on the fund raiser for Mike Sprenger. We are so blessed to have good health coverage, we'd like to help out too. Could you post a street address where a donation could be sent? Maybe one of the Superior National Bank branches? Or Gitchee Gumee Bible Camp itself?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Sunday, December 9, 2012 - 05:21 pm:

Hey Alex....... since they said 'graceful' AND 'manly' in the caption i wondered if back then any skating other than hockey was viewed as more for the ladies. The picture shows more ladies than men, so maybe they were trying to 'sell' skating to the men?

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Monday, December 10, 2012 - 06:21 am:

For those who asked, you could send any donations to:

Gitche Gumee
5189 Garden City Rd
Eagle River, MI 49950

Be sure to note that it is for the Mike Sprenger project.
