Mike Schneider was in Presque Isle Park in Marquette recently, when he heard something rustling in the garbage can. He situated himself nearby the garbage can and waited. Before you know it, out pops this small raccoon. Later he spotted this trio of masked critters, as they hurriedly climbed the tree, to get away from these humans watching them. While these three baby raccoons were busy hiding in a tree, their mother was scurrying off.

What fun photos, even if these guys are more of a nuisance than anything, you have to admit, they're still cute little creatures.

How cute. They really think they are getting away. LOL..

1st photo caption: "Nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t wanna live here."

or "You know what they're made of, Chet?" :-O

Nice pix...very gangsta.

Those rascally raccoons are just so darn cute!!

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Thursday, July 5, 2012 - 08:54 am:

We were at a state park in Louisiana two years ago and saw almost a dozen raccoons at one time. Turns out a Mr. O'Brien fed them from the back of his pickup at 3 p.m. each day and they were ready!

When I was a youngster I held one of those critters....it was tame of course, and it put it's arms around my neck in a hug. Now they definitely have become a nuisance to me..tearing the top off my garbage can even though it's tied down with a bungee cord. :( But yeah, they're cute.

By Donna (Donna) on Thursday, July 5, 2012 - 09:05 am:

yes..they are adorable..but vicious and destructive.

Great pictures!!

Got the hiccups this morning, eh, Donna!;) Just kidding...don't you hate when that happens.

Nothing cuter than a baby racoon but they can be mischievous. Years ago, we put 2 little koi fish in our small garden pond here in Colorado. My daughters named the fish Pooh and Tigger. Well, you can guess what happened. All we ever saw for evidence was those distinctive wet footprints leading away from the pond.....

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Thursday, July 5, 2012 - 09:52 am:

LOL, Alex!

Those little masked bandits are definitely up there on the cuteness meter -- a nuisance from our perspective, to be sure, but very cute. Just think how they've adapted to living around people. When other animals' habitat is encroached upon by ours and they're compressed into smaller and smaller spaces between us, these little guys have it all figured out. Of course, having them literally living in our backyards also makes them potentially dangerous to us and our domesticated animals (bites, disease). Best to watch them from a distance and avoid feeding them when possible. Still, they are charming. I like how they wash their food with their little hands.

Sorry to hear about your koi, Nancyd! Those darn raccoons! I bet your daughters were upset.

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Thursday, July 5, 2012 - 10:17 am:

Neat pics, Mike. We live in W. Hancock and caught
7 in our backyard, at different times, with a large
cage. Brought them miles away into the woods.
They were ravaging the neighborhood, literally.
This was several years ago, have had non lately.

Cute little devils, and I do mean devils! We had one in our cottage a couple winters ago. When we arrived in June the place was a huge mess! I can't believe I didn't take pics, but we were too overwhelmed. Fortunately we always close all bedroom and bathroom doors when we leave. In the kitchen, dining room and living room areas there was not one spot you could step without stepping on the stuff he had strewn all over. Every paper was shredded, every kitchen implement and game piece was chewed into bits! The thousands of buttons I had in decorative baskets were all chewed up! At first we thought maybe a human had did it, but then we saw the bloody footprints on the large mirror in the living room and the door frames. Turns out he was going in and out around a pipe under the sink. The neighbor (not knowing the raccoon was going in our cottage) shot him out of a tree, hence the bloody footprints. I think of this everytime we go in now in June!

Thanks for all the kind comments, cute and destructive critters they are.

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Friday, July 6, 2012 - 10:00 am:

My hubby was a animal control officer and use to
get raccoons out of chimney's. He adopted the runt
of the litter and we raised him, called him Pookie.
He had his own swimming pool, a huge old oak tree
limb he loved to sleep on and his own "Pook House"
(aka dog house)..... we eventually gave him to a
friend in Alpena who lived on a farm when we moved
to our new house. He lived to the ripe old age of
12.

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Friday, July 6, 2012 - 11:13 am:

LOLOLOL is right! The inbread cat picture, especially with the caption, is hilarious!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, July 6, 2012 - 11:34 am:

I'll bet next time he'll start eating from the sides, not the middle. :)
Sdcferndale, that's a nice story about Pookie!
