Today's Shoebox Memory has several direct connections with the Pasty Cam. Our story begins near Brighton, England, where Phyllis and Dorothy (top photo) were daughters of Arthur and Annie Kettley. Arthur has appeared on these pages before:

Last month the Pasty Cam featured stories of folks crossing the Atlantic on the Titanic. This is a story about a family that didn't take that voyage. According to Phyllis (who was 5 years old at the time), she had an untimely case of Chicken Pox (or timely, however you look at it). The family ended up finding other passage across to North America, where Arthur had been reassigned to Canada.

Phyllis eventually emigrated to the U.S., where she married Frank Covert. (Side note: Grandma and Grandpa Covert loved to explore Northern Michigan, and had a few adventures to tell.) The Coverts had two daughters, who also appeared in a previous Shoebox Memory:

Thelma is the one on the left, and also in the third Big Picture above. She married Jerry Cobb, and became a Mom herself, with the birth of her first child - a daughter - in 1953. This happens to be my wife Edie, who researches our facts on Pasty Central Day in History. Edie first appeared on the Pasty Cam with our son Jonathan, in front of the Keweenaw Mountain lodge, back in '99:
1999

...and, as you may know, Jonathan was the original Pasty Camist in 1998, providing almost all of the pictures for the first few years. Who knows if there would have ever been a Pasty Cam if little Phylis hadn't had Chicken Pox back in 1912?

A final note: As our story began in Brighton, England, it concludes in Brighton, Michigan, where we celebrated Grandma Cobb's 80th birthday this Spring. Here's her whole family on the front porch of the Brighton Cracker Barrel:

Happy Mother's Day to Mom's everywhere!

Have a good week :o)

Proverbs 31:
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”

Happy Mothers Day!

By Morning Glory (Lucylu) on Sunday, May 13, 2012 - 08:42 am:

I love that scripture thank you Alex. My mother was a blessing and she was noble. She is not here today she went on to her mansion in heaven in April 2010. She was a Hancock girl and she married my dad a Houghton boy. (I feel like I go home when I get to visit the UP). The best thing about this mother's day is I know, that I know, that I know, that I will see her again when I get to heaven because we both made the choice to accept Jesus as our Savior. I am so thankful today for my Mom and the hope that is in Salvation.

Happy Mother's Day, ladies!
Alex, thank you for that passage....the minister read Proverbs 31 at my mama's funeral, and she was very deserving of it. A wonderful mama who never shirked her duty to her family. She went 'home' on June 6, 1989. We miss you, Mama!

Even though my mom is gone, I am going to make one of her favorite meals today. It is ring baloney, sour kraut, baked beans AND mashed potatos. She would have two helpings, and it always surprised me because she was never a big eater but, she loved it.

Happy Moms Day to all moms.

Interesting family history, Charlie, thank you. Somehow I suspected the sixth photo down was your wife, Edie, even before you told us.:) Hope you both have a wonderful celebration today!

UPDATE

There was a P.S. on today's Shoebox Memory that I forgot to include... Wishing a Happy Mother's Day to the 4th member of our family who was part of the team that began Pasty Central years ago. Known as the "Pasty Girl" (a voice you may have heard if you ordered by phone back in the day) our daughter Becky now has two daughters of her own. Becky maintains a nice website of family activites, and yesterday they visited the Zoo near where they currently live out West. Grandma and Grandpa are looking forward to a U.P. visit with the girls this summer. :o)
