There are so many good spots to gaze upon the splendor that is spread before you along the shores of Gitche Gumee. With that said, I have to admit that I haven't a clue as to where Greta Jones is standing for this breathtaking view. It gives off many different vibes… those of feeling cold with the icy waters, but yet warm with the sun highlighting the mountains of ice piled up along the waterfront. Calm with the still waters, yet stormy with the fluffy, gray clouds hanging just above the waterline. An appropriate example of Lake Superior's variety of moods just waiting to appear.

Though it is still near freezing this morning in the Copper Country, we are told that the Siberia express will arrive later today, with 30 to 40 below zero windchills. Bundle up! By the way, see a special note from our webmaster in today's What'sUP column.

Great picture of the "Big Lake" and it's mood.

By Mary, NWOh on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 06:16 am:

What a wonderful picture! I could stare at it for hours and dream. I can't use it as a desktop though I'd like to because that's my granddaughter's place. Its 57° outside Toledo this morning and our snow is all gone. Supposed to be 17° tonight, what a change. Have a good day, all.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 06:34 am:

Magnificent picture! Would love to be there. Raining here in the Saginaw Valley at 50 degrees. Winter arrives again this afternoon.

By Raven/Downstate on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 08:51 am:

A soul easing picture. We're kinda sad here downstate today. 200 car accident just up the street. Sad and sobering. And God's hand over all, only two deaths, as far as is known. Thanks for the photo.

By cm macomb mi on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 08:58 am:

Wow just hit 58 deg D/S... tomorrow is another story.

By Clf.Mi. on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 09:10 am:

Raven/Downstate.
Can you tell us where down state the 200 car accident was?

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 09:14 am:

Great pic, looks like we were both out taking advantage of the 'blue sky day' in the Keweenaw the other day, here are a couple of lighthouse pics for everyone to get a little more homesick over, the blue sky days are few and far between this time of year.... enjoy...

The 200 hundred car pile-up was near Lansing. A 50 car pile-up and several smaller crashes closed 12 miles of I-96 from Okemos to Webberville. The fog was as thick as it could ever get.

By Yooper in MN on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 09:18 am:

Thanks for the great pic! I needed to update my wallpaper on my computer at work.

By Jim in Breckenridge on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 09:36 am:

Warm and rain but by tonight it is going to snow with 1-2 inches of snow. Got to love Mi. I also heard two people died in the 200 car pile up.

By Roudy Mi on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 09:42 am:

Dave....Looks like you just missed Sharons place on the right of the second picture. Right?

By Bob on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 09:45 am:

from the looks of this weater statement we won't
be seeing those beautiful blue skies in the Picture for a bit. ;-)

By Joe P., Lake Medora on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 09:46 am:

I suspect this picture was taken on M-26 north of Eagle Harbor, just a wild guess, winter's effect can fool you though.

By Liz, Idaho on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 10:01 am:

Greta replaces Dave on my screen saver then Dave puts up the lighthouse pictures. Choices Choices. Greta gets it today!

By sur5er, Indiana on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 10:06 am:

Beautiful pics of Lake Superior....am definately homesick. High in the 60's here on the south shores of Lake Michigan, yesterday. Temps dropping down to the single digits this evening and snow in the horizon...bout time we got back to winter.

By Raven/Downstate on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 10:06 am:

The accident was on I-96, between Williamston and Okemos, just east of Lansing. I believe it started with a semi roll-over, and escalated from there. We had a pea-soup-er of rolling fog, a sudden warm snap. Fog literally rolling off the top of the snow, leaving visibility at zero or, if you can believe it, lower.

And my husband encountered an nasty head-on crash on his way home from the Kellog Center at Gull Lake (north of Kalamazoo), due to the same conditions.

By Mary Ann, WY on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 10:08 am:

What a beautiful photo. Also enjoy the photos of the lighthouses. Miss seeing them.

By k2, Fowlerville MI on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 10:24 am:

Lansing State Journal Article regarding yesterday's accident on I-96. There is also information at The Detroit Free Press website.

By Dr. Nat in Nevada on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 11:15 am:

Ahhh, beautiful Lake Superior, a sight I miss seeing. It seemed like every time I would go to the big lake it would be just a little bit different. Sometimes the water was a deep azure blue, other times a stormy grey, sometimes when the sun was setting on a humid night the lake and the sky would take on the pastel colours of a Monet painting. I never got tired of standing on that shore taking in the beauty.

By Bob on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 11:38 am:

If you look closely at the photo I'm sure you can pretty much figure out which day it was taken as well as which shore.

The clouds are streaming from left to right, normally that would indicate lake effect on keweenaw bay taken on the east shore, heading south.

But look at the shadows they extend to the right of snow mounds putting the sun at the left, meaning the west side of the Keweenaw.

Wind was out of the south tuesday and wed with sun here and snow in Duluth.

Put it all together and I agree its on the west side of the keweenaw, probably between eagle harbor and Copper Harbor, taken tuesday or wed. ;-)

Great sho

By David S. - CA on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 11:59 am:

I think those intimidating clouds over Lake Superior are recycled over and over. Gods way of letting us know who's in charge.

By John S, Laurium on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 12:02 pm:

beautiful - Wow!!

By ert, GA on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 12:44 pm:

RE: the accident in the fog. We had very thick fog here on Wed. but the thickest fogs I've ever seen were in the UP.

By Cindy, St. Clair Shores on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 12:45 pm:

I love all of these beautiful pictures, but lighthouses are my number one hobby. Dave, Eagle Harbor Lighthouse is my favorite lighthouse of the more than 100 I've seen in person. I would love to see this one in the wintertime. Thanks for giving me the opportunity even if it's not in person.

By Marc, Painesdale on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 01:05 pm:

Those formations along the shore are the very unique and wonderful "ice volcanoes", found along the western Keweenaw shore. See the site:

http://www.geo.mtu.edu/volcanoes/ice/

for an explantion of this phenomenon and more info on ice, or:

http://www.geo.mtu.edu/volcanoes/ice/images/

to see some great images of these volcanoes in action.

By Uncle Chuck, Little Betsy on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 01:29 pm:

Today's pic looks like sunrise around Brunette park on the south shore, just beautiful! Keep it up Pasty.com You're the BEST!

By Janie, IA. on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 01:54 pm:

Where does the sky begin, and the lake end?

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 01:58 pm:

Two things... First off, if ANYONE can find a more beautiful place on Earth than the U.P., I would sure like to know about it! That picture is so awesome!

Also... I am part of the Crisis Alert Network, and we even got the alert here in Georgia about that horrid wreck near Lansing.

May God Bless all involved.

By Taana on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 02:00 pm:

Beautiful picture Greta! Also, I love the picture of the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. My grandpa ran that lighthouse many years ago when my mom was a kid. So, almost everything in our house has a lighthouse/nautical theme (we also live in view of the South Entry Light). That's why I have a hard time leaving home. ;>)

By ILMHitCC on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 02:31 pm:

Thanks for the beautiful pic. Looks a lot like the North Shore on Tuesday. Took a long drive along M26 that day, the day of Sully Kauppi's memorial service. At first I thought how appropriate the weather was for his service, but then again, any weather was the right weather for Sully. Nobody knew that Lake or the weather like he did! Not even close.
Thanks, Greta. Peace.

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 02:48 pm:

Yes, I also thought a lot about Sully on my drive thru the Keweenaw that day. I first met him many years ago, early 70's, when he was still fishing. He used to bring me a 'care package' once in a while after his trips. Sully was one of a kind, he will be missed.

By Greta Jones,MI on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 02:57 pm:

Thanks to Pastycam for posting my picture, and thanks to everyone for the nice comments. Mary, you are right in being puzzled as to the vantage point of where it was shot. It was taken from the loft window of the log home we're building on the new road in Calumet Lakeshore. I'll be adding more to my gallery soon. Thanks all, again.

By downstate don on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 04:46 pm:

All of the pictures are fantastic...the contrast
between the water and the snow...such a great
view of paradise.

By Paul, Webberville Troll on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 07:19 pm:

Great picture on a Lansing TV news tonight, taken by a camera in a Fowlerville police car responding to the I-96 pileup in the fog yesterday. The police car is traveling 35 miles per hour in the left lane with its heads lights on and you can't see very far ahead. Then a car driven by a lady talking on a cell phone, passes the police car on their right at a speed estimated at 50-55 MPH.Then just as she about disappears into the fog, Boom!, right into the cars that have all ready piled up! Great shot.

By Paul, Webberville Troll on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 07:21 pm:

Ooops! Maybe previous post should have been posted on What'sUP. Sorry.

By Suzy/Icy Cold Minnesota on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 11:11 pm:

Dear Greta,

Thank you so much for the picture. When it's on my background it has so much of the wonderful light that I crave and miss down here in the Twin Cities. I long for that light and the picture will help to bring me there. Thanks!

By Greta Jones, MI on Thursday, January 13, 2005 - 11:16 pm:

Suzy/Icy cold Minnesota, you're very welcome! :)

By BC, AZ on Friday, January 14, 2005 - 02:19 am:

Pray for the wife, baby and the parents of Jason Eldridge who was killed in the pile up due to fog. He is with our Lord, but it is still hard for the family that is left here on earth till they see him again in Heaven. He is absent from the body, but he is present with the Lord.

By Bill G L'anse Mi on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 03:41 am:

Greta, Dave they are both great pictures, Eagle Harbor is one of my favorite lighthouses. Makes me feel better to see pictures like these while I am serving here in the desert with the Michigan Air Guard.

By V. L. .... Oxford Ms. on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 03:44 pm:

These pictures bring back the memories of my mother and father who lived in Lake Linden on Boot Jack Road... I am thrilled to see the UP in these pictures. Thank you so much. Virginia from Oxford, Ms.
