Good Morning all, Afternoon, DJ.!!

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 08:44 am:

Wish me luck folks. Getting ready to leave slushy and snowy Milwaukee for the U.P. Looks to be a messy trip. Wish I had company for driving but will have to talk to the radio.

By elm (Grampy) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 08:57 am:

Greta, you are not alone. Talk to God. It helps:)

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 09:32 am:

Okay fellow Finlanders, please help me how to pronounce Good morning in Finnish.... hyvaa huomenta..... like everyone says how to prounounce sauna-- sow-na, please help me how to pronounce hyvaa huomenta. All my Finnish speaking relatives are deceased so I'm asking for my family for help. I am greeted daily with people saying good morning in Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, German, Italian so I would like to be able to say Good Morning to them in Finnish.

Everyone traveling this Thanksgiving, please have a safe journey as the weather is going to be brutal. Don't eat too much! Hi Fran in GA ! Have a great 2nd Thanksgiving (after celebrating with Alex and family earlier)

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 09:55 am:

Good Morning from cold was 39 when I got up this a.m. Tomorrow is supposed to be cold also.

Hi Sdc, today I will be busy preparing some things ahead for our dinner tomorrow. My niece Barb, hubby Gary and their son Jon will join us for dinner. This will be their first Turkey Day in the south.Their will be 8 of us. Our dinner with Alex and family was nice. Happy Thanksgiving to you and to all Pasty Cammers.

By Alison P (Ricelakealison) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 10:17 am:

I would like to second Sdcferndale's request and add to it: how do you say and pronounce "goodbye"?

I end many of my middle school classes with goodbye in as many languages as possible (someone counted 19 so far!). It would be fun to add Finnish, as it is the language of my husband's family.

Blessed and safe Thanksgiving to you all!

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 10:37 am:

What a beautiful thing to say Good Morning or Good Bye in different languages! Today's children will become international in business and life. Happy family time to all. It's Idaho blue sky and will be a window washing afternoon (50 degrees). Of course, the frost is still on the lawn, the coffee is good, and part of the stuffing is simmering. The pups and cat are wondering what will hit the floor.

" to pronounce Good morning in Finnish.... hyvaa huomenta..."

That's really difficult to do in a text oriented forum such as this, but maybe this will help - if you have QuickTime for the audio: Finnish for foreigners: Tervehtimiset (Greetings)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 11:07 am:

Good morning everyone :) Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving...and a safe trip for those of you who are traveling home.
Gretania, time to adopt a kitty or a doggie for a traveling companion, eh. ;) Besides, they are a whole lot easier to maintain than a man..and they don't criticize your driving, either. ;) Have a safe trip.

Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale),
I'm glad that worked for you.

Here's a link to the Finnish for foreigners home page for a whole bunch of further info.

By lz (Llamamama) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 02:17 pm:

Sur5er, your advice to Gretania, is good except most cats I have had (with the exception of the present one) have not enjoyed car travel. There is some incredibly awful howling associated with car travel. Present cat sits quietly in the passenger seat and occasionally jumps to the dash and looks out. {We are not sure - may have been raised by a pack of house dogs!}....:)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 02:35 pm:

Llamamama (gosh, I love that's one of those names that is fun to say :) Ooops, I forgot about kitties in cars...unless they are trained very young.
My companion dog was car trained, when she was just a few weeks old...and when she had her litter of puppies, my daughter and her friends would take them for car rides, when they were just a couple of weeks old. So when they were adopted out, they were already car trained.
Ok Gretenia, it might be best to scratch the traveling cat idea, that I suggested. Perhaps a traveling dog would be better?

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 02:44 pm:

We don't get white tail like that down here. We had a community mass choir (17 churches) Thanksgiving service last night and it was great. The music was totally American that we did as a mass choir then individual choirs did religious pieces. Wish you all could have been there. Happy Thanksgiving.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 03:43 pm:

Sdcferndale -- Almost without exception the accent is on the first syllable and every letter, including double vowells, is pronounced. (Forget "Si-be'li-us--his name is Swedish--part of the inheritance of 19th c Swedish rule over Finland.)

By Betty Paull Colborn,AZ (Betty) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 06:12 pm:

Congrats Tim - you finally made the 'early bird'...

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 08:00 pm:

Margaret...your community choir sounds wonderful. You must be very thankful esp. this year. So are you continuing to do well? No more chemo? Good for you. Prayers DO help, plus a positive attitude like yours. My cats are leash trained when we're wintering in Texas. People marvel when we take them for Walks. The first one esp. does well as we got her at 2 months and she's used to travel.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 11:31 pm:

Sdc,Ferndale, when the a has two dots over it, the sound is like the a in cat, or hat. ä the links further up there seem pretty good. Didn't try for any audio, though,

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Thursday, November 24, 2005 - 05:15 am:

Thank you FRNash/PHX,AZ: that brought back a lot of Finnish that I had forgotten from my youth. Are you still keeping your eye on UC Berkeley and their Finnish Program?

By Donald (Deege71) on Thursday, November 24, 2005 - 06:52 am:

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. All is well over here in Iraq. We got a little downtime today which was nice. Doesn't happen very often. Hope everyone has a wonderful day. go lions!! Mom, I miss you guys very much and hope to see you soon.
